Honda Civic Si Coupe vs. Dodge Challenger SE: Which Would You Choose?
By Rob
Editor-in-Chief
Ok, so I decided to mix things up a bit this week. These cars are priced pretty close (the Honda is just over $21k, the Dodge just under $22k). They have a similar horsepower to weight ratios (the Civic weighs 2882 pounds and its 2 liter four banger packs 197 hp, while the Challenger is a porkier 3819 pounds and its 3.5 liter V6 delivers 250hp). Both have semi-useful back seats. The Challenger SE is only available with an automatic, while the Civic Si Coupe comes standard with a slick six speed. The Challenger gets 17/24 mpg city/highway while the Civic gets 21/29 mpg city/highway. So for this week’s Showrooms Showdown it’s import vs domestic, FWD vs RWD. Which would you choose?

Yea, that’s fine. But who will run out of gas first and need to pay the “Arabs” that you hate so much your hard earned money over and over again at the pump? Also, let’s see in 15 years which car is still running without 3 time rebuild of the engine.

No contest. None whatsoever. You can keep your damn Jap-made plastic hunks of shit. If I’m going to by a contemporary plastic hunk of shit, I’ll buy it American-made!

If you’re acctually into muscle cars the challanger is a piece of shit. I’d much rather go with the civic, and if you’re that into muscle cars how can you compare the new challanger against the older classy muscle cars?

The two cars are totally different I wanna get a civic for the performance, and reliablilty. I’m a huge muscle car fan but I’m big on performance too… But damn now-a-days if you go 50km over the speed limit they’ll fucking take your car away. Sadly it’sjust not worth it anymore, not like the good old days when you caould race on the streets. So for me it’s looks over perforemance, and that will have to be te Challenger, sorry honda I jut value my licence.

My first Civic I put over 200,000 miles on and it still ran and looked great when I sold it. I now have another Civic Coupe with 125,000 miles and it is like new. Hondas are reliable and they last. That is why they are my first choice.

Actually…the Japanese cars that we buy in the states are made in the states. In fact, many imports are actually more American than American cars, which have much of their work done in Mexico. So really, if you want to send your money to another country, buy American.
The Civic Si outperforms the Challenger SE in just about every way. Acceleration, fuel economy, handling, etc. The Challenger’s interior has lots of cheap materials, and doesn’t match up well with the retro exterior. The only thing the Challenger SE has going for it is the exterior design, and only if you like the retro look.
Personally, given a choice between a car that looks good and one that performs, I’ll take performance any day.

If you want to send your money to another country buy a Jap car.
I’m sure your kids wont need a job. The challenger a true car not a subcompact car.

Man is kind of funny, people that like american cars always live in trailer parks and cant really afford to tuned a car, therefore they spend money on a gas dragger to find out that they always get beat by 4 cylinder tuners. Fucking dumb asses, come on look in the news, chvy just recalled thousands of cars, thats right go ahead and get a car that will lose its value when u drive off the lot, i will keep getting girls on my s2k when you are asking for a ride becuase ur shit broke down. Challenger looks much nicer, but drivability wise i like manual so civic would be the choice, but if the challenger came manual id take that over the civic.

This is retarted. Ok putting the best honda has (which isnt even that great) versus the base car challenger. Thats like having thats like taking the a decent track runner and an amazing track runner, shooting the faster one in the legs and expecting them to do just as well. Of course the top of the line civic Si might be a bit faster then the bottom of the barrel challenger which still kills the civic in looks cuz at the end of the day, its still a honda civic
Quin
Aug 30, 2008 at 1:15 am
I don’t care how much money I save at the pump, I’d take a Challenger over a Civic any day. You can fix up a Civic so it’s a decent tuner or ricer but in the end your’re still stuck with a economy car. The Challenger is pure muscle.

okay i am not a ricer fan and never will be.. i am a dodge fan all the way.. but as far as i am concerned if you are buying the challenger u should not be buying the 6 cylinder anyway..I dont think dodge should of even made the 6.. umm hello hemi 8 cylinder now every poor joe schmo is gonna want one like the mee too mustangs…i got a mustang.. oh yeah me too too many out there

Yeah, I think all you rice-fan idiots should remember the article about the million mile chevy? it was just last week remember, little hamster lovers? I Dont know of any HONDA that has ever made it to a million miles. Because THEY DONT. American vehicles all the way. They are the better made vehicles AND THEY last longer.

