V6 Mustang Murders the Eclipse GS on CarDomain
By Rob Einaudi
Editor-in-Chief
Originally I was thinking of putting the V6 Eclipse against the V6 Mustang, but the V6 Eclipse is priced about the same as the Mustang GT. So even with a picture of a pink Mustang and the sportier Eclipse, the V6 Mustang still dominated this week’s showroom showdown by a 2 to 1 margin (and for those of you who think you can stuff the ballot, we can see when someone votes more than once). I thought that "John" summed this one up nicely:
I am definitely an import fan but in this case I would go with the Mustang. The V6 mustang has really good bang for the buck, and just because these are the lower end models of sports cars doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be sporty. The eclipse doesn’t even really represent the import community very well. It is huge and fat. When an import weighs as much as a mustang you are doing something wrong. Mustang for the win…
Stay tuned for another epic battle next week!

That is cool my comment got quoted on the main page. I was going to stop commenting on these showdowns because I felt like my solid arguments were falling on deaf ears. I was so frustrated with the Civic si vs. challenger competition, not because everyone didn’t agree with me but because nobody supported their argument. I lean towards imports because they tend to captivate the type of driving experience I like. But I look at theses competitions as if I had the money and could only buy one of these two cars which one I would buy. I like these battles I just wish people would support their arguments more.

The best way to sum this up is to use a quote I once saw on another forum:
“The Eclipse used to be a great car, until they started marketing it to 15 year old girls.”

“Heavy as a Mustang…” Hmm, methinks some misguided thinking is at work here. Remember, originally, the Mustang was, essentially, a stylized Falcon. People can complain about the weight of the new one all they want, but they forget about WHY the weight is there in the first place. 5-Star crash test ratings are owed to the safety and durability of the car. Remember the live axle? Also a weight-saver, but of course, SOMEONE will complain that it’s not IRS because it’s a Mustang- and they are an easy target. Finally, believe you me, Ford would love to sell you a stripped-down version of the car, no radio, heater, A/C, carpet, etc., but that would mean giving you still more things to complain about. “What, no air?” The bottom line is, there are those that love ‘em, and those that want ‘em, and typically the latter will complain until they actually get to experience that which is Mustang.
