Paul Newman Runs Some Last Laps at LimeRock
By John Coyle
Editor
In addition to being a great actor and an incredibly generous philanthropist—all the proceeds from his Newman’s own products go to charity—Paul Newman is also a talented race driver. Unfortunately, 18 months ago, he was diagnosed with terminal cancer, and apparently, he doesn’t have much time left. But that didn’t stop him from hitting the track at LimeRock last week in his GT1 Corvette! Check out a few pics of his #80 car on the circuit after the jump, and head over to the Early911Registry forums for some great stories about a real class act.

Paul Newman is a legend for his work in movies, and he’s a stud for all his work outside of movies

I’m glad Paul Newman was able to get in a final lap before his untimely death. I say untimely, although he was 83, I was hoping he would live forever. The world needs more people like him. Paul, you will be missed.

I remember when he won the 24 Hours of Daytona, and he was asked how he felt about winning. He replied “I’m just pleased to have a pulse.” Classy and funny guy, a sad thing that he afflicted with cancer.

Not only a superlative actor, but he seems like a guy who really inspires people from all walks of life. I wish I’d get a chance to meet the man, but it’s worth knowing that people like that exist, even if we never cross paths.

Newman was very, very good race car driver. I remember Newman and Walter Payton racing TransAm.
What a great time for sports car racing.