The guy 3 comments below me is exactly right!!! the new cobalt ss can do 0-60 in 5.7s killing the challenger and civic si. you can get it for under $25 grand. it may not be as good looking as the challenger or as reputable as the civic. American, sporty and tuner-esque. 2 me the cobalt is the best of both worlds.

Aug 29, 2008 at 7:18 pm
hey thats true people always say imports last long but I almost never see any classic imports still on the streets..I see alot of classic American cars..you know the ones built out of steel..if I do see an late 80s cressida or something they mostly look like crap anyway. No one would even spend any money to restore that sh*T..but people would spend thousands to restore an old muscle car because of its style and grace. Oh and for the v6 potential I know a guy with a 91 camaro RS with a v8 with 90k with no mods but a homemade turbo set up running 12.1 in the quarter look it up hes on the internet. So bad ass challenger it is!
John
Aug 29, 2008 at 7:09 pm
Right now the only thing the challenger and civic have in common is price that is what this comparison is about. Comparing the R/T challenger to the civic would take the challenger completely out of the price range of the civic. On a different note here are the performance stats for the civic ex (quoted from car and driver). O
Base Price: $15,605
0-to-60-mph time: 7.7 sec
Quarter-mile time: 16.1 sec @ 87 mph
Ouch that hurts less than 16k and similar performance to the challenger. Face it the civic is better…
Jebus103
Aug 29, 2008 at 6:51 pm
How can you compare the honda civic SI coupe which is the faster model of the civic to the basic slower model of the dodge challenger?? The Challenger was built to have a big thundering V8 like the 5.7L hemi and thats just whats inside the Challenger R/T. So lets take the civic SI coupe against the Challenger R/T not the SRT-8 (because that would be ludicrously unfair with the 6.1L) and then compare and the only loss for the challenger would be the price. Case closed
chris
Aug 29, 2008 at 6:35 pm
to hard to choose. I personally would want the SI. cuz I love hondas. but the challanger is a rwd which is badass. so cool drifting damn awesome. wow idk six speed or rwd its a toss up give me 23k and ill be the judge.

Definitely the Civic SI. The Challenger has no real advantage over the Civic except for its looks.

Aug 29, 2008 at 5:01 pm
This is a hard one for me. The Civic would be more fun to drive stock. The Challenger is better looking, but its a v6 automatic. I like both tuners and muscle cars. The Challenger in its base form is not quite a muscle car and I am not much of a Chrylser fan. I like the STR8s. If the car has to stay stock I would choose the Civic. The must have upgrades for the Challenger would be a Hemi, Manual trans, suspension and big brakes. Which you might as well buy a SRT8.
John
Aug 29, 2008 at 4:52 pm
I think the muscle car guys are missing the point. On paper the civic is a better car period. It is faster, lighter, more fuel efficient, more reliable (statistically), and cheaper. So why would you buy the challenger… looks? In my opinion the challenger does look better but that’s still like 10 points to 1. My question to the muscle car guys is why the heck would you still buy the challenger? The only solution I could come up with is that you have a disease. Like alcoholism or ADD. That is the only way I could comprehend someone being able to ignore all facts and logic and still buy the challenger…
Dustin
Aug 29, 2008 at 4:35 pm
Interesting comparison. 0-60 in 8.1 for the Challenger. 7.2 second 0-60 for the SI. Honda has an amazing reputation for their company. Dodge not so much. For all you Import fans and all you Muscle fans, these are just the facts. Whether your screaming VTEC or disturbing the peace with american rumble, the debate will always rage.

I’d pick da challenger all the way. I hate tuners, i bet everyone that pick da civic would put a huge exhaust tip and a huge spoiler, and say dat da civic gained hp. Tuners suck, they should be illegal in the U.S. and ship them back to Japan. I drive a pontiac grand prix, and i smoke all da tuners. American Muscle baby….challenger!
John
Aug 29, 2008 at 2:14 pm
Civic all the way. The civic is a premium model whereas the challenger is a base model. The civic is significantly faster (according to edmunds 14.9 quarter vs 16.1), and handles better. In fact a 16.1 is pathetic. Why would you buy a fatter, slower, less equipped, more expensive car? Only a redneck would pick the challenger (“cause it looks cool”). I don’t hate domestics, just in this case picking the challenger makes no sense. I am going to laugh when chrysler goes under. (unless the gov’t bails them out) bunch of crap.

