Should the Driving Age Be Raised?

By John Coyle

Editor

Citing that car accidents are the leading cause of death for teens, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is recommending that the driving age be raised. While it’s unclear exactly how the IIHS would prefer most teens perish, the group says that states like New Jersey—where the driving age is 17—have seen significant drops in the amount fatal crashes involving young people, and that requiring drivers to be older could save thousands of lives. Now, I totally support lowering the drinking age to 18—it’s stupid that you can legally vote and join the military before you can buy beer—but I’m honestly conflicted here. What do you guys think? Is 16 old enough to drive?

I think the agfe should stay the same. It would be stupid to raise the driving age and lowering the drinking age. Maybe we could toughen out the drivers training, and extend the driving condition training. Also, most of the people that get jobs drive themselves. Also, the kids that go to college would not be able to drive home and have to be picked up. Also marching bands go to away games to play and root for their teams. The kids, squad leaders, drum majors, and section leader all drive to the high schools and after words go out to eat after words at a specific place. if this new law came intoi effect, the traddition would be stopped after a number of years. If it goes down to an electoral vote, which would be the best thing to do, i don;t think that it would go through becaus of the millions of teens that have jobs and also because of the then need for parent drivers. Only if the older people that, sometimes drive worse than the younger kids, vote it might go through.

Ok as far as the comment of the 16 year old feeling like hes a pro driver with only 5 months under his belt, He dont know what divin is. its an art form. About the topic, i belive the should restrict the license to minors not remove it. why punish all for a few that abuse it. i know Teens who follow the rules as well as some that only learn the rules so they know how to break them. give em restrictions.

I dont know who pulled these statistics out of thin air.
There are no statistics, with proven facts based off of real figures showing that Teens are the cause of the majority of street accidents in america nore is it the number 1 death among teens.

I started driving before the legal age, 13 years old. I drove mostly on back roads, im now 24 years old and guess what. Probably 20 speeding tickets(Only in safe deserted zones) and 0 accidents, not a bump or scratch, nothing.

It has nothing to do with age, as said before it has to do with experience, the large majority of adults would fail a driving test held to standard. The majority of accidents I see are women on cell phones, typically driving large suvs or small minivans.
Coming in second would most definetly be the elderly, I cant count how many times an elderly person has tried to merge into my lane, scratch that, my drivers door..

So go ahead, raise the limit at which teens are allowed to legally drive on there own. While your at it, require all women with cell phone contracts, mini vans, dodge neons and honda civics along with elderly people take a driving test 4 times a year.
Seeing as they are the large majority of street accidents.

all you fucking idiots who think 16 year olds dont have the right to drive are fucking retarded im 16 and have only had my lisence for about 5 months and im a better driver then anyone i know. im just as good as anyone the age of 30+ like everyone else says its not the age its the experience. and here in canada you get your learners for a year novice for 2 years then your class five. changing the age will not change peoples dumbass habits or just plain old stupidity if you can drive well then dont. and people over 65 who cant see 2 feet infront of them are any better driver cause they have had 50 plus years of experience no its complete bullshit. and how do you expect a teen who like me has no other way of transportation no we dont have transit where i come from so how in the hell am i supposed to get to school or work. i work at 4 in the morning you expect kids like me to wake up their parents and ask for a ride no its bullshit if we had more freedom and more rights then most of the teens would be a hell of a lot more responsible. hell we cant go to a track and race on our own cause were teens who “cant” drive as you adults put it but fuck i bet i could out drive your ass in a heartbeat. so fuck the system keep it at 16 its bullshit you cant take our rights from us when we have earned them. and if you fuck up your insurance sky rockets so its more of an incentive to be a better diver than raising the age limit. just my opinion of this crap and if you agree then post it and if you dont well i just dont give a fuck.

Kids that kill themselves on the road at 18 years will kill themselves at 21 years. Its not so much the age, its the experience. Better training maybe, and a longer period on your provisional license, not a higher age limit. I’m about to turn 18, and I’ve seen more idiots and dangerous drivers with full licenses than with provisional licenses. Some people just aren’t meant to drive anyway.

