Dog Dies In Car As Owners Await Traffic Citation

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

A Texas couple speeding their stricken dog to the vet were forced to watch the animal die as an uncompromising cop took his time writing them a ticket. Michael Gonzalez was clocked doing 100 mph as he rushed his poodle, Missy, to the doc. San Marcos cop Paul Stephens tut-tutted Gonzalez and his girlfriend for putting people at risk and told them, "It’s a dog. You can get another one. Relax." The couple begged him to at least let one of them continue on to the vet with the dog, who was choking, while the other could remain on the scene to be chastised, but the meanie officer wouldn’t hear of it. I’d guess that in this situation, time permitting, a lights-and-siren escort to the vet might’ve been an appropriate response—because it’s unrealistic to think that anyone would stick to the speed limit if their animal was in such distress. But for whatever reason, Officer Stephens chose to let the dog die a sad death at the side of the highway, just to make a point.

Stephens was found not guilty of misconduct following an internal investigation of the incident, though Police Chief Howard Williams agreed that his performance was less than stellar. See in-car police video of the traffic stop here, and also check out the petition to have Stephens fired (thanks, Evan).

yeah sorry to kill your lovely story but the dog was not moving or breathing when the cop pulled them over. its a 20 min drive from san marcos to the emergency vet clinic in new braunfels even if you are going a hundred. The vet clinic had the guy and girlfriend on the phone during the whole ordeal and the dog was not breathing in san marcos. The couple said they would try to get there and maybe they might be able to do something with the dog. the office replied to that with a negative but the guy was histerical while the girlfriend on the other hand didnt even act like it was a big deal. cops are most of the times a lil overkill with nebody they pull over. i hate gettin pulled over, especially for something petty cause they are bored. But this story has been blown so out of wack that its not even funny anymore. I happen to know this cause my girlfriend works at the emergency vet clinic. Get your facts straight. But if you get the chance open that throttle up whenever you can, just make sure if you do get pulled over you are in an actual emergency. Not because you refuse to handle the death of your dog.

Cops can be quite evil at times. Friend of mine got cut really badly working in his garage. Ambulance couldnt make it there in time so I had to take my friend to the hospital. I was going about 15 over the limit when johnny law pulled me over. He looked at me, looked at my friend, then looked at me again and said, So what is the hurry tonight, son? My jaw dropped and I said “well my friend is bleeding badly in the back seat. Can you please help me get him to the hospital before he dies on me?” “UHHH, let me call my commanding officer about that one.” A couple minutes go by and he comes back saying,” I talked to my sargent and he will be here in ten minute to escort you” Not exactly the sharpest tool on the force is the thought that was going through my mind. I calmly said, “well my friend is not going to last that long. Just follow me and if you want you can write me a ticket when I get to the hospital.” So he finally agreed and we got there about ten minutes later with my friend passed out and about two pints lighter. Thank goodness that I made a knot out of my shirt to stop the bleeding otherwise my friend wouldnt be here today. Some cops are utterly worthless. But this story of mine does have a happy ending. I guess I am not the only one who lodged a complaint against that moron. He got fired, my ticket was dismissed and I got an award for my selfless efforts. I know there is no true happy ending for the couple in this article. They might get the officer fired, they may even get to successfully sue the city. But in the end, nothing will erase the memory of watching their dog die because of some corrupt, egocentric piece of rotting rancid fecal matter like that officer.

