What Did You Drive in High School?
By Rob Einaudi
Editor-in-Chief
Before I scraped together the money my first Mopar at age 17, I drove my parent’s ’77 Coupe DeVille. It was medium blue with a light blue interior and had the factory 8-track. It and didn’t look quite as sharp as Ken Dog’s car below, but it was still kind of fun. It was tough, too–survived me and my two younger brothers. What did you drive in high school? (And if you’re in high school, what are you driving now?)

I’am in love with cars! lol therefore I have a 993 911 C2, my dad’s old Afla that he got new in 91, he paid $42k for it!!! lol now I couldn’t even get $4k. And I also have a E39 M5 I’am planning to sell it thought, so I can buy one of my dream cars, an Audi RS6 from 2003.

first car was a ’74 Vette i bought with my paper route maoney in 1988…. obviously it was a fixer upper so when i turned 16 bought a 1985 rx7, that was a fun little ride…. then bought a ’76 Jeep CJ7 with BIG lift and 35′s, dropped a 3′fitty in that bad boy and it would roast all 4 boots…. but the craziest thing, i got the most play when i drove my mommy’s 1984 pontiac booneville with the cushy Broughm interior and the big backseat…. even with the steel wheels the chicks dug it!! Oh the good old days!!

81 Datsun long bed pickup. Complete with ladder racks and a tool box. I made it get air a few times, spun in the snow in the school parking lot with my friends. Ultimately ran it into the ground. Next was a 71 Volvo 164. For $300 it got me around for a few months before it fell apart as well. Poor thing suffered from vapor locks. It loved to stall in intersections. Then the 85 Toyota truck. Dad took it back when I moved out.

I drove a 1971 Oldsmobile cutlass s with a 350 rocket that my dad bought when I was one then he gave it to me when I turned 16. It was in primer because I spent my summer between junior and senior year restoring it with my uncle and I didn’t have enough money to paint it. I still have it today and I’m finally getting ready to paint it. It’s my baby and I love her to death

Back in 98-99 i had and still have a 1977 oldsmobile cutlass supreme brougham 4 door- 350 rocket- 4barrel- turbo intake with a 350 turbo tranny, bought it for 150 bucks (back then). I rely miss that car, loooaaads of fun and i out ran 2 cops in that car, they were no match. I still have it, it sits at my ma’s house waiting for me to save up enough $$$$$$$ to get it restored, one day it will come alive again and be another one of the meanest street machines u’ll see and hear around. When i was done with fixin up the motor on that car i had 400hp to the rear wheels, couldnt keep tires on it, i could go through 4 sets in a week rotating them- sometimes more. But ya, it was a very fun and fast car, i think about it almost every day. Hopefully sooner than later ill have enough $$$$$$$ to restore it and get it back on the road where it belongs:)

I got my parent’s 1981 Honda Civic, and I’ve still got it. It’s an awesome car – tops out at 150 down a hill, and haven’t had any major problems with it until recently. Unfortunately, I’m preparing myself for its funeral, as it’s jumping out of 5th gear
I still remember the day Dad brought it home when I was 6yrs old – it’s been in the family for about 14 yrs. R.I.P. Little Honda.

It was 1985. First car was a 1973 Plymouth Satellite sedan with a 318. It was that old Mopar sky blue. To up the manlyness level as best I could, I put some black K-Mart sport mirrors, pinstripes, slotted alloy wheels with white letter tires, and a glasspack on it. I’ve owned much nicer cars since then, but I still miss that car. It was unique and I was introduced to some of the more interesting aspects of the opposite gender in it.

I had a 1988 Jeep Comanche Pioneer 4×4. If you’ve never owned a Comanche, then you wouldn’t know how much fun those little trucks were. It carried the same engine as the cherokee 4.0 I6, but with no where near the weight of the SUV counterpart. This truck flew, and went many places i wasn’t sure i was going to be able to get back out of. I had to sell it, blown clutch hydraulic throwout… Oh, how i miss my comanche…

1989 Honda CRX. Bought it for 260 put 100 into it to get it back legal. Drove it about a year, and then rolled it coming down a canyon after work the summer after my senior year. Sucker looked like a crushed Pepsi can. But I came out of it alive, Thanks little car.