I think the driving age should remain the same. I just turned 18 and to tell you the truth i can see that some teens have that ability to know what to do in a stressful situation and some don’t. It has nothing to do with the age. there are a bunch of “mature” people out there that get into accidents. i believe that there are people that have the ability to drive well and there are others that have no clue. i’ve been driving since i was 16 and i have never even backed into a car whiles parking… 16 is the right age to drive. i believe that there should be a little more training required to see who has it and who doesn’t. speeding is an everyday thing in New York. everyone’s always in a rush. i don’t think teens cause accidents i think it’s neglagent drivers that change lanes without watching, signaling, etc.

Yes, I see so many young drivers that don’t know how to drive, it’s crazy! Another thing about getting license’s, NO MORE EXTRA FEE’S, Getting your license shouldn’t be so expensive and the testers shouldn’t be a assholes, they got to know that we pay they to have a job, taxes!

Chris W

I don’t think they should change the driving age. I am 16 myself but all of my friends and I know how to controll ourselves (though many of you find that hard to believe). Yeah we speed sometimes, who dosent. Our teachers get pulled over for speeding, because the cops are on the main road, the only way to get to school so people always get caught speeding and realize its dangerous. With enough police enforcment and the many recent accidents last school year takin the lives of many teens are being to realize how bad it is. Yeah people have accidents, such as me (see my 2003 honda civc CDub0917) but it is an accident and things happen in the rain and what not..but I was not speeding. Keep the age where it is.

It’s not age, its experience. I just got my licence and have planty of friends who suck at driving because they have hardly ever done it, and plenty who are better drivers than some peoples parents which is unfortionate because after thirty years behind the wheel you should know what your doing. And as far as the texting and driving stuff… it doesnt matter if your four or fourty if your looking at your phone instead of the road i dont care who you are you arent going to be able to drive very well.

What i think should happen is lower the permit age so new drives are force to have more driving time with there parents.

Im shore this would work cause then the new drive would be exposed to more traffic incandescent, with and experienced drive, before the are out on there own.

I am a 15 year old who has already been driving for 4 or 5 years, (On the indian reserve) and i do have the skils to drive on roads , i dont think you should have to “punnish” 16 year olds who do have the skill to drive, because of the few that dont have the skill. i am a genuine “CAR GUY” and i would be uterly depressed if the age was moved from 16 to 17 or 18. i think it is unnesicary. please tell me if you agree with me on my guestbook, just search buickpimpin101 and click on the 64 lark. thanks ,Brayden s

It’s not just that younger people are driving “recklessly” it’s also a fact of other drivers on the road not driving the way they should. Sure some younger drivers can’t drive really good, thats when Driver’s Education courses could really come in handy. But what about those 80 year old couples that LOVE to drive 40 miles an hour, or at least, 20 miles per hour under the speed limits, or drive with their bright lights on, slow almost completely to a hault when turning or just to do it. Its not just young people who drive idiotically.

Mikejungle
Sep 12, 2008 at 6:06 pm

It’s experience, not age. Hell, lower the permit age requirement so that there’s several years of experience with another driver before license acquisition. People who haven’t spent as much time behind the wheel will not know what to do in panic situations.

Sep 12, 2008 at 4:39 pm

I can not speak for all states, but when I grew up in Califorina, driving education was done in school. And you would spend a whole semester doing class work on the rules of the road, then switch over to the simulators during the next semester and finally do over 40 hours behind the wheel. All that before you got your permit. Now days you go to one of these fly but night driving school that only teach people to pass the test (40 hours in one week) and offer 6 hours of driving time. So you do the math. Are todays youth better perpared to drive or have we left it up to chance and blame their age as the problem.

Driving is no differnet than any other activity that we do. The more prepared you are the better you will do.

ok well im 19 i speed, i do like 75 on 295 or the expressway. but there are older people like mid 30’s just flying right by me like im standing still! sure driving is going to be the number one killers of teens, thats because you are only looking at one age group, and what else do teenagers do that could kill us? were too young to get most diseases older people get so like heart failure high blood pressure all that stuff is out and what is left driving and binge drinking thats basically it. so i think teen driving statistics fit right along with every other age group.

