Dodge To Run Challenger In NASCAR's Nationwide Series
By Jen Dunnaway
Editor
NASCAR’s second-string Nationwide Series won’t debut its own version of the Car of Tomorrow until at least 2010, but they officially began testing of their "new car" on Monday. And who’s the coolest prototype on the track? Dodge rolled up with this NASCARed-out Challenger, and I think it looks hot as hell. From the fenders back, it looks pretty much like any other stock car, because of the way the cars’ lines have to conform to specific body templates determined by NASCAR. But the sanctioning body has modified the rules governing the forward sheet metal, so it appears that the nationwide CoTs might actually be permitted to run real front clips instead of just stickers. See more pics of the Challenger testing at Richmond International Raceway below the jump, along with the other manufacturers’ offerings—the Malibu, the Fusion (though Ford will supposedly be running a Taurus), and the Camry.

They should do something like the old super birds but with out the big wing on the back. They should just use the nose off of it which would help dramatically with the front end wind resistance and the back end should be ok.

What most don’t think about is the fact that the new challenger front may not be a fast track car due to drag, they’ve tested it in a wind tunnel and no doubt get extra traction on the short tracks. What I would love to see is a mustang retro, the camaro retro, and a retro supra in this series. I wonder if toyota could ressurect the supra? I like the spoiler, not the wing.

No Dodges made the chase in the cup series this year…guess it won’t really matter what the car looks like next year, dodge is far behind the other makes in NASCAR

They can’t use that car on the track with that grill, I’m sorry but no team will get on the band wagon with a front end like that. With the way the cars are, that thing will be a brick wall trying to cut through the air. Regardless of how the cars look, they all still suck. This hasn’t been stock car racing since the 80′s. I find myself just watching 15-20mins of the race before I change the channel. My .02 cents.

Mopar what??? You are an ignorant individual…nuff said bout you…
I wonder if the inset fron facia is going to be a problem>> The Charger of the late 60′s compensated with the Daytona Charger 500 built with a Dodge Coronet front grill set flush with the body and raised the rear window flush with the sails….Well the NASCAR template takes care of the rear window, but that grill, while cool looking, makes me nervous…

I have to agree with john. but maybe there will be a cool long pointed front clip on a production car now, like a dodge daytona of old

NASCAR, who cares? They all look the same, you can’t as one commenter said, buy it on Monday. Yeah, try to find a V-8 powered RWD Camry on any lot, PULEEZE. When NASBORE returns to real steel bodies of actual cars that have been modified to within real racing rules, then perhaps I’ll start watching it again. Of course, I’ll probably be dead by then, as sponsorship and big bucks will no doubt continue to rule the day. SAD

NASCAR stock cars are just that- NASCAR cars. all of the cars have the same aerodynamics, engine, rear end, everything. the only thing different is the paint and numbers. this way no driver has an advantage just because of what they’re driving, they actually have to have skill and be able to take the car to its limits to win.

I want to see real stock cars racing. Stripped to the bone and reinforced like no other, maybe even modified engines to make it faster. But much more stock than they are now.

good question.
If there called STOCK cars, why do they run V8s in cars that don’t come equpped with one stock? Why DO they all look alike?

oh wow. that would be awesome, maybe even worth hooking up a tv. I stopped watching after the 80s monte ss looking styles and the real looking cars and even failures if front clips of real cars weren’t real enough…I hope they allow this change. More towards real winners and losers…

I’m begining to see a trend with the Dodges. They seem to be the only ones running cars that deserve to be run. It’s pretty rediculous that Toyota could even put a camry up against a Charger or a Challenger.