I can respect both ends of this contest, but I pick the Challenger.
Myself included in the Ricer Revolution, the challengers look awsome. I own a 2006 Civic, and it took about 8,000 for me to hit 289RWHP. Which is very impressive. I also had about 3,000 in tranny and Diff work done, to hold the power and off set the wider tires.
I havent researched the challenger or anything, but for shear looks I go Challenger.

Aug 29, 2008 at 1:09 pm
The Charger would be a lot more fun… if it was a manual. But I’d have to go with the Civic, a muscle car with an auto transmission just doesn’t work for me.

If your going for looks and style the Challenger. If your going for MPG the civic, but I Personally would go for the Challenger. I like the Look, and the aftermarket world for it is going to be alot stronger
Plus who really wants to ride in an import, not even my girl would buy a honda. She bought a new GTO when they came out.

Let’s just put this to rest. Both are good cars, aimed at a completely different demographic. To try to compare them is pointless, it brings out the the idiots and posers against the rationalists and practicalists. Can you guess which car I vote for? The Civic is the rational choice, the Challenger is the choice if you think with your penis.

Ok for people to say hondas are crap are slow you go drive around and tell me how many hondas that are still puching that were built in the 80′s and early 90′s alot….also for the people that are saying the challenger se 250hp is good for a v6 do you really know how many cars they are that a priced the same that have mare hp(cobalt ss and hhr ss) look it up i like cars with big rims and i dont hate on tuners i give them much respect because you never know what thay have under the hood and u but i would pic the challenger because im tall

Wow!!!!!!!! I never thought it would come down to this….I own a 91′ civic SI and I love my ride but on the other hand me and my Dad are rebuild Challengers he has 4 more left and weve had 6 total since I was 12. My upsession is challengers though but considering that the power to weight is close and the price is close I would most defintely have to say that SEXY @$$ Challeger even if its a A/T V6.
Matt
Aug 29, 2008 at 10:06 am
Wow… there are really a lot of ignorant people in here…
There are lots of things to consider when choosing a car. For some people, the better gas mileage alone is enough to make them choose the civic, or even the fact that it’s cranking out just under 200 horsepower out of a tiny 2.0L engine, or maybe even the fact that it has the 6spd manual tranny which would be far more fun to drive.
The challenger on the other hand is a much sexier design, a very good meshing of both old and new, and yes, 250hp is pretty damn nice coming from a stock 6 cylinder engine. The challenger also has a pretty nice interior to go along with the 20″ wheels and big old brembo brakes.
Both cars have their ups and downs. Personally I wouldn’t choose either car because I find the civic to be ugly and I don’t believe in V6 muscle cars. If you are going to drive a muscle car, make it a V8 so it actually has some muscle. If this were comparing the 6.1L V8 challenger I wouldn’t even think twice about grabbing the challenger instead of the civic.

Aug 29, 2008 at 5:40 am
“leatricers!” you’re just being ignorant. a 4 cylinder civic si is pushing almost 200 hp. just get some more upgrades you’ll be able to get over 250hp easy. plus you have to consider the weight/hp ratio. civics will easily put up good race against a challenger. i don’t get why you people are hating on the civics don’t hate on the tuner cars just because they can beat your v6-v8 cars with only 4 cylinders.

Not a very good versus, but out of the two I would without a doubt choose the challenger. less of them around. more power. way sexier looking car. rwd. nicer interior. and what would you rather tell people, yea I drive the little wannabe tuner car civic, or I drive a muscle car remake challenger. don’t get me wrong tuner cars are great and fun, but the challenger is a much bigger dog. definately cooler
Don
Aug 29, 2008 at 2:38 am
I would choose the Challenger, just because I’m an old school type of guy. (one with a Saturn…but I digress) So the Civic is out, and the Challenger joins my imaginary Shelby 500 parked in the garage. Oh, the Challenger has only the V6? Yeah no matter. Thats my daily driver…The Hemi Challenger SRT8 sits next to the Shelby, and there is a spot reserved for the Camaro…Yes the Pony Car Wars in my garage…
Yes this is only a dream…………….