Well I work at a vets office and I see animals die everyday. Yes all the things he did were wrong but if the cop would have escorted them to the vet the dog would have lived. I have two beautiful Pit Bulls and if one of them were in that same position as the poodle then I would be at that vets office no matter is behind me. Also that toy poodle isn’t a stray that just walks up to your door, or that $100 puppy. Toy poodles are expensive, So it’s not just a dog. The relationship and memories that them couple had with that poodle is worth more than just to watch her choke to death and you cant do anything about it. The way that the guy acted is nothing compared to what I have seen people act over their dog that has an upset stomach or their dog is limping and there is nothing broken.People go histaricle over Somthing that isn’t going to kill their animal. He had every right to act the way he did.

that dude was shaking like he was on crack or something, not to mention talking on the phone in a very easy to tip over truck with skiddy hard tires. he was getting ready to kill a family on a vacation. people like that shouldn’t be allowed to reproduce

cop shoulda tasered the prick, and all for a poodle ;)
that guy was freaking out cop did the right thing

Greg
Aug 31, 2008 at 4:08 am

That cop was totally right for what he did. It is just a pet. I love my pets but you would have to be nuts to let these people go with out a ticket. What pisses me off are the stories of when a cop holds a car with a woman in labor or a diabetic in the back seat and there is a real emergency.

Personally I would have called 911 and informed them to inform the cop to follow to the vets office.
I hope we find out how much they are awarded in the lawsuit sure to follow. Cop was a major tool IMO.

I feel bad for the dog, but 100mph could get them BOTH (and others) killed. Better to let a dog die then to let the dude risk injuring himself and others.

In many countries dogs are considered a delicacy, they should’ve taken the dog to a Bar-B-Q restaurant before the meat spoiled!

Bottom Line: The Cop did his job. The Dog Driver was a moron.

Fire the cop and get another, that one is worthless!!!!!!

Mike

personally, i think that cop needs to be put in that situation or orse just so he knows how that couple feels. I have respect for the law so long as they respect me and my family. I would have not stopped until i got to the vets parking lot providing the cop didnt do something stupid and try to run me off the road.

To be quite honest, I have no problem with the police in general, but that officer has to have been one cold-hearted bastard to have done and said what he did. I won’t outright say that the driver had the right to be speeding like he was, but ask yourself this. If your child was in a similar condition, would you do the same? For those who say ‘It’s just a dog’, quite frankly, in my opinion, you are the one who is just an animal.

damn i dont think there isnt anywhere i go im not at least hittin 100 at least once. i mean yeah if your in the middle of town you’d have to be a dumb ass, but out on a open road please. its not hard to conrtol a car going 100mph. speed limits are over rated and got people brainwashed. if it was my dog we’d be going at LEAST 100. put your self in there shoes. you buy a dog have it for a few years, its like family. now its dying in your car in your lap and your doing what you can to save it. pretty rough stuff if you have a soul which alot of these people dont seem to have. I say if you can drive 100mph (which is easy on open roads) and you can use some common sense about it then why not. i mean if the car came from the factory allowing you to hit it then rock on.

Aug 29, 2008 at 4:26 pm

How about save the dogs life by escorting them the rest of the way to the vet, then take the driver to jail for his wrecklessness.

Anonymous
Aug 29, 2008 at 11:58 am

you people are all crazy who are chastising the police officer for citing an idiot who was driving 100mph. Thats considered reckless driving in most states, and he is lucky all he got was a ticket. And why should the police officer waste his time following them to the vet? Would any of you keyboard warriors do the same thing? Oh thats right you won’t…so shut the fuck up and put your keyboard away or take your head and repeatedly bang it against a wall until you receive common sense.

Nick318
Aug 29, 2008 at 11:30 am

You all do realize that even the fire department isn’t suppose to speed? I mean if they can’t do it, what gives you the right? The cop shouldn’t have let them go anywhere: 100mph, on a cell phone, and weeving in and out of traffic??? Puh-lease! Sorry, but I value people over animals. That stunt of his could have injured, if not killed, many innocent people that night.

The difficult question is if he hadn’t been speeding do you think they would have made it there in time? They would have saved 20min from not having to stop half way there. Which brings me to my next point, how many of you have had a traffic ticket? From my experience 20min is pretty quick.