I drove a 63 Ford Fairlane 500 4DR. It was baby blue with a 200ci inline six and a 2speed. That thing was a beast but I only shelled out $300 for a running car. Wish I could find it today.

My first car was a 1974 Mustang II Mach 1, given to me by my grandmother. 2.8L V-6, brown with tan interior, and all original. Actually loved that car until I wrecked it rear ending a 66 stang. Still drove it until I went to college, then dadsold it for 200. I really do miss it, and hope to get one like it again some day. Whenever it was in shop or undriveable, i drove my parents 1987 Nissan Van! What fun that was! 5-speed, 2.4, RWD…It would light the tires up easily, so much fun! Have fun trying to find one nowadays since Nissan bought almost all of them back and crushed them.

My first car was a hand-me-down from my dad. It was a 1980 Chevy Chevette that he bought brand new in 1979. It was his first car and we had it and drove it for over 20 years! There was a problem with the carb, so it would die every time it was put in nuetral- so when coming to a stop, you had to keep one foot on the gas and the other on the brake!
When it was handed down to me, the Chevette was on it’s last leg and sadly, it was towed away for a tax refund not 3 weeks after it was given to me!
My first car that was really mine was a 1988 Honda CRX. It was an awesome little car – the pocket rocket! I payed $3000 for it and owned it for 4 years. I jumped it over some train tracks and bent the frame so bad that my radiator was crushed against the engine block. Wish I could get another one!

In highschool I bought an 82′ chevy chevette. Got it for 350$ when I was 15 and had it fixed up and rolling by the time I had my license. Loved that car, had a blast in it. Used to spin doughnuts all day in the driveway of our farm. At highway speeds the engine was so noisey it drowned out the stereo.

I am still in high school,(senior), and I saved every penny I earned so that I could buy my dream car, and I did just that. In may of this year I bought, my daily driver, my beautiful 1991 Chevrolet Camaro Z28. 350TPI, hydramatic tranny w/ a B&M slapstick. Electric Blue, and American Racing wheels. WITH, a all-Hooker Exhaust system. I am the envy of everyone at my school, and it is great!

I had a 1978 Honda Civic as my highschool driver. The car was red and looked brand new, even though it was 8 years old. The engine was a diffrent story. If I drove it on the highway, I had to clean one of the four spark plugs because it fouled out after 70 Kms/45miles. Burned a bit of oil!!!

My first was a ’77 Ford F-150. The thing was a monster. I use to plow through snow drifts in Winnipeg with it and nothing would stop it. It did me good for about five years until I broke down and bought my first new car – a brand new ’98 Dodge Neon. I paid my buddies parents $500 for the truck and after the five years sold it for exactly the same. Now I’m on my second Neon and she’s had more cosmatic surgery then Michel Jackson.

I graduated earlier in the year and I’d been driving my dad’s $2,000 ’87 MR2. Such a great little car. I bought my AE86, also for $2000, over spring break and got it fixed up in time to drive for about the last week of school. Now I’ve got the MR2 again at the university while the ‘Rolla’s getting ready for paint.

A 1971 Volkswagon Beatle. About 3 different shades of red on it. Stock radio and speakers and they about to fall apart. I remember when I got it up to 80 mph once. The thing could barely handle it – I thought at any moment every rusted bolt holding it together was gonna break and I’d be sliding along to road in just my seat. A friend and I added an aftermarket exhaust and in our efforts to put it on, it developed an exhaust leak. It backfired like a shotgun blast every time I started it and shifted gears. Classic. The biggest POS I ever had but I smile every time I see an old Bug and remember those days.

