Real or Fake?

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

This Speedster was parked outside the office when I walked up this morning. My buddy who owns a real one is on vacation, and I’m not a Porsche or VW expert. So does this look real? I’m kind of thinking it does. Then again, it doesn’t seem to have much in the way of rust anywhere on the body, and the the hood appears to be fiberglass. Either way, it’s damn cool. It’s definitely no trailer queen. More pics after the jump.

looks to trashy to be a kit car.

For starters, I’d like everyone to know that I’m a deranged child that spends most of his time looking at cars on the internet. About 90% of that time is spent looking at kit cars. Basically, the speedster is one of those cars that has so many replicas floating around from like the past forty years that even the most accurate car could easily be a replica. Its a really pimp car, but not necessarily a real one. The engine will tell you everything. Does it drive like a beetle or like a porsche?

There is one in my neighborhood. I can assume they aren’t as rare as a dual range subaru with a bigger liquid cooled carbed boxer, electric choke, and 4w drive train, and maybe some a/c and power windows and cute and puggable.Anyway My guess speedster is original enough to fool me with photos.

A quick way to tell if it is a kit or not is to pop your head under the rear end to look at the engine.

No one would ever let a kit car go like that, so I vote real, too.

looks survivor-y, fo sho.

the speedster emblem always struck me as odd on those. such a squared off techno-ish modern looking fontstyle on a car that looks like a 1920s tenement bathtub.
