Mercedes-Benz: “The Japs They Just Cry”

By John Coyle

Editor

When I stumbled across the Mercedes-Benz video "One Goal," late last month, I wrote; "I’m aware that inspirational corporate propaganda can be mind-numbingly bad, but ‘One Goal’ is so awful that I really can’t believe Mercedes had anything to do with it." Well, this morning we got an email from Stuttgart, saying which said; "Somebody in your community published our video on your site without having the copyrights for doing so. We are owning the video and no copyrights to publish the video do exist."

Now, I don’t know about you, but to me, that suggests Mercedes-Benz commissioned this clip, and I have to admit, I’m shocked. And not because the music is obviously a terrible U2 retread. Or that the messaging is basically one hyper-boring corporate cliche’ after another. I mean, that’s pretty standard stuff. But then comes the part where the Bon Jovi wannabe sings "Volvo, they worry, the Japs they just cry." Like, seriously? Last I checked—and I checked 30 seconds ago—"Japs" was still considered a racist term. And since M-B prides itself on attention to detail, the idea that nobody—nobody?—on the brass caught what looks to be a corporate-sanctioned slur is just unbelievable. Maybe they figured it out, which would explain why the video is being purged from the internet. We managed to grab a screen shot from YouTube before it got yanked, and you can read the full text of the lyrics after the jump.

Mercedes-Benz: The Japs They Just Cry

"One Goal"

My brother, told me to watch and make sure that the customer always is right
My mother, told me no matter believe in yourself and persist with a fight

Knowing the job we have, just let us do it right
Going for gold and the big one

Gone is the Beemer and to Audi bye bye
We’re gonna win by using C.S.I.

One goal, defining a vision
One goal, to be number one
One goal, increasing ambition
You can make all the difference, that’s how we beat them all

New C-class
Can not be better, the MLMS  we are not running late
Let’s kick ass
By working together there’s more than one reason that we’ll celebrate

For fulfilling our family, McLaren and AMG

Going for gold and the big one!
At Volvo they worry…
The Japs they just cry

But we are laughing due to C.S.I

One goal, defining our vision!
One goal, to be number one!
One goal, increasing ambition!
You can make all the difference, that’s how we beat them all!

One goal, defining a vision!
One goal, to be number one!
One goal, increasing ambition!
You can make all the difference, that’s how we beat them all!

One goal, to be number one!
One goal, increasing ambition!
You can make all the difference, that’s how we beat them all!

One goal!
One goal!

Racist words are racist for how they’re used, not depending if they’re an abbreviation or have an alternate meaning. Even the “N word” started off having nothing to do with Africans and was applied to Indians (the original ones in India).

I wrote to MBUSA a few weeks ago regarding this video, this is what I got in response below. I guess this means the video was made for the U.K. and/or other English speaking places.

“We can assure you that this is not a
Mercedes-Benz advertisement and it is
certainly nothing produced here in the U.S. We
have forwarded the link you
sent us to our parent company in Stuttgart, in
the event that they have
seen it or have any information as to its origin.

We apologize for any offense this may have caused
— whatever the source.”

You have to remember that Germans (Krauts – is that racist?) have a superiority attitude that they cannot keep under control. They think the overpriced junk they make is superior to everything else. They just don’t get it because they are also so hard-headed. They don’t realize that the Japanese are whipping their snow white asses steadily and surely.
Eventually they will drown in their own sauer kraut juice and beer.
I say good riddance.

Wikipedia:
Jap is an English abbreviation of the word “Japanese.” Today it is regarded as an ethnic slur, though English-speaking countries differ in the degree they consider the term offensive. Japanese Americans have come to find the term controversial or offensive, even when used as an abbreviation. [1] In the past, Jap was not considered primarily offensive; however, after the events of World War II, the term became derogatory.[2]

The reason why J** is considered offensive by Japanese Americans…IMO
Wikipedia:
Japanese American internment refers to the forcible relocation and internment of approximately 110,000 Japanese nationals and Japanese Americans to housing facilities called “War Relocation Camps”, in the wake of Imperial Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor.[1][2] The internment of Japanese Americans was effected unequally throughout the United States. Japanese Americans residing on the West Coast of the United States were all interned, whereas in Hawaii, where over 150,000 Japanese Americans comprised nearly a third of that territory’s population, an additional 1,200[3] to 1,800 Japanese Americans were interned.[4] Of those interned, 62 percent were United States citizens.[5][6]
Civilian and military officials had concerns about the loyalty of the ethnic Japanese on the West Coast and considered them to be potential security risks, although these concerns often arose more from racial bias than actual risk. Major Karl Bendetsen and Lieutenant General John L. DeWitt each questioned Japanese American loyalty. DeWitt, who administered the internment program, repeatedly told newspapers that “A Jap’s a Jap” and testified to Congress,
I don’t want any of them [persons of Japanese ancestry] here. They are a dangerous element. There is no way to determine their loyalty… It makes no difference whether he is an American citizen, he is still a Japanese. American citizenship does not necessarily determine loyalty… But we must worry about the Japanese all the time until he is wiped off the map.[15][16]

Jewish American Princess?? Well that’s new to me…

Jap on the other hand seems like an ‘abbreviation’(Spelling?) to me.
It’s used by fat-ass Americans that are to lazy to pronounce the whole thing.

Whoever posted that first comment needs to hang out with different people. Yes, it is. Just as much as n****r. so if these terms get edited out, then j** should too. Just because you don’t hear japanese and japanese americans constantly bitching, (we’re too busy getting educations and doing something with our lives) doesn’t mean it isn’t offensive. Please, PLEASE hang out with people that you can actually learn from. Try and expand your world past the front porch.

it is american sung, or written. “beemer” (I learned it to be bimmer form people near bimmers)and “C.S.I.” if to see the video it may have been obvious to say but I didn’t. Jap isn’t racist. thats like “hispanic” “negro” or “caucasian”. Acronym, abbreviation, who cares.

I don’t need Urban Dictionary to tell me that “Jap” is racist. I can’t believe this thing got past anyone in the brass. Looks like the cat is out of the bag now. Mercedes… you got some ’splainin to do!

“Jap” is certainly still a racist term – but I am not sure how credible a source Urban Dictionary is.