I think the age should be raised to 18. Like some of you i know alot of teens that are immature and should not be driving at age 16. I can say i im a good driver due to the fact of drivers ed and behind the wheel training, Those classes helped alot. I understand some teens can drive and are responsible but those who are not should wait to be responsible and learn how to drive safe. It might suck but its worth saving lifes and keeping us teens safe.

ok so if they’re going to raise the driving age to 18 then they also have to get the damn senior citizens that have one foot in the grave off the fuckin road too…..i say anyone over 75 is too fuckin old to drive….yeah immaturity is a factor and alot of young people get killed that way but being blind, deaf, and slow due to old age is just as dangerous…..thats just my opinion

If you raise the driving age, it’ll be just like the 21 year old drinking age. Now I’m 19, and a sophmore in college, and I can guarantee that just because some law says the drinking age is 21, doesn’t mean that people in college, and now high school, observe it. I recently spoke with some exchange students from Germany, and they couldn’t understand why people here drink until they puke… It’s because it’s illegal and if you do it you feel like you’re really bucking the system and being a rebel, or whatever you want to call it. It’s the same thing with driving. If it weren’t so taboo to get your license (or drink) people would do a lot less of it (not driving, but speeding, racing, etc.). My personal opinion is that the temporary permit age (15.5, here in Ohio) should be dropped and you should have to have them longer. Make kids drive with their parents for the first year or so, and then after they have to drive with someone over 18. This way they get a feel for driving without their parents (because everyone changes how they drive with their parents, whether or not they want to admit it) and get more experience… Just my 2 cents…

I think that the driving age should be raised because now days theres alot of irresponsible teens that gets behind the wheel, and in doing so they think that there all grown and all that just because there operating a motor vehicle, and teens like that make stupid decisions and can cause alot of damage. i should know because i use to be one of them but im blessed that i grew out of it. so i think it should be RAISED!! sorry to you youngens out there i just dont wanna see yall laying on the pavement with a white sheet over your body, know what im sayin.

I started driving when I was 7, well more bogging and later what people now call gravel pitting and now I am 18 and I drive good (at least what I can tell). I think that if they lower the permit age to 14 and make them hold it for 2 years instead of 9 months (at least that is what it was in VA) it would make for a better driver.

Mike
Sep 12, 2008 at 4:18 am

To KyleStLouis. Although experience is important, one thing you do have at the age of 35 is maturity. A more mature driver is a better driver, believe it or not. I mean just look at what Xlankan said “Fuck you to all who is saying it should be raised to 18!” This is obviously a kid that is about to get his drivers license and is just eager to speed. Driving is the most dangerous thing most of us do on a day to day basis. Our car is a weapon that provides deadly force when in the wrong hands!

Michael
Sep 12, 2008 at 4:15 am

Well, this is a difficult dilemma we’re dealing with. However, after recently taking a Defensive Driving Course to obtain a license authorizing me to drive government vehicles, I think there needs to be a much more involved drivers education program. I’m 22 yrs old now, and still remember most of the stuff they taught me in Drivers Ed, but a defensive driving class focuses more on the not-so-obvious factors that go along with day to day driving. They’re not just trying to scare the shit out of us like at Drivers Ed.

In addition, all I had to do was take four 1-hour sessions with an instructor to obtain my drivers license, then the government authorized my mom to make sure I did 50 hours on my own with my learners permit, which most people lie about including my mom! But the truth of the matter is, as Rob said, most accidents for teens are caused by either distractions or alcohol. These are things that no driving preparation program can prevent. The best thing, in this case, is to provide more police enforcement and stiffer penalties for doing these things. For example, if you get a $300 ticket for speeding through one of those Ticket-Camera’s at intersections, you’re more likely to watch for it and slow down at intersections. Which, all be it for the wrong reason, does make you more aware and a better driver.

It’s a tricky one, but any measures that help save a life are beneficial in my eyes!

Age doesnt matter when your driving…its experience.
if your 35 and you get your licence your not gonna be a good driver instantly just cuz your older. You have to drive for a while to get experience and be a better driver.

Tyler
Sep 12, 2008 at 2:40 am

It should be raised to 18. I got my license when i was 16 and i’m 18 now. My Driving has improved and changed until one day in 2006. I got pulled over by the pigs in my Cavalier for speeding, which is now the show car. I have these new drivers(age 16) on my ass 24/7 in Wisconsin. No matter what vehicle i’m driving. I own a Ford, Chevy, and a Jeep. The ford and Jeep were for sale cheap and i bought them and fixed them up. Yea, i own a Ford and Chevy, but i don’t freakin care. oh, and if the driving age was raised to 21 for some stupid reason, i would still drive no matter what.

