Insanely Rare Saleen Ranger On eBay
By Jen Dunnaway
Editor
Saleen developed a Ford Ranger for SCCA truck racing in the 80’s, and the rules stated that in order for it to be legal, an equivalent model had to be made available for public purchase. So 24 civilian-issue Rangers were rolled out in ‘88, along with the tiny handful of competition models built between 1987 and 1990. Here’s one of them, in virtually mint condition, on eBay. The non-competition version has a 2.9L V6 and a five-speed, plus some pretty burly suspension upgrades and a bodykit. I dig the totally-80’s striped velour interior. But the real kicker is seeing the Saleen lettering on the humble Ranger pickup. Check out the auction!

No one appreciates rareness, creativity, or anything else anymore.
FORD DIDN’T BUILD IT IDIOTS! It says Saleen. A Ford sudsidary. Hell back then Saleen may have been it’s own company. This was made for SCCA which required production models! Roush Mustangs are made by Roush not Ford. And hell back then they shipped semi complete trucks to Saleen to be finished. Just like the Syclone and Typhoons which were shipped to PAS were they were completed.

It looks like he did an Econoline front end conversion.

Apparently these people do not understand the rarity of this truck or the history behind it. Try to find another vehicle that is 1 of 24 for this cheap. $18,000 is more than I can personally afford for the time being but if I were able to buy it I would be on eBay right now giving the owner my address to ship it to.
Everyone is complaining about the rims, CHANGE THEM! I personally would not because this truck is in mint condition therefore worth more money. I think it’s a very clean truck and has a very unique look. I do not find it ugly in any way, but most of these people bashing it find Honda Civics appealing so that just throws their opinions straight to the garbage.

For the sheer Nostalgic nature of the truck, I’d say the 18K being asked for ain’t unreasonable. I mean, for a “classic” automobile with a racing heritage and such a small number of production models, I’d say it’s well worth it to the collector!

I am a Ford Ranger owner myself, mine is a 2000 with a 3.0L Flex Fuel V6, granted it aint the fastest Ranger or best in class of looks, but this “Saleen” Ranger was slapped with the ugly stick a few too many times! I recently bought an ‘84 Ford Ranger for a restoration project and seeing this Ranger here…makes me want to sell it! I have never been more ashamed of Ford before seeing this truck turned “wanna be muscle car”. AND FOR $18K!? Holy crap! You couldn’t PAY ME $18K to drive that!

I’ve never understood the continued success of Saleen. Their modifications are usually extremely overpriced and their appearance customizations are almost always lacking in class.

Remember, Lamborghini made tractors, too.

The problem with this is, no matter HOW cool or rare it truly may be, it looks like the typical poseur sticking an “R” emblem on his mom’s accord. (or seen recently on miata.net, someone who put Mercedes emblems all over his white 2006 and has his girlfriend believing it’s really a Benz.)

there is no car that is insanely rare, the minimum number for a car is one, this is one of 24!
still, i do like the idea of a truck made by a supercar manufacturer and i doubt lamborghini’s going there again!

This thing is stone ugly, the actual racing truck in the brochures looks so much better.
