Spied at Pebble Beach: Genesis Coupe

By Sam Barer

Sound Classics

Pebble Beach might be known for collector cars, but while walking the Blackhawk Collection exhibit this afternoon, I found Hyundai’s new production Genesis sedan and prototype Genesis coupe just sitting there on the side of the back lawn. The sticker on the window even identifies the car as a prototype.

This Genesis coupe is far and away the most beautiful car Hyundai has ever created. Based on what it looks like in the flesh, Hyundai has a real winner on its hands.

Figures Hyundai is ripping off other car makers once again.

It looks like a 370z to me. What else is new?

In the first picture it looks like a Tiberon, and the second, a Solara. They just copied the two cars and made them one. Looks like a nice performance car.

Check out the Korean Genesis website. It looks like they’ve already addressed the front grille issue.

(click on the fourth image to see what I’m talking about.

It looks like they’ve added chrome trim to the front air dams and radiator grille. The trim really brings the appearance upmarket with just that improvement. I’d like to know if the adjustment there will make it to the US showrooms.

I’ve been comparing the Genesis Coupe to the G35 (used, obviously) and not the G37, as the price difference is ridiculous. If you look at a used G35 vs. a new Genesis Coupe, the Genesis wins by providing much of the same amenities, performance, and style for a lower cost of ownership. For example, the Genesis takes regular fuel (though it boasts better numbers with premium). Also, you can expect the cost of repairs on the Infiniti to be significantly higher than that of the Hyundai. That’s mostly speculation, though. If I’m wrong, please correct me. I will say, though, that my mother owns an I30t, and, the repair bills are astronomical for anything other than an oil change.

Yes, the Infiniti is more luxurious, but, if you’re comparing a Hyundai to an Infiniti, that disparity should be expected; Hyundai’s not specifically a “Luxury” brand. Infiniti is. If the G37 had been made by Mitsubishi, Honda, or Mazda (or any other comparable brand to Hyundai), and it still managed to maintain Infiniti’s level of opulence, then we could complain about the Genesis not being as luxurious. Compare the Genesis Coupe to an Eclipse, Accord Coupe, RX-8, or even a Mustang and you’ll see where the Genesis shines.

I’m really excited about this model from Hyundai. Hopefully it deserves the buzz it’s generated.

I don’t have any problems with the front grill, but I can attest that the car looks better in the flesh. I saw the reveal and driving demo when I was at NYIAS and it was pretty dope. Check it out:

I can see the complaints about the front bumper, but that looks like a pretty quick cosmetic fix. This is the first I’ve seen of the coupe and I’m really impressed – to me the back says either BMW or Aston Martin – either way, it’s well done. If the performance and handling matches up with what they did in the looks department, its going to be a real winner for Hyundai.

for a hyundai to look like a g37, i see no complaints.

but that front bumper keeps getting to me; i really want to like it.

hopefully someone comes out with a aftermarket front bumper i can like.

then it would be perfect.

Franxou nailed it. Although I might be able to afford this over a G37

Is may only be me, but all I see is a blend of Tiburon and Infiniti G37 coupe… plus the rear quarter window is awkward…