Okay, obviously the problem with motor vehicle deaths and teens is not the driving or driver, but the distractions. Shit, take away the cell phones, makeup, shaving, and other stupid things that occupy our time on the road that belong elsewhere. I do construction and at 5:30 in the morning on my way to work and 2:30 when I get off, I get asshole retards all the time nearly hitting me because they are on their phone, putting on makeup, eating breakfast, or something awkward. I drive through Anaheim late June and signs everywhere said hands-free required for cell phones 1st of July. Also, I know parents do their best to raise their kids but if they monitored their childrens’ driving like with speeding, proper lane changes, proper left-hand turns, paying special attention to circumstances on the road, it may help give kids better driving habits and make them aware of hazards. And come on, the written test was an exact copy of the driver’s handbook. It needs worse-case scenario questions. Also, the drivinig test was a joke. Make it a little longer and challenging, make sure the teen is properly prepped for the road. So fuck changing the age. The age isn’t the problem, it’s everything else.

Shawn
Sep 12, 2008 at 1:25 am

I persionaly dont think they should raise the legal age because that doesnt weed out any bad drivers. I think they should make the laws a little more strict on getting your licience. Tougher final drive test, something. Where I live, if you can turn the car on, you can pretty much drive. Lazy state employees gave my friend a licience 3 years ago just because it was friday and the lady didnt wanna reschuedual. Not to mention the fact that here its a 3 strikes your out type of deal. Other people I know, DUI at 16,17,18,19.. some didnt even get thier licience suspended for it! Thats a different argument though. Either way the system they have in place now is a joke. Rasie the age limit? Naw. Raise restrictions on who they let drive a 2-3 ton battering ram? Please.

They need to keep the age where its at, honestly there are stupid drivers at all ages. Sure you can say young people race or speed, or any of that bull. Fact is 16 or 18 none of that will change, as I said stupidity at all ages. I think they should make better drivers ed courses and give mandatory defensive driving courses.

16 should be the “Student/Learning” Driving age.

It should be legal to 16 year old’ to posses a driving “Learners Permit”.

Only able to drive a vehicle owned and insured by the “Parent/s” with and only with “1″ adult over 18. “Failure to do so sets back privileges in increments of a year if caught”.

It is illegal or hard to find a minor to be held accountable for damages or held under contracts, so why set up a system to fail the minors, victims, and parents.

Parents should be held accountable (in most situations)for the actions of their children/minors, and for the most part are,

“so they should be the ones to decide when it is financial, or reasonable time for their child to drive”.

(There should be exceptions)

States and Government set the guide lines.

“IT IS NOT THE THEIR JOB TO TELL US”

Dunkel Mann
Sep 12, 2008 at 12:19 am

if parents stopped giving all these kids money for their cars, like “oh i need money for this and that” and the parents have no idea that they are using these parts to make their car much faster (than stock, but usually its some POS that is not even properly modified) then the kids start racing and end up killing themselves and the three other people in the car because theyre stupid enough to have everyone they know racing with them. How much stupider can kids get? it doesn’t matter, and if all states had that law where you can’t drive at night until your 18 (like between 12 and 5 or something) unless your with someone over 21 (thats how Hawaii is if i am not mistaken, i got my license before all of that crap).

plus if people drove more, they would be better drivers. this is why everyone in Hawaii drives like a total fucking moron, because they are one when they get behind the wheel. also, merging and other actions involving common sense are asking for too much intelligence without someone holding their hand through it.

I don’t see how raising the driving age is gonna help at all. I’m from a small farm town in Rhode Island and most kids here know how to drive perfectly and have their own cars at 14, I had two cars, but most of us around here drive a hell of alot better then gown adults in other places. If a kid drives like shit at 16 then chances are he or she will drive like that at 18. I know my parents would much rather have me driving at 16 where they have way more control over me then if I was 18 and they didn’t have as much. If these insuracnce companies were smart they would try to make it illegal to drive and talk on a cell phone because alot of my friends including me are great drivers, but the second you put a phone in our hands and we’re all over the road. I almost smashed my Chevy pickup into a John Deere tractor on the side of a road last year because I was on my phone, since then I haven’t used my phone in the car and haven’t had anymore close calls.

