Fun Field Trip: Go See A Tucker

By Jen Dunnaway

Ever seen a Tucker in real life? It’s kind of like seeing a unicorn, right? You’d be surprised, but arranging some face-time with one of these awesome rides isn’t like putting a man on the moon. The Tucker Club of America lists nearly all of the surviving 48’s on their website with info on the museums at which the cars are displayed, and they’re actually pretty widely distributed throughout the US. Well okay, the lion’s share is in California, of course. But you might also luck out if you’re in Georgia, Pennsylvania or Michigan. There’s even a handful of the cars living abroad. I’ve seen a Tucker once in my life—it was part of a temporary exhibit on automotive design at an art museum in Montreal—and I can tell you that seeing an iconic ride like the Tucker right up close is absolutely a worthwhile day-trip. Always. See if there’s a Tucker in your state!

Too bad the movie was Hollywood’s candy coated version.
.
Tucker wasn’t really all that honest of a guy…
.
He is thought of as a victim by the “Big Three”, but he
was far from perfect, and had some pretty shady business practices…
.
Unfortunately, many people see the movie and think it’s the truth…

I’ve seen one up close. It was a maroon color and it was emaculate. The guy was on a cross country car show trip with it and happened to stop at a local po-dunk town show in Blenheim NY. Awesome car, and the guy was like a rolling encyclopedia on it.

Go see the Tucker in LeMay’s America’s Museum facility at the old Marymount School in Tacoma. You can get right up and personal with it to inspect its Franklin-derived rear-mounted engine and its interesting safety-inspired interior.

I saw the Tucker in the Tallahassee museum last weekend while cruising through in my new 63 Ford Falcon Station Bus. If you ever get a chance to visit that museum, do it. It is the best, by far, of all of the auto museums I have visited, currently at 34 and counting.

To a true car person, it is worth the side trip to see it. Plus, the owner is the guy working the front desk on a Sunday. Well worth the stop.

When I was a kid I saw a Tucker at an auto museum in Lancaster PA. It is an amazing car to see in person
