Rat Rods: I’m Over It
By Ron
aka WayTooFurious
The car scene is like any other in that certain trends come and go. I remember some trends with fondness, like when Vans were cool back in the 70s and 80s. However, there are some that I wish would just go away. One of them is this whole "rat rod" thing. As I understand it, the term refers to a hot rod or custom that appears to be in an unfinished state, evoking the run-what-you-brung days of hot rodding, when owners would use whatever was on hand to get and keep their cars on the road. I don’t have a problem with that, but what really annoys me is that quite a few people are stating that they have a "rat rod" when what they do in fact have is just an incomplete piece of crap. Then there are those who I just don’t understand, like this gentleman selling his so-called rat-rod Rambler on eBay. There’s nothing "rat" about this rideāit’s just a matte-black Rambler with red wheels, so what? I don’t know if it’s really just come down to throwing around a trendy term, but as far as I’m concerned you either have a hot rod or a custom whether it’s finished or not. I think it’s time we buried this entire "rat rod" thing. What do you think?

You make too many valid points, same can be said about import rat rods as well. I have seen porsche rat rods, not sure if I would ever call them that BUT some think if you spray pain the rims red and toss a tall shifter on then you can call it one.

Chill, Ron. Say “ommmmmmm”. Get meditative. Purge those negative thoughts & center yourself in the universe. Once you’ve attained some Zen, reappraise the Rambler American rat rod for what it isn’t: no billet tomfoolery, no chrome, no silly engine swap with supercharger through the hood, just you parking this unique jalopy in the driveway of your HOA neighborhood and stirring up trouble http://tinyurl.com/5f25rx. The essence of rat rods is about spirit and chi, the juxtapositioning of seemingly disparate elements into a cohesive whole. And hot chicks who look like Betty Page. Can you dig it now?

I say instead of getting rid of the rad rods we get rid of people that think they have rad rods. and i agree with Kori, specially with the soshinoya’s!

LOL… I’m relieved there’s no chance I’m in volation of the true meaning of JDM. I only deal in the ADM anymore.

Well I don’t really know too much about the hot rodding scene, but I do know a little bit about rat rods and i will agree that this is DEFINITELY not one…
However, along with your train of thought on rat rods in the U.S., I think it’s easy to point out what “JDM” has become in the U.S. also. Like you said, people with incomplete cars, skewed perspectives, etc. the title “JDM” has been, now, redefined in the U.S. as:
1) anything you can find on ebay thats labeled JDM
2) anything with the word “altezza” in it
3) people who think wheel/tire fitment is the definition of JDM
4) Soshinoya’s on your car (most “JDM” heads probably dont even know what that is)
5) ANY body kit/rim/interior option you can think of, as long as its in a japanese car, people think its JDM
in all honesty, i think the fact that america is so obsessed with trends and americans fitting in with one-another, that anything that was once original, and once had a true value and name, soon becomes crap because of the amount of posers, wannabes, and cheap asses that are out there.
hopefully there will be a time where any hot rod is a true hot rod and is labeled as it should be, and any car thats labeled as JDM, really is that..something from the japanese domestic market.

The seller is or thinks he’s being savvy, basically “hey, I paint the thing matte black (a very forgiving finish when spraying it on), make the steels some outlandish color, clean it up, put a Mexican blanket or two over the seats and I got a Rat Rod… people pay too much on Ebay so I can’t lose…!”

The sad thing? He very well could be right. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if someone got enthused about thie “Rat Rod” enough to take ownership.

That’s the way the world is. Stupidity has no remote control.

A well done rat rod can be cool, but flat black and red wheels does not a rat rod make my friend. Rat rods also tend not to have perfect body panels like this Rambler. They are supposed to have a well worn look. That body looks mint and the paint looks fresh. This is a poser rat not a real rat. As stated before a rat rod is ‘ratty’ because good looks does not always mean fast. I have a friend with what i would call a muscle car era rat rod. It is a Nova with 4 different color body panels and not a single spot of shine on it but in a drag race it moves like a bat out of hell.

Hey, that hot satin-black paint is what I wanna use on my diesel Escort! That doesn’t make it a rat rod, though…

I like some rat rods but not all. I think its like any trend, when it becomes popular people who just dont get it start trying it and missing the whole point. The other problem is its a term but like most car terms not well defined or a huge distinction. Kinda like street rod, to some people its any car that is driven on the street, to others any pre 57 car with performance modifications and yet others like me it means a pre 49 car with performance modifications. What makes a muscle car? Ask 5 different people and you will get 5 different answers on years, the first muscle car, the cut of date for muscle cars and a million other things. Rat rod is the same deal, when it was new there were some cool creative cars, now every deuschebag calls any unfinished car a rat rod regardless of vintage, make or style. To me it will always be a car no newer then the 50s left unfinished with old school speed equipment. I guess just part of a successful trend is that people who dont get it will try to replicate it and the people who do get it will just have to shake their heads and laugh a little.

I agree the term Rat-Rod may be overused but it probably won’t die, just like a Donk. I have a unfinished turd myself, however I don’t deem it a rat-rod just because it is flat black with some bolt-ons and shiny wheels.
I think the spirit of the Rat-rod or the rat-bike was that you never get completely finished with it. Your too busy concerned with making it faster that the aesthetics slide a little bit.

rat rod is the first to reveal manufactured hoaxes. Backyard cheap with important facts…simply happening, looks don’t matter. The rat rod that breaks land speed records looking like crap for example? Get it? There are misconceptions like the rambler you found, but rat rod really is a slap in auto makers idiocy..if its a real rat rod. I had one, looked like a beaten monmte carlo..mismatched heads ,a slapping caved in #1 rod journal..and even that only allowed oil to get pumped more than normal… worlds tallest gears, and 170 mph..Rat Rod.never judge it. In fact, who knows what that rambler has hidden..maybe a sleepy rat rod…

I like the “rat rod” look.
.
I also still like the “pro street look”, and
.
the present “pro touring” look.
.
.
Call them “trends” or whatever you like,
.
But these terms help us to identify a
.
specific look and specific traits that
.
a car would have…
.
.
The “rat rod” Rambler is cool.
.
I’d drive it.

I think you’re pretty much a fascist who needs to relax and let others have fun on their own terms.

Im not!! I love these cars. The flat black and red wheels adapts pretty well to most cars. Granted I wish people had a little more of an imagination, but the rat rod look is an image just like any other and they have there place.

Shiny cars are nice, but true gritty survivors (the true rat rods) are timeless and I hope they never go away.
