El Cutlass or Camino Supreme?
By Rob Einaudi
Editor-in-Chief
Check out Mike’s awesome project, which is the result of mixing an El Camino with a Cutlass Supreme. I love the "open disclaimer" on his ride page:
You might be thinking "That’s just wrecking the El Camino" (Or Cutlass for that matter.) Neither is exactly true. The El Camino needed a complete restoration due to being a daily driver for numerous salty southern Ontario winters. I’m restoring it, but I’m choosing to use Oldsmobile parts. The Cutlass was scrapped because it needs a Y pipe, brake lines, and some heavy duty patching to the trunk and rear frame area. I need the front end and interior which are both in good shape, so it works out well.
The car is currently getting some stuff done at the body shop, and Mike is promising more photos soon. I can’t wait to see the finished result!

I was thinking a long time ago about putting a Seville front clip on my 79 Eldorado (Paris coupe conversion), but wasn’t sure if it would work or be popular.
Your car proves that it is doable and very hip, nice work and very good taste. Look forward to seeing the final paint job.

Even both being G Bodies, it’s still hard work. I’ve always wanted to do that swap myself. It would be nice with a 3rd gen Camaro rearend for the rear disc and the cars Master cylinder/booster with those rims that look like Monte Carlo SS rims that the 1st gen S series came with or those rims.
On a related note theres a I think 2nd gen s-10/sonoma with an 80’s BMW headlight and grille treatment. then I saw a red on that looked like a truck GM made just for BMW or it was an Isuzu, hah!

Good question Bryant but no. I was originally going to put everything from the El Camino back in the Cutlass and run it as a derby car since all I needed for the interior was the driver’s seat and column, but I scrapped the idea due to the soft/non existant frame and tendency for these cars to fold like lawnchairs even with good frames. If you look on my site there’s pictures of the Cutlass being hauled away, I got $100 for the shell from a guy who wanted the 305. I’ve still got the Elky front clip and doors in my backyard, for sale on kajiji Brantford.

Nice, I’ve seen one at a local car show with a grand prix front clip on it. I think they called it a grand camino.

Yes Chris, the doors are a direct bolt up, the hinges are the same. It almost closes properly, I’m leaving it to the pros to do the final fit. I did have to use the doors to fit the fenders. I hadn’t planned to, I was going to just swap over the regulator, glass and door panel to the Elky door but there was a huge gap between the rear of the fender and the front edge of the door. Also I tried to use as many Cutlass parts as I could, my intention being to build a Cutlass pickup and not just an El Camino with a Cutlass front clip.
For anyone interested I’ve got a poll on my page to pick an official namr for this beast.
Thanks again to everyone for the kind words and positive feedback. I just wanted to build something unique, I really didn’t think so many of you would dig it!

are the Doors a direct bolt up? did you have to use those doors because of the cutlass fenders?

I also did something very similar to this years ago using mid to late ’70s versions of the El Camino and a Cutlass 442. I’ve always beed a big fan of unique cars like this. Very good work!

You have a brilliant idea there. You are truly being resourceful, yet tasteful all at the same time. Just do us a favor and remove all badging that you can. That will add to a cleaner appearance. I anticipate your new photos.

I think this is a very creative idea. As a long time Oldsmobile lover and owner of a 68 442 Convertible, I’d love to give my efforts in hte painting and interior design sceme for this project. Go for it. By not call it a 221, or half of a 442…

I love it!! I would have used the euro front clip personally. Has anyone seen pics of the El Camino with this same conversion done, but they used a Luxury Sport Monte Carlo front end, REAL CLEAN!

A kid I went to high school with (back in 2000) did this exact thing as a project with his dad. they called it an “Olds Camino” Even took the “olds” from an oldsmobile badge and the “camino” from an el camino badge and put them on the fenders.

I’d like to thank everyone for their kind words, I’m very honored to be feautured like this. I know not everyone’s going to like what I’ve done or think it’s a big deal, but remember it’s not just the front end cosmetics, I’ve got 150+ hours into this but most of it was switching over the full Cutlass interior, wiring harness and all. Anyways, thanks aagain to all, I can’t wait for everyone to see my vision complete, unfortunatly it’s out of my hands and I’ve been bugging my bodyman like crazy to get on it!

I can’t argue his point. My auto hero Chip Foose does this kind of thing, and the results are stunning. Obviously this guy can’t claim he has a factory ‘one-off’ because we get to watch him create it, but then he does have a “one-off” kind of unique car that looks like a factory could have made it. Damn the purist! This is what real car lovers do (when thier not polishing the rare ones that is!)

It’s great! At least it’s made fom two GM vehicles instead of some retarded-ass combo like dodge and ford combined.

dude, this shit’s ILL right here! Good luck with it, and I can’t wait to see it done. All he needs to do now is throw the turbo V6 from a Grand National, and it will be a frahnkenshteen to the max.

honestly its the same platform so this really isnt that hard or unique. Your right James, its things like these thats ruining GM

I hate the fact that all of GM’s cars are capable of switches like this… takes away from the unique aspect of the front end swap.
I think GM has no heart and soul in their cars anymore, let alone brains.