The officer should be faulted for some of his actions. His choice of words were very poor, and could have done a whole lot better than his, relax it’s just a dog technique. He allowed Mr. Gonzalez to get himself very tense, and in turn destroyed his judgment. If the officer could have kept his cool, he may have gotten them along there way even faster, calmed down the hysterical couple, and maybe of saved the poodle’s life.

They jus needa sit in their cars n keep eating their duncan d’s…

Aug 28, 2008 at 11:58 pm

I can understand the police officers position. However, a police officer is also supposed to use common sense. He could have put the people in his car and drove to the vet and then issued them the ticket. He could have escorted them doing the speed limit to the vet and then wrote them a ticket.

Sounds like very poor judgement was being used by the officer. I just hope he doesn’t use similar bad judgement on other matters or people in the future. Get rid of him.

The cops are given the authority to enforce the law at discretion, I have had a friend who got caught driving at 14 years old, without a license obviously, because his older sister got super wasted and got alcohol poisoning. The cop pulled him over, saw what was going on, and escorted him to the hospital, no ticket, no jailtime, nothing. It’s not the cops right to decide what is and what isn’t a true emergency, and who deserves to live or die. He should have showed compassion, escorted them to the hospital, and then booked the guy for speeding, or even misdemeanor speeding in this case since he was in triple digits. Cops like this like to abuse their power, and make a point. Only thing I have to say is karma is a b*tch, and one day the cop might find himself in that kid’s shoes.

Now that is a discrimination towards animals.
Animals have life too. They deserved to live.
Although I’m a Muslim, I still believe dog should exists in this world despite of their ‘haram-ness’ in my religion.

The cop should at least guide them to the vet, then sue Gonzalez after reaching the destination.

Another example of man’s inhumanity towards animals. The cop should be fired! What a jerk. End of my story.

The guy was wrong for speeding. He deserves the ticket…he put human lives [including his own] in danger. He should have controlled himself and driven 10 miles over the speed limit, like everyone else. I had a dog and cried the first time I lost it…so I have some idea of what he feels like. 20mins is not a long time…the time I got pulled over for speeding the cop kept me there for an hour. I feel form him…but the cop was doing his job.
P.S.
His girlfreind was pretty…dumb ass putting her in danger going 100mph…

There used to be a time when you spotted a police cruiser you felt safe and comfortable. Not anymore! Now I find myself driving out of my way to avoid them. They have staked out my favorite bar just to chase down everyone that left, whether they were driving erratically or not. They even pulled the bar owner over one night (his heart condition prohibited him from drinking) Once they put on that uniform they become Gestapo!

By the Officer’s comment about “It’s only a dog,” he clearly delighted in the misery of the offender, showing his sadistic intent.
That being the intent, I believe the Chief of Department should scrutinize the officer VERY closely from henceforth before the department ends up with one whopping lawsuit from this officer’s sadistic actions somewhere down the road.
The Municipality’s insurance carrier might also choose to look more carefully at renewing the policy at renewal time.
In my opinion, this officer is a ticking time bomb.

Michael
Aug 27, 2008 at 4:22 pm

It seems that this issue has become more about whether you hate cops than it is about whether the guy doing 100 mph was irrational and breaking the law. So try to put your hatred for cops aside for a minute and ask if the guy appeared rational to you. No, he did not. For starters, he was speeding; then when pulled over he acted like he was on something. Clearly that man was not functioning ratinally and if he had calmed himself down long enough to receive his ticket he would have been on his way. Speeding is speeding, and it’s against the law. It sucks for the dog, but the driver was at fault for his actions and instability. Had the officer let him go and he had gotten into an accident and hurt someone – or died – everyone would blame the cop for not “doing his job”.

You may now resume to your hatred for police officers who clearly believe they are above the law and speed unnecessarily.