I think that’s complete bullshit. I’ve been waiting since I was 5 to get my liccense and last Febuary I bought and restored my 85′ GMC Sierra Classic. Now I’m only a few months from my permit and these insurance guys want to raise the driving age, what the hell! If they really want to make sure that teens are better drivers then these guys should make it harder for teens do get their hands on alcohaul and make it illegal to use cell phones while driving. In my state you have been able to drive at 16 forever and now they decide to change the driving age, come on now.

but for me, i think it should stay the same, i live in a small town, damn before you get your license it SUCKS! all your buddies live a couple towns over, a 2 hour bike ride really sucks when your 17 if you could have your license and drive it in 10 minutes, i think it should stay the same

I think its more important of the causes of teen accidents, if its because of stupidity and lack of maturity, then yes it might help to raise it, BUT, if the accidents are caused because of lack of experience, then raising the age would not help at all

I think they should keep the driving age were it is everybody gets in accidents no matter what age they are its is 16 year olds that can drive better then grown ass men and women….and the place like jersey, philly and new york were the driving age is 17 and 18 if you are from up north there transportation system are great and you really dont need a car as for down south like nc and sc where there transportion sucks and you need a car because she is so far away 15 and 16 needs to stay they same……my point is it doesnt matter how old you are some people just drive its just thats simple

Matt
Sep 11, 2008 at 10:40 pm

Honestly i couldn’t wait to drive but they have the different stages of the license and i think that its stupid it should just be the old school permit then after a year get the license. Your age doesn’t matter… i say it should stay about the same. Im 18 and i would say that is high school aged and i dont think im a dumbass… Honestly Alot of teens are idiot drivers but i have had 4 vehicles… 3 camaros and one truck. I currently have an 86 IROC-Z that i drive everyday. I have never had tickets or raced my car because im not stupid. Although as mark stated that all high school students are… i think its just based on how the parents raised them. If i am gonna race im taking it to the track. I just think they should be watched more and be taught by their parents that its stupid to get out here and race and drink and drive. I do think its a good idea to not let them haul around their buddies right when they get the license. But i personally started moving our cars for my parents and by 16 it was nothing to drive. If nothing else they should just make it a year and a half wait. This way they have a little more training and then also require Drivers Ed. But i promise you that its not just because its their age or if they are in high school. There are people in their 20s-30s who are freakin idiot drivers… it just depends on the person.

BAN CELL PHONE USE FOr DRIVERS IN ALL 50 STATES!!!!!!! I know some people who are teens and are great drivers until they use the cell phone while driving. I agree that some teenagers might drive like crap, but most teenagers are very good drivers. I say if a teen is sited for more than two traffic accidents then they should have to give up their license until they’re 18. But all in all I think the age should remain at 16.

Obviously I’m gonna say no because I’m 16 and am 3 months away from getting my license, and have already paid off my car. And anyone who thinks the drinking age should be lowered in an idiot, because then those teenage drivers your so woried about would be driving around drunk.

hell no!! in my country people drive as early as 10(albania) so if anything lower it!! i learned to drive when i was 12 got my licence on my 16th birthday ive totaled 5 cars and and have many outstanding speding tickets and almost a dui!! which kinda makes me think it shold be raised but than again my parents never watched my driving what i drove or where i went with it!! so its the parents fault!

Sep 11, 2008 at 9:08 pm

what about grandpas and grandmas? take away their licenses too please. Their driving is so much more scarier than teenage driving… and I’m totally sick of them complaining that it’s the young drivers that are causing accidents. They cause as much accidents as we do. And those stupid hoes with their stupid cell phones needs to get off the road too.

My son is 15 itching for that chance to to get behind the wheel. We have picked him up an old Chevy Malibu with a 6 cylinder that needs work. He is under the hood everyday learning how to fix things, turning bolts, and getting dirty. He has washed that thing everyday since he bought it, and has even put in a stereo himself. I have tought him to respect a vehicle since he was a baby, and have set an example as to how to operate a motor vehicle properly. When he gets his drivers liscence he will be allowed to drive to school, and work. After he earns my wife and my trust he will maybe be able to take his car on a date once in a while. He will still have driving privleges however his driving will be limited and kept an eye on. This is how to prevent teenagers from going out and killing themselves. You take away kids driving to parties, and cruising with a bunch of friends in the car, and then you take away the accident rate. It is up to the parents to make the desisions, not our government who more and more is taking rights away from us. Quite frankly I would rather my son drive at 16 while I can keep an eye on him then have him get a liscence at age 18 where I no longer have control of his driving. That is just backwards logic.

