Adios, Vise Grips: Another American Icon To Take The Long Hike To China
By Jen Dunnaway
Editor
The Vise-Grips plant in DeWitt, Nebraska, which has assembled the locking pliers for the last 80 years, will be moving its operations to China. It strikes kind of a note with me because only yesterday I was discussing some ways to free up a frozen and rounded-off brake-line fitting with some people at the parts counter, and a local mechanic recommended the method of last resort: get some Vise-Grips on the fitting, "nuke ‘em" real tight, and just go for it. "Only make sure you’re using real ones, not that fake crap from China," he added. It turned out to be really good advice.
Vise-Grips employs around 300 people in a town with a population of 572—so over half the town got the bad news directly from the management yesterday. The pliers have been manufactured in Nebraska since 1924, when Danish immigrant and DeWitt blacksmith William Petersen obtained the patent for them. Read more at msnbc.

Vise grip was not a union job!!! The line workers took a cut in pay 3 years ago and most made around 13.00 an hour. Union had nothing to due with this company going over seas. China started producing parts for the vise grip a few years back and the nebraska plant would assemble them. The China parts were absolute junk and most of them had to be sent back and redone. They were figuring on saving 20 cents per wrench by sending it to China. The latest figures I heard now is they will be saving about 6 cents per wrench. That’s it 6 cents. If the next president starts taxing stuff higher for coming into this country there goes their few cents they were saving. I have talked to workers from the Nebraska plant they say that the wrenches produces in China are absolute crap.

Reminds me of those VW commercials. In the end they say “German Engineered” yet seem to leave out the whole “Made in Mexioco” thing.

@ tom…. u full of shit!!! the communist government in china can manipulate any product and specification to suit their best interest in spite of how it was once made and where it came from, u really think the chineese make superior products then the us???, ur opinion stinks u bastard. the children who make products in china couldn’t care less about the hard work that goes into it, they just want to make sure they bring home that $10 a day to their families so they can go play afterwards. a real product in a real plant in the us is far far superior than that of anyone else.so now people, are u ready to keep the republicans in office?, or are u ready for a change? do the right thing, put ur finger up to china, the republicans and special interests and lobbyist who don’t care for keeping job in this country and get with the obama program!!!!!…. to hell with a vice presidental candidate wearing a bathing suit while shooting off a gun, get real!

When your wondering why your grandchildren are on foodstamps and Social security and can’t find a job just remember about what you bought and where it was made and you’ll answer your own question. I’m not saying moving a company to china is a horrible thing but i’m suggesting that if you want american jobs then start buying american products.

“Don’t worry too much about this type of stuff”
The “Governments” got our back.
I’ve heard of some new legislation,
“Too all be very wherry”
It will soon be illegal to own and move a company out of the US.
An act of “Treason” Denouncing your Citizenship and allowing the Government to seize all assets, ($Money, Property), and charge you Criminally in military court.
“Wait they already can do that.”
Don’t worry Haliburton is immune, so is most of the company’s you love, “Walmart” “&”………….
There only here to seize your property.
“So keep living in your bubble, one day what you do will be illegal too.”
“I say that all and any “none OEM” modifications to vehicles is Criminal.”
Guess what, “it is already is for the most part.
“Check your local Laws.
Did you know that now any criminal violation leaves you open to FBI, and CIA investigation? (with no consideration of your Rites)
Be careful to what you say on the phone too. “It is now legal to Tap your phone for any reason.” (Oh you thought that went away)
Now what would you say if they brought in foreigners to manage civil unrest, like military Policing?
“Think they’ll care what you believe your Rites are?”
“As Citizens of this Nation we have the responsibility to own these issues, and change the ways of selfish Politicians and Corporations.”
“All I’m saying is think about it.”
(Say one more thing, anybody hear anything about whats going on in Georga? Last I heard reported “Battle ships” were on thier way there.)

people need to realize why they moved to china….cheaper labour meaning they save more money larger factories/more employees again at cheaper cost but to produce a larger quantity. its all about money now not quality so dont expect vise-grips to be the same or get better.

“Cheapening a product” and moving a product to China are not the same. By no means are all Made in USA products high quality. Labor and the related costs of labor are no insignificant part of a product’s cost. There are many Chinese companies that produce junk but when a big US company moves production to a country like China they move the technology and the manufacturing processes also. There they can make as good a product as in a high cost country but it costs the consumer a lot less. The company makes more profit and purchaser gets a better value for his money. Or think about this … if you can reduce the price of a product you can improve and add features to it that you wouldn’t want to pay extra for if it was produced in a high cost country like the USA. Tell me that the import cars have not caused the quality level and features of our made in the USA cars not to improve.
Let’s face it, the Chinese are not dumb people, they work as hard as or harder than any highly paid workers. A lot of us in the USA talk about what is owed to us. The Chinese still feel they have to earn it. I’m old enough to remember when people said don’t buy that Japanese junk!

It’s not the people who makes them. It’s the quality control and standards that are implemented that matters. I just hope that the company will keep following those quality control and standards strictly even after they moved to China. The Vise Grip name has been an icon as far as I can remember. What a name to waste if they don’t.

typical stereotypes…CHINA is the worlds largest manufacturor now is gonna be making Vise-Grips…big whoop…you probibly use numerous items made in China but oh no now that its a tool that was made in bullshit america being made in china thats bad news an the end of the world….seriously get over yourselves just be glad they didnt get rid of them period…and beside how can you fuck over a forged steel product? like seriously just because they suck at making cars wont mean theyll fuck up making a forged steel product. you people need to really think about the product an not the people making it. MADE IN USA has me turning away an looking for MADE IN CANADA least then i knowi have 100% grade A products.