I’ve been in cuffs inside a cop car being taken to jail when the officer was doing f’n 75 on a MS backroad. Far too many cops just get their jollies off just busting people’s balls for no good reason. I think it depends on the flow of traffic where the stop was made. 100mph in medium to heavy traffic would be pretty negligent of the driver, and would definitely deserve a citation at the least. I can’t see being a big enough dick to write someone a ticket in that kind of situation when there aren’t a lot of other cars on the highway. In any case, I really can’t see being a big enough dick to force anyone to allow their pet to die.

if that was a child in the car choking he would have no problem giving them an escort to the hospital. I treat my dog as a member of my family and to think of this situation is a sad day for animal owners around the world. There should be some sort of animal cruelty law that can do something to this cop. yes the cop was right to ticket him he was speeding but he could have given them the opertunity for the escort and ticket him later.also if that had been a fellow cop and k-9 they would be doing the same cops are above the law we all know it and thats why there has been no action taken i see cops roll threw stop signs and red lights all day thats just as dangerous as a guy doing 100 and no one fines the cops. when incodents like this come to light it makes me shake my head and wonder what this world is coming to when someone who is in a position of power does something like this

The least the cop should have done is escorted them up to the vet’s clinic then proceeded with the ticketing thing after that. That way, the dog would have been saved and justice served to the speeding offender properly. Maybe that cop is a cat lover, that’s why…lol.

The owner of the dog could sew the cop and if he can get him charged with man slaughter because in the case of an emergency your flacers should be on and you should either pull over and say its an emergency or signal the cop to follow. They had a case here where two boys were shot in a store robbery and the cop pulled the car over causeing the two boys to bleed to death in the back seat. The cop was being mean about by writing the ticket causeing a delay a judge viewed the tape and charged the cop with 2 cases of man slaughter i think he got 9yrs.

The bottom line is the guy did NOT harm anyone, so the 100MPH doesnt matter, but the officer Murdered his Dog. that TAX the officer was forcing on him wasnt worth him MURDERING that dog. A Police officer of the Law pepper sprayed my 15 year old toothless grandmother (WOULD NEVER HURT ANYTHING) of a dog in the eyes because she walked towards him, where i was standing talking to the officer. on another occasion a dog was shot and killed by an officer because he deemed it a threat(once again, just walking in his direction, tail even wagging..), which on the video is OBVIOUS the dog was NOT a threat. Lets all stop taking up for our Police force, theyre all murdering, TAXing, organized crime is all they are who use legislation to for TAX’s on us, while they steal and murder.

Aug 25, 2008 at 9:16 pm

Yes the dog died, it’s sad I won’t lie, but, that does not give him the right to go 100mph on the road. Had he been going 80-85, the cop probably would not have given him such a hard time, but he was going at least 30 over the speed limit. He deserved the ticket, you can all argue it out, come up with different ways the cop could have handled it but I honestly think what he did was right.

if anyone is an idiot its the driver. yea it only takes a few minutes to write a ticket, but if the cop hadn’t taken his time the driver would have just sped off as soon as he got the ticket and caused an accident with his wreckless driving. people think they are above the law when they have an emergency. i sympathise for the dog, i have 2 of them, but that doesnt give him the right to put everyone else’s life at risk. imagine if he ran over a child, or struck a car full of people and killed all of them. i understand rushing to the hospital, but 100 mph?? thats fu***n ridiculous. he shouldve been locked up for that.

If someone hits you going over 100mph, you’re going to die. If that car has 2 people and a dying dog in it, guess what, the dog won’t be the only thing dying anymore. Tell me that if you survived a wreck like that, you would be understanding of the people in the other car.

Ok this guy loves his dog I love my car and my life… he placed many people’s life and cars in danger, and this is why there are laws, because everyone does not think logically under stress, so if you are not a person who can put emotions aside to THINK and not risk your life, your girlfriend’s life, and everybody elses on the highway DONT THINK just obey the law it will protect us who don’t act stupid based on love or any other emotion. OH and he could have gotten shot for jumping out that car like that.