I am a senior in high school and I drive my ’81 Pontiac Phoenix. I got it in 2005 for only $1,900. It is the only car like it and one of the most popular cars. It also is one of the loudest except for some guy with a hopped up STI. Always gets look when I pull into parking lot.The best part is when start it up after school, very loud, everyone looks. I really love it. Lots of fun to drive.

First car was a 1978 Buick LeSabre Sport Coupe. 3.8 TURBO V6 motor w/Rochester Quadra-BOG carb. Every option except 8-track and leather seats. Maroon on maroon velour.
One of the cars GM used to test the motor which would become famous in a Regal body (T-TYPE/GN/GNX)
It’s most likely been melted down by now.

My first ride was actually a 1987 Dodge Dakota my Dad had bought new. I got in on my 16th b-day back in 1995. When I graduated in June,1998 my Dad told me if I would give him back the Dakota, which had 200,000+ miles on it, that he would give me his 1976 Chevrolet Nova SS. That was my graduation gift. It had a 305 2 barrel engine with a Turbo 350 trans. The only thing special about the car, besides the SS emblems, was it had air-shocks. And yes, it was a true, ORIGINAL, Supersport Nova. It was orange with a beige interior. I still know the guy that has it to this date, but his wife won’t let it go. So I’m waiting until that day so I can purchase it back. I’ve been waiting since 2001 and I talk to him quite regularly. So, only time will tell…..

I graduated in 1997. I drove and still drive my first car its a 1973 AMC Javelin AMX.
When I was a small boy and learning to talk my Grandpa Tom was my babysitter. And he worked very hard to get me to say the word HOT ROD, that was my first word.
That being said, My first car had to be something that followed suit. It may not be a “HOT ROD” but a muscle car is just as good in my book.
I also had a 81 Pontiac Bonnivile (wrecked), a 87 Chrysler Lebaron(burned) , a 91 Plymouth Laser (hated), and a 91 Chevy Beretta (loved it but wrecked it).

My first vehicle was a 1986 Dodge ram. Two tone brown and tan, long bed, solid 318 v8 covered in grease under the hood. I loved that beast dearly. It got about 10mpg on a good day, could only hit about 90mph, and could creep to 60 in about 14 seconds. It had electrical problems, holes in the exhaust, dents everywhere, etc. If you stomped on the gas and then let off again quickly, it would backfire and throw sparks out the tailpipe. If you started it and took off too quickly, it would misfire and chug to a stop. If you stomped on the brakes, the rear wheels would lock up and it would keep going. But the bench seat was enormous and comfortable, the interior was cavernous and wonderful to sit in, and the engine was dead quiet when coasting along. I loved the thing dearly, and was miserable when they finally had to tow it away.

My first car was a beater my parents bought for me while I was a junior in high school. It was a ’88 Chevrolet Nova. A true beater car. It was “cool” though, I could drive anywhere through anything and it kept on running. Later on it was handed down to my two other brothers. It still runs today, although its not in our family anymore.

i am a senior in high school as well and my first car was and still is a white 1964 Triumph Spitfire mk1.
triumph cars from the late 1950s until 1980 were rust buckets but this car is very solid.
every body gets a laugh out of it when i pull into school.
the spitfire is light enough where the track team at my school picked up the front end to where the wheels came off the ground.
very fun to drive and it gets 27MPG city.
click my name for a link to my website, i have a background image of the me autocrossing my car.

I had the best, a ’71 Monte Carlo that my dad had refurbished and painted a metallic green with a white top. My brother was 3 years younger and couldn’t drive, so he tinkered on it. The guys in town hated me. I would drag race and beat em all! My car was shoe-polished so many times, I had the first white-tinted windows. lol My dad built a Cordova and had me give my Monte Carlo to my brother. I hated it. It was nice and big, but I couldn’t race it. A week before I was going to ask my brother for my car back, he fell asleep at the wheel, breaking a telephone pole in half and totaled it. I cried for 2 weeks! Thankfully he only slightly injured his knee in the accident. (The police said he shouldn’t have even survived! Guess because that’s when they made cars out of metal?)

