Be Proud of Your POS!
By Mike Musto
AKA Mr. Angry
I got to thinking about my previous blog where I wrote about how all my cars broke down at one time, and I began to wonder who, aside from myself, drives a POS. I would assume the list is quite long since I see a bunch of them rolling around on the streets these days, although that may just be because I live in Queens. As I mentioned in my previous blog, my daily driver and POS (actually it just cost me $1,200 to fix) is a 1997 Mercury Villager, AKA the "Danger Van," with 117k miles on the clock.
I am now into this thing for a grand total of $3,700, including the purchase price, and it’s been worth every penny. You see, the best part about driving a POS on day to day basis is that I simply don’t care what happens to it. Door dings, rock chips, broken parking light–all inconsequential. Am I rollin’ heavy in this thing? Um, no. In fact, I am probably driving the only vehicle in existence that guarantees I won’t get any play with the ladies. But that is not what a POS is all about it. I mean, look at the basics. I’ve got vehicle which I don’t worry about, it runs awesome (at least now it does), it has power everything, a tape deck (where’s my Poison cassette?) and the A/C blows ice cold. To top it off, I can put a hell of a lot of stuff in the back. To me, it’s the perfect daily driver.
So now I want to throw it out there to all you people who drive a POS. Post them up and let them stand proud alongside the Danger Van! Seriously, do me justice and post ‘em up or I’m going to feel like a complete tool for writing this blog.

1990 jeep cherokee. bout for 250 dollars with a destroyed radiator. 275K, Blown transfer case, head gasket is gone, rear main seal is gone, severe compression resulting in exhaust leaking into my coolant and it refuses to accept actual coolant. elec fan broke, doors dont open, painted flat black, 2 inch hole in door, driver seat slants to one side, smashed everything. Oil leaks onto exhaust resulting in smoke bellowing out from every corner of the jeep, etc. etc.

I hear ya. I purchased “Grumpy” my 1997 Chevy Astro with 297K miles for $250 with the intention of entering it in the 2008 BA/BE Rally. Its PO used it as a cargo van for about a year, put 118K miles on it, and never cleaned it. It had a weak fuel pump and missing rear seats when I bought it. It leaks from the oil cooler lines, power steering doesn’t work at idle, needs the fuel injectors cleaned, HVAC blower doesn’t work, and idler arms need replacing. I spent $30 on a eBay fuel pump rebuild kit, found some free seats, took out the garbage, and vacuumed the loose stuff to keep the dog from eating it. It is currently sporting The A-Team Van stripe, a cardboard 7 slot Heep grill, and various Heep YK markings. The rear windows have http://www.baberally.com and “It’s a Heep thing” on them. I find myself really enjoying cruising it around knowing that I have less invested in it than most people pay for a single car payment.

I have to tell you about my POS ,
especially since it is the same van , 1994 Mercury Villager GS .
I only paid $300 , but its worth about that .
It works , pretty well actually , but looks ugly and is pretty unsafe . It has a plexiglass rear window , big hole in the exhaust manifold ,stupid electric seatbelts that work intermittently , no dash lights at night ( pretty unsafe ) , no rear running lights at night ( daytime driving only , or you drive with the 4 ways on at night ,
what else ??? oh yeah rear door is busted , covered in rust ,
1 winter tire with 3 bald all seasons , also it had this ridiculous problem with the neutral switch where you had to charge the starter manually from the battery everytime you wanted to start the thing ??? how ridiculous and ghetto is that ???
Everyone gives me dirty looks when drive it in a good neighborhood .
I love this van though , super comfortable , handles well ,
very fast , good on gas , nissan mechanics .
I use this thing as a work vehicule , often driving 100 – 200 kms
per day in downtown bumper to bumper traffic , this thing is tough !
Much Mercury Villager Love !

