Pontiac Names Its Ute, With No Help From The Masses
By David
aka Highspeedhijinks
When Pontiac decided to going ahead with production on their version of the Holden Ute, they were stuck on what to name it. So a few months ago they set up a web site to let the public submit their ideas for names. It was a nice idea, and showed that GM really cared what its potential customers thought. Well now the long wait is over, and it’s official—GM has released the name of their stateside "ute" and the name is…
Pontiac G8 ST
As in, the name that they were going to call it in the first place. Do you feel as cheated and let down as I do? After 18,000 submissions to the web site, GM apparently thought we were all a bunch of rubes and went with its concept name anyways. All I can say is, thanks to the watering down of the American auto industry, we will never have another new exciting product name or a color other than silver.

GXT was one suggestion I liked, also I liked Palomino. Those were two names on MY LIST. Those sound better than UTE. I don’t know where the heck my list is, I gave up after missing the deadline!!

I agree with the name! Can’t be an El Camino if it ain’t Chevy. And besides, the front end looks just like a G8. I agree with Chevy on this one!

well that is a retarded name, that is like naming the new cameros and chargers by a serial number, if we were to call it the el camino it would be another great comeback…but no we had to be europian about it (mercedes and bmw) and give it random letters and numbers

Does it matter? Did you buy your vehicle because of the model name?

GM owns Holden, which means they can use any/all of Holden’s designs. And right now all of Europe and Australia are laughing at the US and GM because of the failure to design invigorating cars with quality in mind.

If it werent for my current 2002 Pontiac Firehawk, I would have nothing to do with GM, Pontiac, or any other ridiculous thing they have done the last 6 years. Amazing!!!

well, they’ll ruin it somehow. they always do. I bet a manual transmission won’t be available. most of GM’s cars are just grandma cars anymore. whats next? an ecotech powered corvette pushing out 130 hp? I’ve got it, they’ll make there trucks bulkier and even more ugly!

Houston Texans and the NFL did the same crap…asked for people to name the new team (back when it was admitted to the NFL) and what did they do….they kept the same stupid name “Texans” that the owner wanted from the beginning…
So there is precedence for this

After submitting my name of this thing, (it wasn’t El Camino or Caballero) I feel jipted and ripped off. The name I submitted was “Velocista” which means “Sprinter” in spanish. Remincient of the GMC Sprint that came before the Caballero.
When it does come out this year or next (I can’t remember) I hope someone or some company makes a new nose for it. I cannot stand the “kidney bean” Pontiac nose on any of their cars. Hopefully in the Chevy style or GMC style, not officially licensed of course.
-
Argh, I hate this crap with the car companies. “Hey we want you to name this car, but we already have a name for it. So your submissions are useless. Good luck chumps.”
-
Stupid execs not in touch with anyone in the ouside world. Every idea for a name they get is beyond LAME. Everything named now is either letters, acronyms, traditional, and hippie BS.
-
I agree with “speedcanhurt”, it didn’t need a new name at all. Do it like the old CRX name. “Honda Civic CRX” Then it could have been the “Pontiac G8 Ute”
-
BAH! whatever. I’m still buying my HHR SS. Even though I hate acronyms.

It didn’t occur to them to call it what it is? You know, ‘COMMODORE’? Or even call it the ‘MONARO’ or ‘CROSS 8′ or something that it is actually produced as in Australia… why does everything imported into the US have to have a new name?

Aug 15, 2008 at 3:17 am
They don’t make any silver cars these days…they are all beige, just different colors of beige. Blue-beige, green-beige, beige-beige. Beige is just the most bland color ever, so everyone wants it, because most new cars are bland. This one happens to be black-beige.
