Big Splash
Let’s say that it’s raining really, really hard, and you’re facing a deep puddle while traveling down a major thoroughfare. Do you speed up or slow down? We did some firsthand research during a major downpour yesterday. The verdict? We didn’t have a radar gun, but we didn’t see many people slowing down.

hey dunkel mann, if you were using common sense, why do something with the risk of hydroplaning? slow down… stay in first gear, and with some help of the clutch, keep your revs up to prevent water from seeping into your exhaust pipe if you’re in a car… i don’t drive an A/T so i don’t know how to do that if you’re not driving stick. hehe. =P probably best if you just follow a bigger vehicle through so the water’s a bit shallower if you’re driving A/T.

in my truck i would do it. a car? no way in hell. slow the fuck down. also, it depends. if its on an empty highway with nobody around or no poles i could hydroplane into, i would floor it. Unlike most people i seem to have this uncommon thing called common sense.

In a Truck or SUV when it looks safe I hit it as fast as I dare. Theres nothing cooler then when you hit that puddle and everything goes blurry until the windshield wiper goes by, that is as long as you know theres nothing in front of you. In my car I’m a little more concerned about sucking water into my intake.

it all depends upon whats around you. nothing go like hell cuz u idiots only gonna kill yourselves but if theres a kid, car or a building slow the fuck down

except for one or two of you, the rest of you are all absolute fuckin’ idiots. Sure its fun to rip thru puddles until that one time you cross four lanes heading for that puddle on a rural route where some Trailer Trash decided to be nice to thier kid for once and let them play out side. Next thing you know you just hydroplaned through that innocent puddle and KILLED an innocent child trying to have a nice day for once. So I guess all of you are what…15 years old?
Puddles and driving? Nothing will happen to you, and your car will live to see another rainy day.
…but is it worth it?
Slow down or go around…

ha ha, well depending on the puddle also, i slow down just before it, and if its looking good enought right before i stomp onit with the el camino, ha ha i got 325 wide street slicks on the back, i can eb cruising at 45 miles an hour and slide that thing any direction i want in a puddle, so i always stomp on it hard and let it slide a bit

If i have a skid plate for the front of my motor… Let the peddle make sweet love to the floor boards, we going hard and fast!!! But if not then its slow down time… pushed in a crank seal smoking a puddle with no skid plate so I learn the hard way.

Me and my friend, in his civic ‘94.Driving down the road, he was driving, an idiot.Goes through the puddle with about 10cm of water, doing 80 km/h, car lifts up of off the ground good 20cm, we r in the air now, going for the drive way that was in front of us, he turns the wheels all the way to the left, hoping to go left once we land, WRONG, we go sliding, right into a curb, CV joint and front axle gone, we go flying over the curb, passing one of the big tree’s cm’s away with passanger side, almost killed me.
Mind u that guy had 22 accidents in 2 years with Mitsubishi Endeavor, he bought it in 2006, til today he had 15 accidents with it, and 7 or 8 with rental cars, the guy is an IDIOT.

old sube awd..bigger wheels..no electronic and slow down? I think not. I giggle every time I have to face the big bad puddle in the itty bitty sube. LOL.Deep enough turns it into a jet ski. And yes public streets in central maine go there more oft than not.

Who slows down? Not too long ago, it was pouring and there was a puddle at the end of an intersection. I was in the right lane, and a minivan in the left lane had slowed down, but I sped through the water. My passenger told me afterward that the van’s window was down! Lol, now that was hilarious. My friends who were in the car behind me said the spray was taller than my truck.

There was a huge puddle at least 2 feet deep at the parking lot entrance to the local mall. Now most people would go to another entrance including myself. This one absolute idiot in a 98ish civic floored it and tryed to get though. Makes the half way point and just dies. Then the car starts flooding inside! So he wades back to “shore” and calls a towtruck and sits there on the curb for ten minutes in the pooring rain. Meanwhile I’m watching the whole thing while parked and I was just roaring with laughter.

I Must admit I love blazing into puddles. Both our vehicles love the water and it’s a bizarre feeling when you hit a big puddle like that and it slows you down.
I remember after a really bad snow storm there was this HUGE puddle in the middle of the road so I had to go through it. I think I lost track after 6 times through it.

People like driving there car in deep water, its makes them feel as if there “off roading” in there family sedan. Untill they hit the deep part of the puddle and the car stalls out.

A lot of people where I live are absolute cowards, and steer AROUND puddles, even if the puddle is only taking up half the lane and it’s half an inch deep. Personally, I change lanes to go INTO puddles, and usually speed up or keep my speed the same.

In our PT Cruiser I slow down. It is under a lease and tends to float like most front wheel drive small cars. In our Suburban I speed up and steer into the deeper sections to see how big of a rooster tail I can form.