I still love and have my ‘85 chevy custom deluxe suburban. It was an X North Dakota water department vehicle that has a 6.2L diesel engine, 400 tranny with about 230k miles on it. It sat for a couple years before I got it and mice had filled the mufflers with dog food so I cut them off and like Jeremy, replaced them with cheap 29″ cherry bombs. I love the sound of the exhaust, with the stock 2.5″ pipes it’s really got some snap to the sound when you get into the throttle. The body is ugly dull tan which still shines where the water department sticker used to be on the doors and has enough rust and cancer too keep a body shop busy for a couple months. Again being as cheap as I am, I scraped the flaking paint off and sprayed over the rust. The grille was missing from a fender bender so I used industrial 1/4″ thick steel mesh that I had laying around and made myself a grille that I dare any bird to duel. A chain and a tree to pull the dents out of the hood and she was good to go.

1989 Honda Accord DX hatchback, 91K orig. (not bad at all) but the body, is pretty much rotting off around me, it has a huge burnt tip fart can (cause im too cheap to replace the stock muffler), its also spray painted to look like the treuno in Initial D (jap vinyls and all) its an auto, 2.0 carb. its slow as hell, but at 35+ to the gallon i love the hell out of it. i also bought it for $200

I have a 91 GMC sonoma that I have had since high school. I bought it dirt cheap and dont give a dang what happens to it. I am currently in college and some of my buddies have nice new cars that are now littered in door dings and paint chips. My door dings and paint chips add character to my truck. To top it all off, when it comes time to move out, i can haul everything in 1 heaping load. The best part is it was so cheap i never once had to make a car payment! To all you parents who buy your kids cars…DONT! Let them buy there own car, and most likely it will be a POS they will fall in love with.

I got a 1998 Olds Bravada that is about falling apart. The winshield wipers don’t work in the rain, transmission is slipping, rearend fluid just about all leaked out, power window motor in the drivers door went out, AC quit working shortly there after, and the Headlight wiring was shorting out. I added some wheels and a hood and some minor mods and no one will ever know.

I have a 2008 Ford Mustang GT 500. I hate it. It is the biggest POS. A stock z28 camaro keeps up with it. I make 180,000 grand a year so I have money to do stupid stuff. So I bought a Ford GT. If anyone wants pictures or videos send me your email. Anyways I will go down the highway in my POS and do a first gear drop. I’m trying to blow this thing but I want to put it to its limit. I’m surprised I haven’t yanked the e brake handle off. The tires are bald. And I did finally blow it last night… Thank God

YOU SEE!! I knew I wasn’t crazy when I posted this. Everyone, I don’t care who you are or what you do has a POS in the closet (or in the driveway) and I love the fact the so many people have posted theirs up. The comments are spot on as well. Think about, you CAN sit on the hood or the roof and not worry about scratches, you CAN put loads of crap in there and not worry about it getting dirty, you CAN park them anywhere and not worry about them.
This is the beauty of the POS!! KEEP EM’ COMING!!

Aside from my Chevy trucks and my old Challenger I have a old 91′ S10 blazer that I got for $150 just to beat on because there is no way I was gonna beat on my other cars. I went to register it a few months ago because it gets pretty decent MPG and the other cars average about 17 so I figured I’ll save some money in gas. My friend and I pulled up in it to get it inspected and the mechanic that was sitting in the garage saw it and laughed his ass off. Needless to say it didn’t pass. Now we’re gonna enter it in a demo derby because my dad and uncle do that stuff on the weekends.

My wife and I have a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am with 300,000 miles on it, and rock that thing daily! We both drive it like we stole it, and it just wont die! She drives an hour a day to and from work with it 5-6 times a week, and I drive it to football games with the kids on the weekend. We bought it new, and since we have owned it, we have been side swiped 4 times, rear ended twice and have had the mirror knocked off. Insurance has repaired it, but I honestly have no clue how this thing is still going.

Dhillaz – Piece of shit, or shorter POS
))
Everyone has, had, one time or another.
Mine was Yugo 45 first, then in Canada when i came i had Nissan Micra 4 door, 4 speed, and then later i bought mighty Ford Tempo 4 door, 5 speed, the beast i called it, took it to my friends farm, out of city, where the sky is the limit, and there aint no sky as far as eye can see, after a night of drinking, results were stunning, hood was full of bullet holes (AK-47), pickaxe in rear right door, and an axe in drivers door, roof looked more like a kiddy pool, but it was worth it.Beat the living shit out of Tempo, and it still went “almost” like new.