Iowa law- learners permit at age 14
take drivers ed and you can drive to school if 1. youve had your permit for 6 months and 2. youre in a sport
take drivers ed and you get your intermediate liscense at 16 (curfew)
full liscence at 17 with or without drivers ed
i think we need to be more concerned about old drivers, women drivers, and retards on their goddamned cell phones than teenagers

I agree with “missingparts” below rasing the age from 16 to 18 is not gonna do anything but make the age of inexperinced drivers higher. So heres what I propose what we do. At the age of 15 make the permit a 2 year deal and not let teens get their licence till they’re 17. In that 2 years have them attend manditory drivers education and defensive driving classes. The next part you’re about to read has nothing to do with this article. I Belive that senior citizens over the age of 60 should have to get tested every year or at least get and eye exam. I don’t know how many times i’ve come upon a wreck and the person pulled out infront of the person or was not able to see the other person.

Being from a small town, in a rural community most kids know how to drive by 13-14. I was driving a stick at the age of 11 because i had to move my dads truck which hauled the welder while he worked. I am now attending college in a much larger town, and everyone drives crazy. I think it is impossible for city kids to drive without pealing out every chance they get in there cars there parents bought for them. So to lower the driving age would not help anything, i am seeing 21-22 year old drive stupider then any 15 and 16 year old back home. I think it should come down to if you are prepared or not. If you fail your drivers test your first time there should be atl east a 6 months to a year before you get another chance. Another thing i have noticed is large city drivers are always on the phone. Stop texting while you drive please.

Ive been driving since i was 16 im 23 now only two tickets one for speeding which i deserved and 1 because the cop pulled me over just as i pulled out of the college drive way and he didnt say why or even run my tags he just walked around the car 3 times untill he found something wrong…my inspection sticker. Raising the age is not the answer strictor laws and regulations for teens who violate the right to drive need to be in place.I live in Mass and the age where you can ur lisence is raised to 18 ridiculous but you need 12 hours whith an instructor and 24 hours whith your parents along with a ton of class time to get your lisence and the state troopers who adminster the driving test are strict if cut a corner just a little to sharp they will flunk you just ask my sister who did this 3 times.

Do it just like in Holland,
Buy beer 16, (they drink it round that age anyhow)
Driving licence at 18 whit first lessons by a teacher (not their parents) and a exam, only when the teacher says your ready!

I know this will be an unpopular comment, but if you want to keep teens from killing themselves behind the wheel then give them crappy cars to drive. If parents would quit buying performance cars for their inexperienced drivers then we would not lose so many of them to accidents. Inexperienced and inattentive drivers do not do well in sports cars so why do people still buy fast cars for their teens? Stick kids in something useless and easy to control until they have some experience.

I think they should leave it the same, but administer an “idiot test” to drivers of all ages. It would involve them being hooked up to a polygraph (lie detector) and someone asking them questions like: “will you speed?”, “can you anticipate what’s going to happen a couple of hundred meters down the road?”, “will you not weave between lanes like a ricer?”, “are you capable of moving your finger 1 #%$&ing inch to activate a turn signal?”, etc…

OK, so being a resident youngster, and having done more than one stupid-fun things in my time, i have a proposal. Go to the other end of the spectrum. Instead of raising the driving age, how about having drivers ed classes for more than 3 weeks, and more driving time with an instructor. Let the kids drive more in “Safe” areas, and keep the age at 16, I bet you’ll have less accidents then, at least a few.

Raise the driving age to 21. ONLY MALE and OVER 21should be allowed to drive. An under 21 person’s brian isn’t fully baked and they are a hazard on the road. While we at it we should ban women from driving as well. WTF are they all texting and yapping on cell phones while they’re driving!

It should be raised. It has been proven that the adolescent mind has not fully developed at age 16 as good judgment is not quite there yet. I think our insurance rates would decrease, and these days I don’t think there is as much of a need for 16 year olds to drive. So raise the age to at least 17 if not 18!!

People need to learn how to drive to survive, because you typically graduate when your 16 it’s kind a sink or swim scenerio.

If your not going to college you need to learn to drive so that you can go to work. If you are going to college it gives you a little more time, but you still might need to drive to and from college or around town if you commute daily to classes.