My first car was a 1970 Monte Carlo. Paid $400 for it. Lady said it would not run. Towed it home Dad and me popped the hood, wait…wait…wait…,the plug wires were not on the correct plugs. Drove it until I got married and she convinced me to sell it. What an idiot I was.

My first car was a 1972 Pontiac LeMans GT – I bought it at a local Chevy dealer and had it until after college. I don’t think I’ve seen another one of that particular model – It was forest green with gold factory side stripes, black interior with buckets and console. Only had a 350 2-barrel and Turbo 350, but lots of fun to drive.

WOW my first car, which came at age 15 and 9 mos, was a 1980 Datsun 200 SX. http://www.datsuns.com/200sx/index.htm Now for a Jr in High school, mine was sweet. Mom’s had it before it was passed down to me when she got her BMW. It was two tone copper and gold, sun roof, luggage rack on the trunk, and best of all mom’s had the stock wheels taken off and I was roll’n on wire rims and white walls which really set the car off! Man wish I had digi pic’s of it but they are all on film.
Oh well I’ve graduated since then in more ways than one…

THIS WAS MY EXACT FIRST CAR! I turned 16 in 2004 and that christmas i found a 77 coupe deville, same color red with white half top, same spoke hubcaps, chrome in perfect condition, the only difference were the seats. they were red suede with white vinyl piping. it was exactly in just as good of a condition as this one, it only had 60k original miles and the only thing that had ever been replaced was the suspension. I paid $3300 for it and it turned more heads than the rich kids who drove hummer’s and bmw’s in the high school parking lot. Unfortunately, I only kept the car about 6 months before I decided to sell it. The engine was a 7.0 liter 425ci gm big block, so obviously it wasnt very easy on gas. I had to sell that car back when gas was only 2.50 a gallon and everyone was complaining about gas being so expensive…if we only knew how much we were going to be paying just 3-4 years later…I sold it to someone in town for $2700 in the same perfect condition that i bought it. I still see the current owner driving it around all the time, but they have really let the car get into really bad shape. they knocked the power antenna off, the emblems have all been stolen, one of the taillights are broken, and there are several basketball sized dents in the doors. it breaks my heart to see the car in that condition because it was the car i had wanted for my entire life. whenever I finally get rich, lord willing, I will buy that car back and have it restored to its original glory. geez i dont know why i talked so much about this haha

im a senior now, but i started high school with a purple 1993 ford ranger. i put a flowmaster 50 series muffler on it and besides that it was stock. it had green spots on the seats so all my friends called it barney. the thing i miss about it though was i could hold a burnout until they popped every time and powerslide with the best of ‘em. now i have a 2004 mini cooper s that will blow the doors off everything at my school except for a guy with a modded mustang gt. gah how i love superchargers.

My first car was a 1960 Ford Fairlane, straight six, three on the tree, heater, no radio, $60.00. That was 1974. Followed by a 66 4 door Impala, (Party Car) then a 67 GTO I bought for $200. After painting it in shop class, I sold it and bought my graduation car a 1957 Caddy Sedan DeVille. Powder Blue, White top,FM converter oooohhhh. I honestly don’t miss any of ‘em.

I had a 1994 Geo Metro. I drove it for 3-4 years and I have to say that it was the biggest POS I have ever owned. I have heard about other people that owned these cars and had no problems, but not me. I had to replace almost everything on the car. Engine, clutch, rear hatch shocks, spark plugs, water pump…and the list goes on. I mean I understand regular maintenance, but I have never heard of an engine losing compression at 112,000 miles. Biggest POS car i ever owned. Ohh and the only good thing about it was that it got around 50+ mpg, but every cent I saved went right back into the car to keep it running. Do not ever buy a used Geo Metro.