Well I have been waiting for a story like this so I could chime in…
I have a 93 Mitsubishi Eclipse 1.8, I paid $100 Bucks total! But here is the funny part…….
2 Days before I Bought this car, It belonged to a Good friend who is kinda Crazy! He had been driving the car for 5 Months or so, and bought it really cheap since his dad is a GM of a Car dealership…
He comes by my work with a can of spray paint and ask me to HOOK it up and make it “Look” fast…. 45 Min and 4 Cans of Black paint and 1 can of silver we made it “LOOK” stupid..You bet it had flames and Spirals, NOS all down the side, and a Killer skull and crossbones on the hood with a EAT THIS tag pointing down tward the Exhaust tip……LOL but that was NOT enough we then went to try and tear the car up! We drove it up and down some stairs, over a bunch of curbs, and took it offroading, Jumped a hill, then I tryed to Run it over with my Nissan Pickup * ANOTHER POS I OWN * and could not get it on the car…..We soon tired and he went home and the car was barley harmed, well all but the new spiffy paint job…….
2 days later he drives up in a new truck! and he wants a a box and needs a harness for it to put a radio in…….We traded for the car in the end……2 Days before the car was a Nice decent all factory red with good paint and no dents, Now I drive it around and it looks like a 14 Punk rock kid Attempted to “PIMP” my ride……Ohh what things you do when you are board …….

LOL this is a great story! But how can you call it a POS when it runs so well? To me a POS is something that justifies something that is literally falling apart and something that you can barley keep running and have it able to drive on the road. I know you said it pretty much guarentees that you wont get any ladies but I bet you could roll up to super wally world in this thing and go find a single mother and she just might dig the fact that you already got the van! Enjoy!

POS is subjective. I use the term for someone’s car in front of me should be in the right lane, almost regardless of make/model/year. I’ve bought POS’s, but most graduated sooner or later to a better category.
-
I don’t think age determines whether something’s a POS, and not necessarily make or model (although there are definitely exceptions).
-
I’m not gonna post my latest ride. It leaned toward being a POS when I bought it, but I pulled it outa that fire immediately.

Spent $500 on my Fiero and dumped another $400 worth of shtruts, brakes, and cooling system parts into it. Runs like a champ and is a blast to drive, gets good mileage too. Only downside is you can’t fit anything in it and the tires squeal around most every corner due to it’s mis-alignment.

i have had plenty of pos started when i was 13 when i was given a 1980 ford Fairmont futura edition i scrapped it later because it stopped working i wish i didn’t i haven’t seen another one since
then my 2nd car was a 1992 mercury grand marquis power everything and you could fit 8 guys in the trunk anyways it had 500000kms on the odo so thats 301000 miles. anyways it was a sweet car didn’t think anything was wrong with it only cost me 500$ then insurance made me get a safety check and it failed horribly i guess the horn relocation wasn’t any good something and something wrong with the drive shaft well i wasn’t about to pour 1500$ into this pos that i have only had for 2 months so i scrapped it for about 300$ then i had a 1995 dodge Dakota with 139000 miles i had that one for about a year till i took it offloading well i let my friend drive and he backed in to a ditch and ripped my front bumper off and then on our way home the tranny started slipping and then pissing fluid so we left it in the woods and the next day we sold it for 1500$

Ah, I affectionately refer to my 93 grand se 4 door 3.3 V6 that I paid all of $600 for as the “blue meanie” being its that ugly pepsi blue color. I thrash the hell out of that thing and it just keeps on ticking, sure it needs a few things here and there after it takes a good beating, but that plant under the hood never skips a beat, regular tune ups keep her running like a champ.

I love my leaky, squeaky, rough riding car! It guzzles gas too!
One pos my grandpa let me drive was a little ‘95 cavalier with massive fender damage. The rear door on the passenger side didn’t open from either inside or out. The best part, IT SMELLED LIKE FUNYUNS!

