Cool Cars, Low Bucks

By David Wallens

Some people believe that it takes big bucks to get involved with motorsports. Horse hockey! Our $2008 Challenge is just around the corner, where we prove that it doesn’t take big bucks to build neat cars. Entrants are limited to a budget cap of $2008, and their creations face an interesting triathlon: autocross competition, drag racing and concours judging.

Jon Haas showed up with this ‘49 Chevy last year and turned lots of heads. Underneath the patina shell lies a Caprice cop car chassis. He built the entire rig for $1700. Will something even cooler show up this year? Who knows, but we still have a few slots open for the Oct. 2-4 event. If you think that you have the neatest low-buck ride, why not throw your hat into in the ring? Two more cool rides from last year’s event after the jump, and you can get the full details at Grassroots Motorsports.

$2008 Challenge

Last year, this Vette blew away the competition–literary! It features a sucker mechanism for the ultimate round-holding grip. And like everything else at the event, it was built for less than 2000 bones.

Think that it takes big bucks to build a turbo Miata? Not so.

Ooh btw I love the concept of the race.
I just hope that there would be something
like that in my area.

How could someone have a corvette for under 2008$?
Are the entrants allowed to “add” 2008$ to a ride
they already own, or the guy just have been freaking
lucky to have the car given to him?

I always love to see what people are able to come up with. Such a cool competition. Seriously loving that Chevy Coupe.