Wow as I guessed everyone here who is really young doesn’t want it raised. I agree with some of the other posters though, I think the issues isn’t with age as much as it is with experience. I agree with all of the new restrictions here in MD for young drivers. I am 20 and have never been in an accident or gotten a moving violation, mostly because when I was younger my parents were so strict on my driving. I think the age should be the same to give responsible teenagers (I know mostly an oxymoron) a chance to prove themselves. However, I think the punishments for offenses should be harsh…

it doesn’t prevent deaths, it just postpones them so to speak. Sure deaths in teens under 18 will drop, but deaths of 18-19 or so will increase due to inexperienced drivers. Sorry to say it but its a part of life. Its sad, but people die. Driving a car is a risk you take everytime you get behind the wheel.

Being from Wyoming… a state that issues licenses at 14 to those who meet special conditions… I think raising it is a bad idea. It would really impact rural states, and households where they aren’t parents/older siblings to shuttle teens around to jobs and sports and what not.

All you’re going to do is have a bunch of unexperienced 17/18 year olds on the roads… instead of 16/17 year olds.

And I have to laugh at how they use NJ has an example… NJ has the highest accident rate in the country… maybe they should spend more effort on teaching the ADULTS of NJ how to drive…

I’m getting really sick of all the new rules they are placing on young drivers. Here in Illinois they more than doubled the amount of student driving required and limit the number of people you can have in the car. So instead of having one person drive and have 3-4 passengers, they have to take more cars.

Sorry, but people get in accidents and some die. It’s called life.

I was 15 in maine and driving..legislation way over my head. My whole class was a target for the damndest things. Unusual for me, and alot of rural peole is that I leartned how to drive a tractor trailer before I got my license at 15 for a car. It is dangerous if an adult thinks it is…if ya know what I mean. We aren’t all slow in the learn category. Quicker than grandma at 15 ..and somehow deadlier? I drank when I was 18..and in the military. Am I some kinda last of old school in the last 20 years? must be my state…

I agree with the decision-making point from fortyfordsedan: you’ll find irrational, poor drivers who are a menace to most other folks on the road in any age group. Good decision makers, who’ll make good, responsible drivers, can be found at many ages, including < 18.

I began driving for work during summers when I was 12, two years under the then legal limit in Idaho of 14. I drove a dumptruck, and frequently towed a trailer with a backhoe or tractor on it. Despite the weird looks I occasionally got, I never had any issues whatsoever.

Age isn’t the problem: ability to make smart decisions and keep a cool head, particularly with a short reaction time, aren’t something the Gov’t can easily ascertain, so as usual they’ll seek to legislate around the root cause… once again letting the least common denominator prevail, and failing the cool-headed folks with common sense who could easily be decent drivers at age 14, or 16.

Raising the driving age would also be a pain in the ass for kids who have jobs, that’s another 2 years of parents having to drive their kids to work, or sports, or club meetings, etc. Especially the kids who are involved in high school, and the school isn’t walking distance, it makes it tough to not have a liscense at 16.

Sep 10, 2008 at 1:26 am

Like the un-named first person who commented, I think raising the age will just make the age of inexperienced drivers higher.

I’m 18, and have been driving since I was 16, and have never gotten a ticket or been in a car accident. I know there are a lot of people my age who can’t say that, either due to less driving competence, or bad luck.

Really, I don’t think age is the issue, it is that some people just aren’t as driving competent as others. I’m sure there are some 15 or 16 year olds that can drive better than 18+ year olds on the road right now.

I don’t think experience is really the reasoning for the recommendation, it is decision making. I can personally say that when I was younger I did many things in traffic that I would not do today, not because I have driven longer but because I don’t take the risks I would have when I was younger. I would say a better route for them might be to recommend restricting the privileges that teens have in a car, such as no night driving and limiting the number of passengers in the car with them and I believe some states already do that.

Honestly though, I think nothing will significantly decrease the number of traffic fatalities until people change the way they think about driving. When you are driving you should be focused on driving, not texting or shaving, because most accidents are very avoidable by the cars around them.

Lol I love “car accidents are the leading cause of death for teens” what about the rest of us? Oh yeah! we have to deal with drunk drivers…. I’ll feel much safer if they raise the driving age limit…..not. Cars and trucks are deadly period, even the most experienced driver can crash and kill himself, other people, or both. It’s all about education and how you convey it to people.

Anonymous
Sep 9, 2008 at 11:45 pm

of course it is. if you were to raise it to 18 the drivers would still be inexperienced behind the wheel of a car.