Well that’s just great, the only vise grips worth shelling out the money for are gunna be turned into the standard cheap bullshit chinese crap that’s not worth a penny. Well, I hope they loose money for moving to China and producing cheaper tools. I know I’m not buying em unless they proudly say MADE IN USA. Pretty soon Craftsman will probably move to China, then what the fuck are we going to use?! In the words of Sheriff Buford T. Justice of Texas, “What the hell is the world coming to.”

Sep 6, 2008 at 2:46 am
When I saw this the first thing that came to mind was that it is a shame an American company that grew its success in the USA is firing all their employees which made them who they are today.
I have to say, the main reason why our country is in recession is because the stupid decisions Americans are making just to put a few extra bucks in their pockets.
Back in the old days when everything was great, you never heard of building things in china because WE ARE PROUD TO BE AMERICAN AND BUY AMERICAN!
We need to get our priorities straight and restore the USA to what it use to be, or even beyond what it use to be!

Seriousally?!
“Vise Grips” are the only ones that are even worth buying. Hell ive seen Mac ones mess up. My good old vise grips, have been heated blood red with a torch, smashed with a hammer, the jaws been stripped smooth and then the teeth been re-cut with a hacksaw, and they still stay together.
Huge mistake moving that to china.

I use these all the time at work! we use ‘em to hold up Taurus hoods with bad hydraulics.
-The next statement is unrelated to vise-grips-

I like how some foreign made tools hold up better than the shitty Craftsman ratchets I’m stuck with. “made in the USA” sure…

We wonder why Alfa Romeo and Pugeot won’t send their crap over here…
Base point as we are all stating: we all expect we don’t have to pay and for that, our country is becoming a lame piece of crap. Vise grips (the last tool in my box I considered all American), you let me down.

This country is going to crap because everyone wants to make $30 an hour doing very little work and still be able to buy a pair of shoes for $20.00. Sorry but that sort of economics does not work. The Vise-grips move is just another sign of this. This is the reality my friends, as much as you would like the American public to ‘buy American’ we just plain do not. I work in a town with factories, a GM plant and a steel mill. Union workers and union supporters abound. Do I see people spending $39.99 on a pair of vise grips that are made in America? No! I see people buying the cheap cast steel crap that is $19.99 for a set of 3 vise grip knock offs. I hate to see jobs lost like this, but we did it to ourselves.

I always check where it’s made before I buy it. I found out a long time ago that stuff made in china was cheap. It’s sad how much me and one of my buddies gets made fun of for looking to see if somethings made in America or not. I don’t see a problem for wanting a quality product.

In regard to your post: “and don’t want to pay the American workers the money they deserve.”
.
How much do they deserve?
.
Who sets that rate?
.
.
Do you really believe that American Manufacturers will continue
to put up with the continuing labor union demands?
.
If it was my company, I would see moving out of the US as an added bonus: pay less labor AND get rid of the self-serving entities that US Labor Unions have become.
.
There is NO WAY that anyone can convince me that some of the wages paid to some union workers is actually worth it.
.
Compare ANY of these jobs to a non-labor job. The difference is astounding.
.
And we wonder why companies are moving production out of the US…
.
We are seeing the end of US Manufacturing my friends.
.
You can thank your LOCAL XXXX for that!
.
.
Combine the union labor issue with the fact that the general population just wants inexpensive products, and does not care
where it was made…
.
Not everyone works for a union.
.
Not everyone looks for MADE IN THE USA labels.
.
The overwhelming majority I suspect DOES NOT.
.
.
We are in for interesting times my friends…

So are they just going to start stamping the name and logo of “Vise Grips” on the cheap, poorly made pliers already made in China? That would be the cheapest solution to “remaining competitive.”

Sep 5, 2008 at 2:25 pm
Hey, don’t just blame the owners/companies, its also the American people. Americans now these days are trained to buy something cheap and imported rather than paying more for something w/ better quality and “Made in America”.
The auto industry is another example. People these days don’t even consider the Big 3, rather buy an import w/o really knowing what that means. One example, for every 1 GM job, 7 other jobs are created. With Americans buying foreign cars, more and more $$ is sent overseas (especially to Japan).

We can all thank US Labor Unions for this.
.
Labor Unions were great when they were necessary…
.
That time has long since passed.
.
.
Unions are now self-serving entities.
.
.
When workers demand higher wages than
the average non-union sector, well,
the companies have a choice, don’t they.
.
Right now, that choice is to move to China.
.
.
The Labor Unions are FORCING US Companies
to move their production out of the country.
.
.
Sad. Very sad indeed.
.
But TRUE!

I’m at the point where I can’t avoid buying stuff “made in china” anymore.
Don’t worry though. Eventually when the U.S. becomes as economically desolate as India, maybe they’ll start exporting operations back to U.S. soil.
That’s globalization, a caravan of companies moving their production facilities like sheep, moving from time to time to where the grazing is richest, then moving on after exhausting the landscape.
…Not the way business should operate, but hey, who has the right to tell businesses how to operate?

I Like this quote from the article:
“Oden said employees were told that “to keep the Vise-Grip name competitive, they had to move to China.”
What?
I’m at the point now where it has “Made in China” on it, I won’t buy it. This is the problem with America, the owners of these plants want cheap labor and don’t want to pay the American workers the money they deserve.