Aug 29, 2008 at 2:27 am
that challenger is pretty impressive a v6 starting off with 250 hp is pretty good..a mild turbo or mild supercharger or maybe some smaller engine mods would push it to 300+ hp land and its a rwd platform pretty impressive..that civic would take a whole lot of God for that small engine to even see those numbers with the same budge the challenger would have

the challenger all the way civic is garbage for real no props I rather see a turbo american v6 (like buick turbo) that a turbo anything in an import..about american cars not lasting I seen thousands and thousands of classic cars still on the street from chevys to mopars I hardly see any of those sh*tty imports from the 70s or 80s still driving around.

How would the civic be better in the winters? The plastic wouldn’t corrode from the road salt? It has low profile tires, lo profile tires suck in the snow and ice, no traction at all.

Definatly the Challenger, you people gotta admit that thing looks real nice. But ide have to get the V8
D
Aug 29, 2008 at 12:55 am
coming from a 350Z driver I’d choose the civic. I dont care about gas, but the Civic would get better gas, better resale value, better for these colorado winters. The challenger to me doesnt have potential for anything due to the lack of power for the V6 model. It does look better, but thats all about it has in my eyes.

I would pick the challenger. I like honda civics (especially the si’s) but the challenger has what Borat likes to call a “p***y magnet” I know this is a bad reason to choose a car, but the challenger just looks way more badass. The auto transmission is a downer, but I could only be tempted away by the Civic Si Mugen.

In regards to practicality I’d take the Honda. And driving Prelude has nothing to do with it. I just think it would make a better daily driver, it’s a bit cheaper, and most importanly more fuel efficiant.I don’t know where you all live $4 a gal is got damn rediculous.

That is completely FALSE and your shitty little 4 banger would never outrun a Mustang GT. Grow up and go back to school you obviously know nothing.

I agree. the RWD challenger. Itll kick the shit out of that honda. Hondas are cheap and dont last for shit. HONDA TYPE R boy. I see hondas broke down on the road all the time. only vehicles i see broke down are imports. I just saw one today. American cars last longer and THATS A FACT. I dont know where u people got your info because imports DO NOT last longer. They are cheap plastic pieces of shit and a waste of money. I think almost everyone on here agrees the challenger.

my vote for the challenger was not based on which I would be taking to the track. but as a daily driver the challenger se would be a well rounded car with loads of style. (classic looks, hood scoops, front air dam…) and I’m a big guy and I’ve seen the challenger in person (with Hemi) and they are big.

Man i cant beleive that people really like that piece of junk Challenger. Come on now, you drive that thing off the lot and its now worth as much as a coke can. The Civic is much better on every term. All American cars are just stupid, spend all the money on them so they can break down and spend more. I drive an s2000 and i have beat just about any american car i have raced to date, some names- srt8,srt4,mustang GT,sulstice gxp,g6 gxp, all got smoked by my 4 cilinder s2k. The only car that came close and still got beat by a car 1/2 was the srt8, the rest kissed my tail lights. Why would you spend money on a lemon. So i vote on the si for sure. You all red necks please just keep driving your trucks…. thanks

i would go challenger because it is RWD, it has more potential as a drag car, but then again is it a V6 and a muscle car just isnt a muscle car with out a V8.
so i vote
.
challenger, only because it is RWD, and a more practical car, big trunk, better for winter (weight and no low profile tires), more interior space, ect…

it doesnt matter its like participating in the special olympics either way your still retarded, the challenger is for the old folks having a mid life crisis and the honda is for people who cant figure out what a real sports car is in my opinion neither are worth it if you want good gas millage buy a tdi if you want a real performance car dont go for either

“NOT A GOO COMPARISON”
Give us the “Real Deal” Challenger Vs’ the “Real Deal” Civic.
Based on looks?, “Challenger is the better of the two”.
The Civic looks like something my car might have a one night stand with.
“Dam Womanizer”
I’d never buy a bias model.
If you do, your a Smuck/sucker/chump/poser/wanta B/wish you could.
a 4cl, V6 Mustang is a PINTO.
a V6 Challenger is just a nice “Waist of time”
Auto Manufacturer’s know that you show off the best, “create demand” offer a “BUDGET” model.

