Tokyo Drift Mustang Shows Up On eBay

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

If you got here from the newsletter, you’re probably looking for this story: what car did you drive in high school?

There’s more ‘68 Mustangs on eBay than you can shake a stick at, but this one purports to be the Nissan-powered pony used in Tokyo Drift, the third installment in The Fast and the Furious. You’ll recall that it’s running a turbocharged straight-six from a Skyline GTR, and the seller claims the car’s got about $100K in mods altogether. The hilarious thing about the auction is that the seller isn’t allowed to name the movie in which the car appeared—he’s "under contract" not to name the mysterious film, and we’re left scratching our heads over whether it’s Tokyo Drift or any one of all those other movies featuring Nissan-powered Mustangs. Also interestingly, the seller says that with the turbo’d six, the ‘Stang is positively sedate, "rather than the beast that the big V-8 cars sometimes become." Hmmm. The auction is climbing up over $28K with the reserve not met. Check it out!

Just what we need, a Nissan powered ‘tang. What’s next a Morris Minor with a super-charged Audi engine ?

The car is likely a 67, the differences were the side “c” scoops which were louvered in 67 and smooth in 68, 67’s did not have side marker lights, which became federally mandated on all 1968 model year vehicles and therefore present on 68 Mustangs, and 67’s had a 3-spoke steering wheel with large center pad, while the 68’s had a horizontal bar style with a horn ring. The other major difference is that 67’s had a horzontal bar across the grille while 68’s had simply the pony and corral. This car has Shelby style side scoops so that cue is null and void, same thing goes for the steering wheel and grille. That leaves the remaining cue the fact that this car does not have the side marker lights, unless of course they were shaved for a cleaner look. So, in the end, it could still be a 68.

As for the movie, the Silvia that the engine was removed from was a highly modified drift car owned by Hahn, which Shawn wrecks in his first foray into drifting. After DK and his crew attack Hahn’s shop and Hahn is killed, the cops seize everything except the wrecked Silvia out back. Shawn and his crew then grab Shawn’s dad’s Mustang and the RB26 Skyline motor to create the ultimate drift car for Shawn’s final loser-leaves-town mountain race against DK.

I am a hardcore Mustang enthusiast and when I first heard of this car being built before the movie came out, I thought it was blasphemy. However, in the context of the movie, I thought it made perfect sense considering small or big block V8 parts probably arent exactly plentiful in Tokyo, and they had a donor car to do the swap.

I probably wouldnt attempt this swap myself unless I had a ton of support from people who know both cars well. Though of course people drop fuel injected 5.0 Mustang engines into the classics all the time, so I can’t see the principle being tremendously different.

Does no one notice “The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift” sticker on the front windsheild. Clearly it’s the movie car. The studio doesn’t care if it’s the right engine name or not, they will name it what ever they want. NO ONE GIVES A S*** ABOUT THE REAL SPECS IN THE MOVIE.

who cares whats its got for stickers !! my 89 chevy z24 has a 427 sticker on it dont mean its has it dumbasses !! for the record i dont really have that sticker on my car..it has a vaginatarian sticker really if you must know? dont mean its veggys either lol.. anyways back to the issue, its a mustang for those who are fans of true AMERICAN muscle an i say that with much agression, its one of the most recognized AMERICAN, nostalgic, made history 10fold, reinventing automobiles on earth fuck the ricers an all they stand for AMERICAN muscle gets built an driven, stored away ricers get driven an junked. im a ford first an chevy 2nd fan a bad ride beats a good walk i say .whoever inbreeded this car should be never be around me breathing my air ,, i am insulted, my father didnt work in auto industry (ford)for over 45 years for this crap bunch of bs

yeah that was an RB pulled from that S15 not an SR20. The S15 they had in the movie i think was someones shop car so it already had a RB26 in it and not a SR20

Gidzirra

Silvia S15 does not come with a RB26DETT people they have a SR20DET. Where are my true import fans?? All these ramblings are just crazy!