Aside from my Charger I’ve got a nice little Honda Accord that I paid $2,000 for (after repairs, originally cost me $1,500) it’s been running strong for the last few months only problem is the transmission’s starting to slip and that’s gonna cost me close to $1,000. I guess me and you aren’t different, Charger’s parked in the garage and POS’ driven daily lol.

I just picked up a ‘95 Monte for $560 for my little sister for a first car, and I’ve spent almost twice that just to get it decent. So far, I’ve done struts, car used to have a rear subwoofer in the trunk which the previous owner removed before selling it, the wiring to the rear speakers and lights were destroyed and I had to sort that mess out, a new multifunction switch, various interior bits and pieces (I’m amazed the pick-your-part guys don’t know me by name yet), tires, bodywork, an a/c condenser, new a/c control head, transmission control brake switch, and a security light that I still haven’t figured out yet. Runs and drives like a champ though.

Yea ive got a 93 cutlass wagon aka the the wagster, shaggin wagon, the beast and whatever else its been called but its freakin awesome. It was my moms car and then she was gonna give it away to some friend but they didnt want it so i took it and havent spent really anything on it. runs strong has about 200,000 on the clock. the oil pan leaks so i have to watch that, my bro hit a car with it so the passenger headlight is now a custom clear pop bottle cut up and taped up, and now something electrical has gone wrong and all the windows are stuck down. so im probably gonna have to spend some money on parts to fix it but otherwise its been and amazing car for the past 7ish years for me. it gets used every year for detasseling so its been beaten bloody every summer and it still strong, i love that pos!

Aug 7, 2008 at 2:25 pm
Of all the cars Ive had, its the pos cars I have the best memories from. There was the ford Maverick I rallied on and off road “unofficially” , the jag xj6 I pulled from a back yard that had a tree growing through it (and drove it for two years before the tranny went and i gave it away!), the Torino I played “bumper cars” with (before such things were frowned upon), the B-210 I destroyed after racing around and missing a turn (and laughing with my friends to tears at the resulting V’d bumper making the yellow car look like it had antennas.) and I wont even start on the Subaru’s and vws I rolled in sand pits of long island “just because.” Oh and I cant forget the aerostar (no need to elaborate, it was a van nough said!) Even today, I use a pos honda civic to get to work, no use for a link, just look out your window, you’ll see one with four doors, sun burnt paint and cracked or missing hubcaps! they’re all over, same as mine. great for commuting and the occasional urban driving when everyone else is afraid to drive their shiny cars! So yes, appreciate the POS , but I am glad I have towing and a cell phone these days…

pretty much everything I own falls in the POS category. Mostly because tehy are older and high mileage or unfinished. My wife and I both drive what can be considered beaters, mainly because of the low $ amount invested.
The trooper that is my beater. It dooesnt look bad, but has 220K on it and I just dont care if it gets scrached or dinged or… I’ve got $2200 invested in that one including the new rubber.
Megs car is a salvaged title car that I brought back to life. After I fixed the A/C and got the new wheels and tires on it I’ve got $1100 invested.

lol. If you go to my ride page, the last page has the PAS (piece-a-s***, that’s my way of saying it) I used to have. It was a red 94 dodge shadow. I loved that car because it was given to me note free. But it was in the shop so much it was like I was renting it if you know what I mean. When I got my second car, I lent it to my nephew, and it was stolen and broken into for my stereo equipment. When I recovered it, the interior as well as the ignition was destroyed. So I donated it. I must say, I really miss that PAS, because I kept it real clean. You’ll see the pictures.

the reason the danger van wont die? The VG30 power plant. Its the same motor that Nissan developed and put in its first generation (z31) 300ZX, along with V6 pthfinders and hardbodys. It cant be stopped.
oh, as far as MY daily beater, its a ‘95 Nissan hardbody, 4cyl (ka24), 5spd, 4wd. its slow as molasses on a cold montana morning, but I drive it like I stole it, and all she does is ask for a tank of gas and an oil change every now and then.
my weekend slut is a Z31 Turbo, which I’m slowly modding for track use. what can I say, I’m a nissan guy.