I can’t believe the only reason any of these little tuner kids are turning the Challenger down is because of the fact that it isn’t available in Standard [yet].
It takes more than a Standard tranny to make your car worth racing, of course you don’t know that because you believe a fully customized ride is something you’ve thrown a spoiler and muffler tip on. One day you will grow up, stop playing with your little Honda Hot Wheels and realize what REAL cars are.
Yes the Challenger has a V6, but it puts out decent power. Yes the Challenger is heavy, but weight reductions are the cheapest upgrade to perform, just start pulling stuff off the ride. If you really want a rod then you don’t need the interior door panels, stereo system, AC unitry, all of that can go. That will save you massive amounts of poundage.
The Challenger is just better. Anybody that knows ANYTHING about cars can see that a Dodge Challenger [even if it's a V6] is a great car, it looks even BETTER when compared to a Honda Civic.
Dallas61

Why do people assume that because the civic’s FWD it will be better in the snow. It has low profile tires. It makes me wonder if they have ever driven a car with low profile tires in the snow, probably not because they don’t go anywhere. The challenger you could at least put snow tires on, and it’s heavy which would also help in the snow. People really need to stop running their mouths about things they don’t know much about. And everyone saying that if it doesn’t have a manual transmission it’s a woman’s car, that’s pretty funny too. It doesn’t matter the engine size or horsepower, if it has an automatic it’s a woman’s car. I get a kick out of how dumb import guys are.

I’d go with the Civic. The recreation of the past is neat ‘n all, but it’s the first year of a new design. Something is BOUND to come up as a problem re: the Chalenger. (Plus – Dodge and I – we’re not close friends due to an Intrepid from Hell). Plus – even if the ratios etc are similar, I’m thinking that the Civic will have better handling.

Aug 28, 2008 at 5:14 pm
given the choice, I would go with the honda. sounds crazy i know, but if you get a challenger, camaro, mustang, etc. IT HAS TO BE A V8. If not then what is the point. The challenger is still an awesome looking car, but the 7.1 hemi is a beast in comparison. there can be a lot said for honda’s engineering as far as power to weight ratio goes. tough choice

better gas, better driving experience…just all around would be a better car to buy….and not too many things u can do with a 3800 pound car with a V6 in it,unless u wanna blow big money.

Maybe…MAYBE, if the Challenger came with a 5 or 6 speed manual, I’d consider it. But has anyone driven that Civic Si? With the huge tach gauge revvin all the way up to 8K RPM’s and the short-throw six-speed gear box, the Civic Si wins hands down! It’s a drivers care with a ton of feedback and it’s very fun to drive while maintaining its comfortable everyday ride. Perhaps a better comparison would be the V6 Challenger with a V6 Mustang, where I’d take the Mustang w/ a stick!

while I love the look of the new challenger, I think they missed the boat , by building one. Had it been a foot smaller all around and 600 pounds lighter, id of left a trail of drool on the way to the dealership to order even a 6 cyl one…The civic doesn’t quite satisfy the carnal hot rod desires, but its still a fun, quick car that I wouldn’t regret purchasing after the novelty wore off.. my choice, Civic SI…

All these people are on here bitching about the Automatic Tranny. What’s the big deal? Swap it out for a standard if it bugs you that much! Besides, the standard transimission WILL be coming out soon. They just set the auto out first because let’s face it, they sell!
A true car enthusiast would never pick a Honda Civic over a Challenger. 1.) Civic’s are crap, they may as well be prizes in cereal boxes 2.) The Civic will NOT retain value like the Challenger will, in 20 years who the HELL is going to search the country for their long lost dream car the HONDA CIVIC!? 3.) The Civic is FWD 4-banger, not anything to be proud of.
Challenger without a doubt, I don’t get how anybody could possibly take the Civic hands-up.

Once again Dodge killed it with automatic transmission first the Charger now this whats going on. Its whatever I love American muscle and I hate civics even if they are fuel savers which that is what every one is demanding for gas savers. For a person that cares about only about $$$ on gas prices will go for the civic. Any one who is old school muscle fan loves domestics and power and cares less about $$$ on gas the challenger. The Challenger wins hands down forget about gas prices go for that muscle sound engine then over a weed wacker sounding engine any day.

The Civic will outhandle the challenger (despite it’s FWD layout), go further on a tank of gas, let you shift your own gears, and probably be more reliable. On the other hand, you’ll look like a spiked haired, Civic-driving douche tooling around in an Si.
That’s much worse than being caught with a muscle car with no muscle. Plus, last I checked V6s could be turbo’d and supercharged just as well as the 4-banger. The Challenger is definitely cooler looking, and has more performance potential.

Better fuel economy (more important now than ever)
Better resale value
Reliability
Huge selection of high performance parts
Solid handling
Better styling (In my opinion)
Lower price, even when fully loaded