I graduated in 1964 and I had a 1953 Plymouth Cranbrook convertible, a 1955 Chevy 210 2 door sedan with a 265-V8 column shift. I sold this for $75.00 because everybody had a ’55 or ’56(even in 1964).I then bought a 1954 Studebaker Commander 2 door coupe with a 232 V8, put in a sparkomatic shifter and beat any 265 chevy around. This car also had the orginal hillholder in it. I would love to have any of these cars back. I bought all three of these cars in my senior yrat for a total of $185.00.

I am in high school now and I have a ’98 ZX2. Really am waiting till I can afford something fast… and RWD. And the tranny already went out once. There wasn’t a single MTX in town;had to have it shipped. And my buddy’s cars are a ’91 Celica GT fastback (better than my car), a ’98 Neon R/T (better than my car), the guy with the R/T also has a ’07 Ninja 250, and the only other MTX I know of in the lot is some girl’s ’91 Accord.

I owned 2 different 1985 Mustang GT’s and a 1984 Bronco II before I graduated (we were only allowed to drive to school senior year) but the car I actually rolled to school in was a black on black 1991 Mustang LX 5.0 hatch with a 5-lug conversion and Flowmasters. There were no fewer than 5 fox body Mustangs in my school lot that year and they caught everyones attention. Of course we all felt like we got a slap in the face when “Nicest Car” in the yearbook went to a goober with a stock Miata.

i had a couple of beaters, a 79 dodge d50 pick up, and a 77 buick century both lasted a very short time. after the buick died i bought a 73 ford maverick 2 door from a friend for 50 bucks…only catch was he got bored one day and targa topped it, with no plans to replace the roof. i drove it for 3 years, rain, tropical storms, sun, everything with no roof, just threw a tarp over it when i parked. (at least when you were doing at least 30 mph with the windows up most of the rain stayed out of the car)

Started with my dad’s old 1988 F-150. Was a extended cab long box with a cap. Was like a tank. My first own car was a 1989 Century Sedan. Bought it from my cousin for $200 after they killed a deer with it. Had the indestructible 2.5L Iron Duke. I then finished off high school with a 96 Neon. Biggest Mistake ever. Blew every seal on the engine at least once. Got rid of it shortly after High School.

I graduated in 1993. For much of high school my ride was a 1967 Ford Galaxie 500 fastback with a 390. I loved that car. Unfortunately, something broke in the engine and instead of letting me fix it my parents sold it while I was in school one day. I still miss that thing.
My next car was a 1984 Mustang 4-cylinder which blew a head gasket shortly after I got it. I convinced my parents to let me fix it, which I did, and drove it until it completely died while in college.

Graduated high school in 1991. During high school I drove my family’s 1964 Chevy Impala, 2 door, hardtop, 283 V8 with Power glide transmission. It was known as the tank by my friends. My father bought the car used in 1966. It was handed down to my older sister, then to me. My father finally sold the car 8 years ago.

Wow…I drove a 1981 Ford Fairmont wagon, crap brown with brown vinyl interior, 8-track in the dash and black steel wheels…now I didnt let most people see that it also had a 302 CuIn blown mustang motor under the hood, flowmaster exhaust and a ford 9 inch behind with a Muncie 4 speed…would blow the doors off of most cars on the road at the time…I love the sleepers

I just graduated, and I was fortunate enough to receive my families 1997 Chevrolet Tahoe LT 4×4 with just over 150,000 miles. I put a bunch of work into it i.e. Magnaflow dual in single out exhaust w/16″ tip, In dash DVD/CD/Ipod touchscreen, Mesh Grill, LED lights all around, blacked out tailights and emblems, and finally 22″ Akuza Sting Wheels. It wasn’t the best or most expensive car in the lot, but I love it, and it did stand out from the rest. I can’t wait to get home and drive it again.

I jus graduated last year and I drove an 81 K5 Blazer, a 91 Honda Accord, a 93 Toyota Camry, an 04 F-150, and an 05 Ford 500. The K5 was my first car and it was my baby. It had a strong runnin 305 and 4wd. The speedometer and odometer never worked when I had it but I didnt care I loved that truck. It had one of the loudest exhausts at my school and all it had was a busted muffler I loved startin it up and scarin the shit out of ppl. The only thing I did to it was a Kenwood head unit and a system that knock shit loose inside and I regret it cause I pass them occasionally and I see wut it could have been. I kept the truck until it tore up for the last time and I got fed up with it and started drivin the other cars listed.