Sep 6, 2008 at 2:57 am

It could be a 68 mustang and titled as such with a 67 hood on it. I mean that IS the ONLY difference between 67 and 68

Anonymous
Sep 6, 2008 at 2:51 am

Not completely BS I have seen Silvias with RB swaps in em. So it is feasible to have pulled an RB26DETT from an S15. I personally am a detroit muscle guy, but this car gets mad points for creativity.

Ok, Toyko Drift mustang was a 67 not a 68. EBay add doesn’t state the movies name.

just out of curiosity didnt the movie car have a sr20det in it???? since it came out of hans s15…… either this is a major movie flaw or this car is bs. take it or leave it but somthin dosent add up

Sep 5, 2008 at 7:39 pm

God damn, the whole movie was fictional and the facts were jacked because MOST people out there have no idea what a skyline is much less how many turbos it has. Although it might be fun to stick a sick engine into a sick car but atleast tell the truth I say. Personally I would of preffered a 62 Camaro with a 20B. Shit I would drive arround without a hood just to show off the ridiculousness of the transplant. BTW Who has the money for this crap! why would anyone really spend so much on a suposed “tokyo Drift” car? damn with that much moolah? you can get a freggin dope cuda or a 911 from a specialist for less than 100k or even a bit more, but you can actually sell it for the same ammount or more when you’re bored of it!

SomePeoplesKids
Sep 5, 2008 at 5:31 pm

Its just like the 20 ft long Batmobile from the Movies in the 90s. Warner Bros owns the rights to the car, so the few that are in the publics possession, can’t do jack with it except let it sit in their garage, per contract with WB.

As for everyone bitching about the engine in it, who the fuck cares?!? Its a movie car. That was part of the movie. You don’t like it, buy the car and pull the motor out. Otherwise, STFU!

Rob
Sep 5, 2008 at 5:18 pm

It’s too bad, old American cars aren’t getting any easier to find and to just waste them like this is really uncalled for, and it’s just a shame that that’s what this world has become. Of course it would be easy to put a nice 427 CJ in her, give the poor Mustang back some of its dignity.

Keith
Sep 5, 2008 at 3:33 pm

I don’t think it’s the sellers fault for not being able to name the movie, he might not actually be able to. that doesn’t mean he is witholding the movie name because he wants to. I don’t see where he’s stupid for having a picture with the window sticker, maybe it’s his way around the contract

Anonymous
Sep 5, 2008 at 2:32 pm

how stupid can this guy be???just cause “i can not name the movie or studio”???? the banner is on the window. and the worse part is the motor in an american classic. wtf, for the movie ok but for real???

Sep 5, 2008 at 2:09 pm

Oh one more thing I noticed the location is Burbank where U grew up. The guy who built this eninge (I wont name names) I guess they couldn’t even get this thing tuned right and had to hack alot of componets to get the car to actually drive. This is just what ive heard through the studio and car guys I know in Burbank its really a junk car your better off if you must have a stang with a rb26 in it just build one yourself or hire a pro to do it.

rompn4x
Sep 5, 2008 at 2:04 pm

And… unlike about 98% of people on here I have actually built an engine putting over 550hp out… well two of them to date.

rompn4x
Sep 5, 2008 at 2:02 pm

You guys saying that the stang is better with a nissan engine are full of shit. This car would of smashed everything with a stroked and turbo’ed 331 small block. Make an easy 600hp all day on pump gas and would not have to rev to 10,000rpm to do it. And don’t run your mouth saying “yeah right” cause the truth is its easier, cheaper and contrary to what people think an aluminum head small block ford engine weighs less then some of those japanese boat anchor engines.

bobbo
Sep 5, 2008 at 1:00 pm

its defo not the real on as loads of you have said its a rb26 skyline engine not the sr20 silva engine and how could it have done 500 miles? fucking retards lol

Matt
Sep 5, 2008 at 12:24 pm

If you watch the bonus features, they say that the cars that actually drifted had V-8’s in them. Also, HC, in the movie, when they popped the hood of the Silvia it did have the RB26 and not the SR20. As for that 440 6-cylinder, they did say it had “4 inch pistons” (Lil Bow Wow when they race the Silvia against the 350Z.) The auction is at like 45,800 now, and I sure as hell wouldn’t buy it… I’d rather get an R32 or R33 GTR, and then use the rest of the money on parts, like Xaeta said.