Me i would not have stopped or gotten out of my car wouldhave taken My boys to the vet then explained to him go on Fine me but My dog is Dieing. then would have gone to court and fought the ticket .

OK first off yeah the cop was an ass for not escorting them then ticketing them. But everyone knows you do NOT get of the car during a traffic stop unless asked to. So in a way you have to blame the driver for that. He probably would have been right out of there if he would have stayed in the car. What he couldn’t tell the cop that his dog was in trouble sitting inside the car? I feel bad the dog died. But everyone saying the cop should die and shit like that, that’s just ignorant.

That cop should should get fired for stupidity. What if it was a person instead of a dog. Would that cop write them a ticket then or not? Oh, and here where i live the cops are a bunch of pigs. So, Fuck them. I wounder how they would feel if their dog or someone in their family was dieing. Whould they care or would they just let them die right their on the spot.

What an ass. Pull the guy over, asses the situation, and when you realize that their best friend is dying in the car, escort them to the vet and give them the ticket at that time. That is terrible.

When I read the article and saw the video I thought one fuckin thing!! That cop was a hard fuckin headed redneck. I know he had to follow the rules but it only takes 10 min at the most to get a ticket (trust me id know!!) He should of done something to help that poor animal, after all it turns out that he is the goddamm animal for not helping a poor innocent dogg. They should press charges on the dick head police officer for animal crualty cause he was the one that sat there and let the pet’s owners watch the dogg die! so if the cop that did that ever fucking see’s this, all i got to say is FUCK U U FUCKIN DICK HEAD…grow some god balls and if u want come fuckin find me n do something bout this!! PIG ASS BITCH

First off a dog is not a person but it is a friend. People do alot for their friends so the least the cop could have done is escort them and fine them or put them in jail later.

for a dog idk but going over 100 can kill your dog, you, and more people who wins then, but i think the cop could of done better maybe escorted them there in my opinion

What people have to realize is that there’s whole other side to this situation. Lets face it, the average cop is a pussy and a robot just as much as the average person, he’s nothing special, just another Joe Blow. He does things by the book, the way he’s been trained, and he doesn’t think outside of the box. Because if he was a person who was smart enough to think outside of the box, he wouldn’t have become a cop to begin with, he would’ve achieved a better career. Now of course there are smart cops, but they are very few, generally you don’t have smart, intelligent people becoming cops.

So what did he do? He just followed procedure. He thought about his safety first, then thought about giving the ticket. Clearly his intelligence is limited. For one, he took his sweet ass time writing up the ticket. Two, unless he were to follow them all the way to the vet, who’s to say that the driver would not have sped again? Wouldn’t it be safer to escort them to the vet at LEGAL speeds and then given them the ticket there? If the dog still at that point had died, he at least tried his best by escorting them at legal and safe speeds.

Ok, I understand why they were pulled over but as soon as the officer found out of the situation he should have assisted not hindered. He should have escorted them to the pet hospital or had them get in his cruiser, so he could transport them safely and quickly. He made a in compassionate desion and i hope he is held fully responsible for his neglect. To serve and protect is there matto, and he failed.

ok it’s a dog to everyone but to those people it was a loving friend who they cared for so much, people don’t understand these things unless you have a pet PERIOD!

Fuck the cops fuck you man this pisses me off it’s an emergency if I were the cop I’d escort him going 200km\h to where he had to go but since their heartless pricks a wonderful dog had to die for it! And if it were me with that poor dog I would’ve kept going going even faster the dog is more important then a heartless cop!

Aug 24, 2008 at 1:04 am

first off i do hate the cops, but i hate people who r so fucking stupid that they think there dog is like a kid. i agree with the cop that they can get another dog, but if they were to have killed some one else that cant be replaced. people r so fucking stupid

Anonymous

FUCK, What was the dick-head cop thinking? Imagine if his wife/kid was dying and he was on the way to the hospital and s.o stopped him and explained to him “Eh, calm down, it’s just a kid/wife, you can get another one”. I would laugh my fucking ass off. Cops nowadays are just dicks. Period!