I went through so many cars in about 2 years of highschool, my town wanted to tax my families driveway as a junk yard. Big ones, little ones, bent ones, v8s,6′s, fours, rwd, fwd, classic, not so classic…and my opinions of every automobile on earth just by sight is still unchangeable from my very fast learning experience…nothing was more than 100 bucks and maybe some beer. LOL.No regrets.

My first car, which I had while I was in high school, was a ’91 Toyota MR2 Turbo. And I did pay for it with my own money. I had aftermarket shock/springs, MBC, FCD, intake and an over sized TB inlet. A year after getting the MR2 I bought a ’90 240SX SE as a winter beater.

I took to using the old family car, a 1990 Blazer Full Size. Mechanically pretty sound. Strong 350, with beautiful 4WD. No options, AM radio, cracked windshield, dove left every time I hit the brakes, and I had to be careful what I put on the floor because it might fall through a rust hole (nearly my wallet one time). With one broken windshield washer, I could shoot the car in front of me at stop lights. It was loud. When people asked me if I had dual exhaust I told them, “Yeah, one hole in the muffler and one at the end of the pipe.”
I stopped using it when the tailgate fell off and bought my Cutlass about a month before graduation. PMEHS class of 2006.

93 Grand am, what I like to call the blue meanie. Had a 3.3 V6, it was pepsi can blue and had the honeycomb wheel looking hubcaps. Car was a turd and a half, but it got me where I had to be, got laid in it the first time, got stoned in it the first time. although it was a piece of crap it never left me stranded, almost a few times but I always managed to limp it home. 1973 Dodge Charger S.E. with the 400 2bbl, 727 TF, Broughm interior, color was sublime with the white top. Had 15 inch Keystone classics with Eagle STs. Had too much fun in that car! Until some bonehead left his midnight blue Buick parked in the road at night with no lights on!

first car was a 1970 VW bug 3 speed semi automatic (stick shift, no clutch!), given to a friend by his relative after it died on them. It was covered pea green latex house paint applied with a roller. While he sanded off the latex, I worked on the engine and within two weeks it was running fine and primer gray under clear coat, what wed call the “suede” look today, and this was mid 80′s! We shared the car for several months, until the fuel line rubbed through near the carb, and Poof! end of the gray bug.. First car that I owned on my own was a 70 Ford Torino GT, though by the time i got it (for $200) all the good gt parts had been scavenged and a 302 had replaced the 351, and it had lots of rust, but it was fun anyway, and didnt blow up…

My first vehicle was a 1985 GMC pickup truck. It was a 2wd long bed/short cab with a primer hood and fender since the previous owner(my uncle) smacked a tree with it, had the 4.3, it was a stickshift, and was a total POS. The transmission had some kind of internal problems, because I burned through 3 clutches in 6 months. The alternator blew up (literally blew up) a month after I got it, and only the right front brake caliper worked, all the others were frozen. Rumor had it that in high school for the yearbook, when they chose “best car” they threw the idea around for “worst car” and I was in the top 3 for that. At least it taught me how to disassemble and reassemble a Quadrajet.

I’m a freshmen at college now, but i have had a few cars throughout high school. When i turned 16, i got a 1990 Pontiac Grand Prix. It was sky blue with Konig rims and a spoiler of a mid-90′s Grand Prix.
After my dad sold that from under me, I then started to drive my parents 2002 Buick Rendevouz. Then, in my junior year, as a Chirstmas gift, my parents bought me the car I have now. Hand me down 1980 Ford Fairmont, I maintained it while my sister drove it before me so it’s was only fair that I get a free car. Four doors and a gutless 200ci inline six that took a quarter mile to hit 65 mph and would die if I tried spinning the tires on gravel.
