Not In My Backyard: Suck-Up With Giant Cardboard Signs Terrorizes CarDomain Neighborhood

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

Seriously, what kind of psycho does this? I’ve written about leaving notes on people’s cars, but I’m talking about nice, friendly, one-gearhead-to-another notes intended to express how awesome the other person’s ride is. Anyone who sets out with a Sharpie, a bunch of cardboard, and a head full of self-righteous indignation with the intent of plastering unoffending cars with melodramatic messages to the "Police" deserves to be run over by the next Prius that comes whipping inaudibly around the corner. Last night, I saw that the Firebird I’ve been keeping an eye on got tagged by this rabid busybody (I stole their sign and photographed it before tossing it in the recycle). And today, Eric over in our ad sales department sent me some pics he snapped of this innocent green Escort, a neighborhood regular whose owner I’ve seen plenty of times, that had gotten similarly plastered with hysterical garbage—as well as an abandoned-car sticker. More…

There’s a couple of things I’d like to say to this ridiculous suck-up when I get ahold of them. First of all, how about you don’t touch someone else’s car? Especially with big, filthy pieces of cardboard stuffed under wipers and down into the cowl gap. If you’re a person with anything but the purest of intentions (say, moving the car to save it from fire), keep your hands off other people’s cars. Period! Second, what’s it to you if someone parks on the street? Yeah, so the Tran Am has been there for a month. Is it hurting anyone? Is it leaking, smelling, or making noise? No! It’s not even really depriving residents of parking space. Everyone who lives here lives in a condo with an assigned parking spot, and there’s plenty of street parking at night. Plus the Firebird is hardly "unsightly"—it’s not a blight on your precious neighborhood, Pollyanna. People who actually take it on themselves to bustle forth and do this kind of thing really need to find something to do with their time ("I’m so upset that there’s cars parked on the street in MY community. I’m going to do something about this!"). I mean, can you imagine being this determined to intervene in the lives of people who are just minding their own business?

I can only hope that the ringing of righteousnous in their ears is loud enough to drown out the tire noise from that Prius.

Above: the sign taken from the windshield of the Firebird.

Below: The Firebird, safe for now.

They got this Escort, too.

Later: the Escort relocated, and is safe.

shit bitch, this blog is fucked.

What the hell?
Aug 2, 2008 at 12:44 am

Jen Dunnaway needs to stop complaining about so many things, get a life, and start writing about something worthwhile. It seems more and more articles by CarDomain staff on this site keep centering around whining, and nitpicking, and bitching about the most irrelevant things possible. They have every right to request a vehicle be moved after that long, period. Why the hell would you care anyways? This is worth writing about? And this is an editor?!

Wow, look at the B.S. on this one.
Check this out,
“I know that in your small little world your the king, and you rule everything,” BUT,
Check this out,
You don’t,
Other poeple just put up with you,
Ah, “Jackass”
Those of the same breed flock together, save the,
“the polic and, parking people think I’m rite.”
Were I’m from some of you would’nt last a week, and might I add, most of you, would’nt have much to go home to. “Get it.”
I hope for all the hard working “MIND THIER OWEN PEOPLE”-that one day you puff up to the wrong person.

Thanks Jen for helping a fellow Escort owner and standing up for the rights of cars. I lost my 77 LTD because it was parked in front of my house for a while, not moving…because I was in jail. City came and towed it away. It was not blocking anyone else’s house, it wasn’t causing trouble, it wasn’t doing anything wrong. It got towed anyways. By the time I got out, the impound fees were too much and I could not afford to get it out. You people need to just leave these cars alone. Did the car rape your dog or something? What is the real story behind this? The person leaving the signs under the wipers probably can’t afford a car, and they are envious that other people have a car that they can leave sitting for a while and not use it. GAH! I freakin hate people who can’t mind their own business. Also, you Chris, you don’t like the look of your neighbors car? Who cares? Maybe I don’t like the look of your car, should I get it towed? The world is turning into a damn home owners association! Get a hobby folks…seriously.

@ NS Nova:

Listen here I’ll break it down for the slow people who think “mind your own business” is what should happen. If the Neighbor parked his car in his driveway where I cant see it then I have no beef with that.. him parking the thing (ill say it slow for NS NOVA) IN FRONT OF MY HOUSE… makes it MY BUSINESS.