Kinda strange that they used an RB26 for the Mustang when the donor motor in the movie was actually supposed to be out of a Silvia (as in SR20, not RB26). Those movie people need to get their details straightened out.

Sep 4, 2008 at 9:44 pm

I wonder how much the seller paid for it from Volo Auto Museum in IL? They sell quite a few movie cars there. The Monte Carlo from the beginning of Tokyo Drift is for sale right now there. Also both Eclipses from 1 and 2 are for sale there.

rob

Anonymous
Sep 4, 2008 at 6:26 pm

i wonder if it actually is any good with that tiny little motor. i mean, the skyline is probably a billion times lighter than the stang. idk if you could have a Japanese straight six in a stang, and call it an american muscle car…. idk, but i bet if a skyline with the same engine was pitted against it, it would totally own it.

mike
Sep 4, 2008 at 6:11 pm

yo don this could be the real car because of the fact the make four models of the car for the movies i would buy because ford is shit on wheels and a nissan engine made it a whole lot better

Don
Sep 4, 2008 at 6:08 pm

Okay, I checked the auction again and I am wrong about the issue of a CoA. Per the auction: “The winning bidder will be required to sign a release of liability and sign an agreement not to advertise the name of the movie or to name the studio should the car be resold. A certificate of authentication will be provided.”

So, it’s basically “buy this car for what it is but don’t publically announce to anyone what it is”?

GMS
Sep 4, 2008 at 5:54 pm

Am I right in saying that both Ford and Nissan Guys thing this car is totally STUPID.

Don
Sep 4, 2008 at 4:54 pm

The seller of the car recently sold off two Corvettes and listed himself as a dealer, then claims to be a private seller for the ‘Stang. I agree that the seller is contradicting himself to claim that contractually he can’t name the movie, but can openly display the movie name attached to the car. I’m also having trouble seeing where $100,000 could have (or would have) been spent on mods for a film promo car that wasn’t “used in racing or stunt scenes”, but driven only 200 miles.

The seller offers no indication of a Certificate of Authenticity or other proof the car is what it is claimed to be. To me, this is just a very nice clone of the movie car.

Trust me, I know the difference between a replica and the real thing. Not everyone else openly admits to it.

Sep 4, 2008 at 4:23 pm

think about it its like a $5000 car with a $10,000 rb26det (in the movie its a single turbo) motor and about $6500 worth of stickers on it

Xaeta
Sep 4, 2008 at 4:10 pm

meh, it would be worth a pretty penny to have the bragging rights to say “my car was in a movie.”

but I would stick to practicality and spend that $28,000 on a brand new R34 GTR instead, or buy an R32 for $10,000 and spend the last $18000 on the endless modifications available for the 32s

GTR Sounds to me like a typical dumb ass! This car was one of the high points of the whole movie. When I had my 01 V6 mustang, I wanted to do this kind of conversion so bad, I just didn’t have the money to do so. But to throw it in this classic 68 fastback made it so unique. I don’t think this will be bought by any collector though. But rather someone who will drive/drift the shit out of it!

I think it`s great what they did with the car genuise to put a japanese engine in a american mustang. Here in Puerto Rico we have done that too in the past but the opposite putting big V8 american engines in little japanese car`s. That means that in the world of cars and mechsnic we can do anything. Some people don`t know what they are saying.

it was an rb26 twin turbo but they had to drop one turbo because it woiuld not fit, got in the way of the suspension if i remeber correctly. it is no slouch either. it was in a few magazines with track times and smokey burnout pics around the time the movie came out.

its pretty simple to put an rb26 in an s15, other than a little wiring, you just have to flip the trans mount around.

Sep 2, 2008 at 8:33 pm

Jake,

It is an RB26dett…it has been converted to a single turbo. Also, the sr20det is a 4cyl not an inline 6 like the rb26 is. The RB26dett is out of a Skyline GT-R. In the movie, they supposedly took the rb26 out of an s15, which didn’t really happen. Apparently the S15 in the movie actually had an SR20DE (non turbo), so it’s possible that they used CG to fake that part.