Aug 23, 2008 at 10:42 pm

i remember a few years back when a state trooper (i believe from texas) pulled a man over for speeding, as he was rushing his dying wife (she was having a heart attack) to the hospital. that officer did the same thing as this one, and the woman died. the man begged and pleaded for the officer to let him continue to the hospital, but the officer wouldnt have any of it. as far as i’m concerned, whether it’s a person, a cat, a dog, a horse or an emu, the officer should have checked the situation out and allowed the couple to continue with his assistance (in the form of an escort)! that officer should be ashamed of himself, and i hope that if his dog is dying and he and his wife are flying down the interstate to get to the vet, he gets pulled over and delayed like that. after all, as he said, “just relax. it’s a dog, you can get another one”

Anonymous

sick or not these people had no right to break traffic laws. the cop was doing his job he had no rigt to rush or anything just like they had no right to tell him how to do his job. they were doing 100mph clearly about 40+mph over the speed limit…all cause there dog was dieing? wow suck it up you bitch its a fucking dog would you rather of lost control an killed innocent others an your stupid ass? like give it up let the dog die an like the cop said get another.

First off FUCK THA POLICE.. I would have drove all the way to the vet be4 I stopped… I have a dog 2 and if I ever have to get her to the vet fast I be damned if I stop 4 some pig…. That cop was bad so guess what no donut..LOL

johnny
Aug 22, 2008 at 6:06 pm

i totally understand speeding because of an emergency some ppl out there care a lot about their pets sometime even more than they would care for a human being. so for this person saving his dog was worth the rush. And the police officer was a total dick in this situation.

Aug 22, 2008 at 3:52 am

Yeah, it was probably the wrong thing to do. But when you consider all the excuses coppers get for speeding, plus the fact that doing 100mph isn’t exactly safe, he couldn’t exactly let them go. Best thing would have been to take the dog himself, but you have to take into account all the crap coppers get and what he’d have been thinking. Who knows? He’ll end up getting whatever it is he deserves anyway.

Aug 22, 2008 at 12:46 am

There’s no doubt that the officer did wrong by being a jackass and let the dog die, but the guy had no right to be doing 100mph because the dog was sick and about to die. To ME a persons life and well being is more important than the one of a dog.

calichevylover
Aug 22, 2008 at 12:03 am

so he was “coldhearted” but there is no doubt the guy was putting other lives at risk the way he was driving. going 100mph swerving between SEMI TRUCKS on the cellphone. what if he crashed the car?

I stopped at word # 2. “Texas”. That pretty much tells it all.
-
Somewhere in that state, cops are IN clubs and snag people BEFORE they even go for their car keys because they had been drinking. NOT falling down drumk mind you, and without any evidence at all that there was intention to drive.
-
A dead dog due to lack of empathy? Should I be surprised?

I hope the cop chokes on something and no one gives him the hemlic, then his ambulance gets pulled over for speeding, haha.

Aug 21, 2008 at 8:17 pm

A dog is a dog. Cops need to draw the line.I remember clearly getting escorted, and the cop even ran back to his car to speed up the process of getting to hospital, after we were taking an elderly grandma to the hospital turning colors. He simply saw her, we quickly spoke what was happening, and away we went like an oj simpson parade. cops really have ambivelant choices to make. even a cops own k-9 dog is not going to risk a fast trip even in his own cop car…

I’ve seen the video of this on the news. The cop is as cold hearted as a human can get. The only thing that bothered me on the couples part is that the guy wouldnt calm down even a little. I can understand being frantic but the guy was so emotional that he really shouldnt have been driving. Plus he was wimpering like a little girl.
~
Bottom line… the cop was pulling a power trip over a clearly distraught person. Thats pretty low.