Sorry Chief… My POS driving neighbor and I have exchanged words. Politely we exchanged our views. He thinks he’s right and I think I’m right and so the game continues. My beef is that he just moves the car… he never drives it anywhere and its like one of 5 that he owns but chooses to park this one across from my home.

I actually don’t like the looks of his car and while you think “tuff shit, its legal” that isn’t completly true. The local police desk knows my phone number now and the desk folks that run traffic and parking actually think it’ll take only once of him getting towed to get him to put it in HIS driveway. I’m patient and persistent.

As to your puffy chest comments “some people need to mind their own damn business” “need thier face shoved in before they learn to mind thier OWN business” blah blah blah… feel better now? big guy? you showed me… freekin infant response.

These criers, moaners, and cop callers are the same kind of people!! They couldn’t find guts enough to ask the driver face to face to “please move your car” to save thier souls. You don’t like the “looks” of a car in front of your house? tuff shit !! It’s legally parked ? ,,,GOOD! then mind yur own goddam business!!! some people need thier face shoved in before they learn to mind thier OWN business .

Uh Sorry Lady… this car should be towed plain and simple. If the cars been there more than 72 hours bye, bye… I have a neighbor that loves to park his POS car across the street from my house… the things a HUGE eyesore but, he legal as long as he moves it. He knows I dont like it there and he knows that I call parking enforcement DAILY to have them come and chalk the tires. Mind you he doesn’t park this car in front of his house, which is around the corner.

Now I dont agree with the whole sign thing… leave a persons car alone… let law enforcement deal with it. But please… dont whine to me about its not doing any harm to anyone, its ok it sits there. No, sorry, not in my neighborhood. You spout “I mean, can you imagine being this determined to intervene in the lives of people who are just minding their own business?” oh please have a little respect for YOUR community. I for one wont let it go to he!! because some a$$ wants to park his heap around the corner from my house… maybe, just maybe, people like to park near their homes and not walk forever to get there.

Bottom line, get off your soapbox, get involved with your community to make it a better place to live and not become a used car lot for abandon vehicles.”

My favorite sign that I see on occassion doesn’t say police or make note of how long the car has been abandoned. It simply says:

“Body in Trunk!”

a couple days later the car is towed ;-P

Been there, done that. Both called in cars that were sitting and had mine called in for just sitting. Really, if the car is that big of a PITA for you, call the cops. They’ll check with the owner and deal with it for you. Putting stuff under the wipers is a great way to ruin the blades – if I caught you doing that, you might not do it again any time soon. Good call on removing the signs. I hate that crap.

I worked nights and someone had my car towed from right in front of my apartment cuz i parked it in the same place everyday and they thought it was abandoned…at first i thought it was stolen but after i called the police they came and picked me up and took me to the impound yard to get my ride…if people just minded their own business the world would be a greater place.

My car was in worse condition when I left it in my apartment’s parking lot for a few weeks…I lost the badges and the right rear tail light was broken…
damn queers…
what the hell do they get from doing that anyway?
and guess what the security said when I reported this?

All I know is, if that was my car, I’d be pulling a stake-out/ major ass-whooping! Snitching on me and touching my car??? Be the last time that dude ever thought about doing that. Mind your own damn buisness, or get a job as a meter maid. Twerp.

Tony
Jul 31, 2008 at 7:14 pm

If the guy has his stickers up to date, it doesn’t really matter if it’s being moved or not. The cops can’t really do anything about it.

It’s kind of a waste of time in that sense.

We’ve had this guy whose alarm goes off every time a somewhat loud car goes by (every 15 minutes or so). I’ve been really tempted to put shit on his car too, although I never do. I just report it to the cops any day I hear it since it’s affecting my work and my sleep and has been for months.

In that case if someone put little, easily removable cardboard signs on his car I’d be a lot more accepting of it lol.

Jul 31, 2008 at 6:20 pm

the issue here is there are very very few parking spaces in front of the building, and this “mint” (that’s laughable…its not THAT nice) trans-am has been sitting in the same spot for multiple weeks. the car hasn’t moved…at all. it should be towed. the owner obviously doesn’t care about it

val
Jul 31, 2008 at 5:55 pm

I understand the fact that the car might be stolen or abandoned, but seriously some people have too much time on thier hands, catch the looser and put a “kick me” sign on his back or something. If i saw that id confront them and tell them to find better things to do than to touch other peoples cars, its like a violation of private space.

