Project ANGRIER is Finally Done

By Mike Musto

AKA Mr. Angry

So, you want to build a custom car, huh? Well, let me just start by saying that you’d better do some research before you jump in head first. I get A LOT of people telling me that they are thinking about building a car, but in reality they have absolutely no concept of what it takes to actually do this. They think that the shiny red tool box in the corner of their garage is all they will need to make a SEMA show car. They’ve generally read some magazines about how someone built a car for $4,000 out of junkyard parts, a little rattle can paint and some upholstery work by their mom, and they think, "Hey, I can do this. I’ve got the skills, I got the drive, and I’ve got a red tool box!"

Oh, how wrong they are. Being a backyard mechanic is one thing, and by this I mean you’ve changed some brake pads, done some oil changes and maybe even installed a stereo or two. Being a true customizer is something totally different, as you are generally creating something from nothing. That means taking parts that were never meant to work together and making them work together. It’s a bitch and one that constantly bites back.

MR. ANGRY INC. finally took off the wraps on project "ANGRIER," and let me tell you something. It was a long road to get to this point–15 months to be exact–and all along the way things fought us. From simple electrical issues, to broken wheels, to suspension components, etc. Oh, and let’s not forget about the money, ALL the money. A good rule of thumb, if you decide to embark on a project, is figure out your budget then double it. Do this and you may come in on target.

All in all building a car is a truly rewarding experience, and if the outcome is what you want you will be thrilled in the end. Just keep in mind that the project will cost you more than just time and money. Don’t believe me? Ask anyone who’s ever done it.

Good luck people.

Very nice daytona there and the flat black look fits it nice but i have a few questions first wouldnt it look better with maybe a white stripe on the rear like alot of these cars had and Mike what happened to the charger, i hope its still being driven like it was on the show. Anyways nice ride and btw i have a 83 camaro too and whoever said the the nose looks like this car needs to have thier eyes examined or be face planted into the nose of a camaro.

Well in reading some of these comments on your Daytona, it’s no wonder why no one knew what I was talking about when I referenced the “wing warrior” to a CAPTION CONTEST a few months back. Both Dodge and Plymouth produced the same style cars, Dodge Daytona and the Plymouth Superbird, though Dodge hit the market 1st with it’s Daytona in 69 and Plymouth followed in 70. Both were terrors on the high bank speedways till FORD(go figure) called foul after they couldn’t keep up. Mopar couldn’t give those cars away people thought they were so damn ugly, but are now so heavily sought after. In short, that’s one bad ass “WINGED WARRIOR” MrAngry!!!…

Classy, and classic. Yeah those noses were a little on the ugly side, but they do exactly what they were meant to do. Keep the car on the ground and prevent drag. Much like myself, sometimes ugly is better! This is a work of art!

I know exactly what you mean by this article. I was once a backyard mechanic too. Then I got caught.(Just kidding). I built my 66 valiant painstakingly. It showed me that the main thing to have was tools. It cut my cost alot, and with the tools i started asking more questions and learned alot about how to use them. I now know how to work a CAD machine, sandblast, sodablast, weld, use a torch, torque wrench, and a whole bunch more. Sure, youre project always bites back but the bite marks teach you somethin’ new.

– I see the body of a roadrunner, the front clip of an 80s camaro, and the huge wing off a honda. –

My dear fellow.. do you actually know what a Road Runner looks like, or an 80’s Camaro for that matter… and how dare you mention a Honda! Good God man that’s blasphemy! (Although I do like Honda’s).

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I respect that… but just let me educate you on the Dodge Daytona as this is a production car. One of the more interesting chapters in technological history was the 1969 Dodge Daytona. This vehicle had a drag coefficient (cd) of just 0.28 (A modern Dodge Viper has a cd of over .5), and is better than most cars made today. It would have produced even less drag, if it weren’t for the tall spoiler (added to keep the rear wheels on the ground at high speeds). It set a 200 mph speed record (set by Buddy Baker on March 24, 1970, at 200.447 mph around Talladega) a speed record that held for 13 years, to be broken by about 1 mph in 1983.

Wow that is really ugly. Its like pieces of 3 different cars slapped together. I see the body of a roadrunner, the front clip of an 80s camaro, and the huge wing off a honda.

This is the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen. Are the Mr. Angry Inc. people the same ones who designed the new Knight Rider car? lol. Naw, I’m just joking! I respect what everybody builds and I’m sure that the person who built this car is happy with it, that’s what matters. What’s funny is: it could be the same car with big rims and there would be a shitload of racist comments. Hey Mike, congratulations on finishing your project. Seriously though, it is a acquired taste, just not mines. Throw some D’s on that bitch!

But I do like the Daytona, save for that wheel tire combo, but no hard feelings, I know how you New York people have tempers like wet dynamite.

How did I know Mr Angry was going to mouth off? I drive a 93 Dakota. Does that matter? Not in the slightest. What I mean is this: yeah, its extremely expensive to restore/build a total show car, especially when its something as rare as a Charger Daytona. Joe Schmoe building the 87 Camaro in his garage isn’t going to spend a trillion in parts and labor. Why would you put 3 peice wheels on this street legal race car anyway, I would go with 1 piece forged but… you know everything, so whatever. Not everybody is going to like what you do, if you can’t handle that maybe you shouldn’t post it all over the internet.

Magnificent! A sincere Congrats on completion, that’s gotta feel good! This man can build! He didn’t throw money at someone and say “build this!”, he did it himself! Anyone who can make a beast like the 68 handle like Mike has , has not only earned, but deserves respect, and now hes done it again with another awesome build! I still have my old red tool box, now it sits on top of a row of roll aways but we all had to start somewhere… Anyone who thinks installing a CAI makes them “tuners” needs to take a good look at Mikes work, might learn a thing or two, and get a dose of humility…I definitely agree with Mikes summary, but Id quadruple the budget of both time and money, and add a healthy dose of blood, sweat and tears, oh and allot of cursing. things dont always go smoothly, in fact, they rarely go smoothly, but that just makes it all the more rewarding in the end…

How could you break a wheel? That’s about the wierdest thing to sideline a car.

Too bad the nose on the thing is ass ugly. All the time and money put into that thing and you couldn’t come up with something that doesn’t burn the retinas?

Seems Mike’s head might not fit into the Charger anymore. Better look for a convertible next time.

Ditto on that.

Holy crap, have you ever got me pegged. From the Red Tool Box (visible in at least one picture) to the “I’ve changed brakes and installed stereos before”. The only difference is, I’m not looking for a show car. I’m going to take my rattle can paint job and my MacGyvered parts, and I’m going to proudly drive my 53 GMC to Home Depot and load it up with lumber and dirt when I’m done. The key for me is to enjoy the build (however long it takes), and enjoy driving something people don’t see every day, even if it’s not the shinest or straightest one around.

It’s no Angrier, but I like it.