Oafman
Jul 31, 2008 at 5:53 pm

I find it interesting how many people responded pro or con to this post with very stong and sometimes foul language. Most of the responses just prove one thin, rude people like messing with other people’s business. I say leave the car alone, if the police really wanted to tow it and fine the guy he would. If you want to be a busy body call the Police, they are in the phone book. Putting huge notes on the car is just silly.

E
Jul 31, 2008 at 5:30 pm

ha.

I’m no parking nazi but it just doesn’t seem THAT difficult to move your car every 3 days.

Going out of your way to leave signage all over a vehicle? Not my style.

…but I might feel different if I had to vie for parking on streets where tickets are dealt out daily.

I feel that touching another persons car is just as bad as putting your hands on the person there self and should not be a talking matter but a time for a serious beat down. I think thats whats wrong with people today everyone is in somebodys business and not their own so dont get on here and talk about it find a way to see who is doing this and kick their ass, or atleast break some fingers so they wont be writing on cars for awhile.

RJ Walker
Jul 31, 2008 at 5:17 pm

wow. sometimes i can understand when a car has been parked and abandoned by some crackhead who probably stole it, but i doubt a trans-am as nice as that one was just abandoned. it’s not your responsibility to move it. whoever owns the business it’s in front of needs to call the police and see if they can find the owner. but still. you don’t leave notes to the police on somebody’s car.

Personally, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with this. If the guy is illegally parked, then he’s illegally parked. And if city parking in your town is anything like mine, then this car should be moved. So every apartment gets a parking spot?!Big deal. A lot of people own more than one car, including you, Jen. We already know you’re pretty self righteous about your cars and feel like other people are ignorant for not thinking like you (referring to your oil drip pan story). But if this car is abandoned or stolen, then the police need to be notified.

I totally agree with blog posters “A” and “E”. Trans AMs, whose owners have obviously been sentenced to a minimum of 6 to 48 months in count and strongly resemble Kid Rock, need to be towed after the 72 hour law has been broken. Especially when we have to pay up to $8 a day to park across the streets….

A
Jul 31, 2008 at 3:37 pm

that ugly car has been there for a FEW WEEKS!!!!! its pretty annoying when there is an abandoned car taking up a valuable parking space in an area where parking spaces are few and far between. and, like “E” said, “Regardless of whether or not there is any sign posted, the City’s Traffic Code does not allow a vehicle to be parked on a city street for longer than 72 hours.” i say the ugly trans-am has got to go…obviously the owner doen’t care about it, so niether do i…

Jul 31, 2008 at 2:12 pm

I too have multiple cars. I was terrorized by a neighbor who didnt like seeing my Trooper on the street. I didnt get cardboard signs, but my city’s parking enforsment was marking my tires with yellow grease pen every 2-3 days to check if it had been there 72 hours. I didnt bother cleaning the tire untill they finally gave up trying to tow my ride. It looked like a rulet wheel. I made sure I moved it every other day and parked it in front of the neighbors house as often as possible.

I suspect that same neighbor is responsible for the key marks, the broken mirror and the smashed pumpkin on the hood as well. Good thing the trooper is a tough old girl.

Jen, Are you sure that car hasnt been abandoned?

Whomever is taking the time to make those signs really needs to get a life. If you have nothing better to do than to try and attract attention to a car that is doing no harm to anyone or anything, then you seriously need a hobby. I am very particular about my car and I wouldn’t appreciate someone putting something like that on my car. I dare say it would probably even piss me off, for several reasons. I don’t know which act is more astounding, someone being such an egomaniac as to think that they have the right to dictate what someone else does with their personal property or the fact that someone would leave such a pristine example of late ’80s TA sitting unprotected on the street for an extended period of time like that.

Brian
Jul 31, 2008 at 12:02 am

This happened to me once. I’m a college student and live in an apartment complex less than a mile from school so I usually. I work on campus as well so no need to drive to work. And since I drive a pick-up, I never have to worry about driving when my friends and I go out. So the truck just sits there normally. Nosy people in the building started complaining that someone had “abandoned a truck” in our lot and asked for it to be removed. Apparently the parking pass in the window wasn’t proof enough that I, the owner, lived there for them. So now I’ll just periodically move it to a different spot from time to time or drive somewhere when I really don’t need to.
