Lamborghini's October Surprise

By John Coyle

Editor

For the last few days, rumors have been swirling about the car Lamborghini intends to reveal at the Paris Auto Show early next month. The initial pic left a lot to the imagination, but the text which accompanied it—"It’s not just a new Lamborghini, it’s a new world"—got the automotive blogs buzzing. Well, the latest photo to emerge from Sant’Agata seems to confirm what many in the industry have speculated: the newest Raging Bull will be a front-engined four door. Since Ferrari basically already has a sports sedan—in the form of Maserati’s Quattroporte—and Aston Martin and Porsche are set to release their own models, it makes sense Lambo would want some of that market. We’ll post any new photos as soon as they surface, but what do you think about the idea of a Lamborghini four door? Hot or not?

Obviously Lambo is dabbling in the idea because there has been an intrest. Companies rarely put thousands of man hours and millions of dollars into something if there wasn’t the spark of intrest coming from somewhere.
Will it look good? Who knows. Maseratis look good but to me the Porsche 4 door car (Panamera I believe) looks horrible. Porsche did the Cayenne right but the car, ugh.
To Otto’s comment: The Gallardo has a AWD system that is rear biased.

it is what it is
there is a reason why most people cant buy these cars and it has nothin to do with other muscle cars, or sedans vs. coupes
this vehicle is just another way for lambo to make a paycheck
sure the concept may be uncool to some, but its just what you like personally.this isnt geared to young adults and the like.
things are always changing so you cant expect lambo to not come up with other ideas to keep themselves up with the market.what will everybody do if lambo starts a new electric vehicle. you guys are all gonna freak.
and so what if the front engine four-door is a flop. they will learn from that.i guarantee its still gonna have all the power and features of any lambo out today.im sure it will be improved on even more. but its not like they’re gonna throw this car right into production anyway. there is so many limiting factors that this vehicle’s one and only shining day may just be the day its revealed at the paris auto show and thats it.nobody can honestly say how things will turn out

Huge mistake which will turn to embarrassment for the Lamborghini.

“In order for a car to be classified as a Muscle Car, it MUST have 4 doors.”
Yeah….GTOs, Roadrunners, 442s, Mach 1s, were all 4 doors 100% WRONG!
The new Charger is a 4 door….not a bad sedan, but NOT a Muscle Car. They never should have diluted the “Charger” name.

Also, when your buying a car that costs thousands of $$$, and costs a fortune on things like gas, servicing etc. Who gives a flying fuck about high insurance? And that thing on the four doors, i have a ‘69 Mustang. That car is a muscle car. The new charger is dodge trying to hit all sectors of the market. Its an assholes muscle car

dude you are smoking crack, what muscle car is four doors, corvettes are 2 doors, mustangs are two doors cuda’s are 2 doors uhhh chargers were 2 doors only by todays standards are muscle cars four doors, like the new charger.

Chris

For anyone who never paid attention a few decades ago, or even today:

In order for a car to be classified as a Muscle Car, it MUST have 4 doors. Mind you these are Exotics, BUT the concept that 4 door cars ARE fast still stands. Hence why it has been deemed that the Corvette is in fact, a sports car, and not a muscle car. I think Lambo knows what they are doing and it is a well though out plan. Who wouldn’t want a 4 door Lambo?!? Its still a Lambo, No? Besides, won’t insurance technically be cheaper now? Its legally a Sedan, not a Coupe!

From the looks of it, id rather get a 4door corvette. Not a bad idea, but it should come with optional 4 doors. It should be a 4 seater 2 door to start off, and if you want the extra 2 doors then they can be added, or something. I hope it doesnt look as stupid as I think it will look. Those pictures show nothing except a front end and rims that look stolen from a corvette. I guess Lamborghini got tired of seeing all of those vettes smoking the gallardo’s and murcielagos on youtube. BUt seriously, the world is ending, who gives a shit about a 4door Lambo. Not I.

WHAT ON EARTH IS HAPPENING? … A 4-DOOR LAMBORGHINI SEDAN?

I can’t believe the trend that these super exotic manufacturers are heading. Come on, people, if someone can afford even the “entry-level” Lamborghini, the Gallardo, which already costs over $300k CDN, I am damn sure that person can afford a nice sedan like the BMW 7-Series, Audi A8, MB S-Class, Jaguar XJ, or even a Bentley as a 2nd vehicle, if not third, fourth, … vehicle. Also, do you really want to strap your newborn child into a vehicle capable of speeds close to 200MPH if not more? …

Coincidentally, I happened to go and check out the 2008 Maserati Quattroporte sedan this past weekend and parked next to it in the showroom was the all-new 2009 Maserati GranTurismo S coupe, which I love and think looks much better than the Quattroporte.

A Lamborghini or Ferrari should remain a 2-seater ULTIMATE EXOTIC SPORT CAR, not a FAMILY SEDAN for the super wealthy. If the lottery comes my way tonight, I sure won’t buy a 4-DOOR LAMBORGHINI, I would buy a Murciego Roadster as my weekend “toy”, and a MERCEDES-BENZ S550 4Matic as my family sedan.

Even better what if the concept four door had the DOHC V-8 with a twin screw supercharger with an electro magnetic clutch that can phase out and under drive the supercharger so that at high rpm you will be directly connected making 12 psi but anything below 4000rpm would be at a 45% and below underdriven zone making around 4-6psi. It could be cool and optimize fuel economy. Under the supercharger could be a air 2 liquid intercooler with its own resivoir that would recorrect itself using vaccuum readings from an ECU sensor for manifold and intercooler pressure. That could surely make 680 hp around 5800rpm with some 272/272 duration camshafts perhaps with around 114 degree lobe seperation or more? Aluminum cast block for lightweight durability, around 329 ci displacement should be good, cast knife edge cut crankshaft, 10 qt oil pan for lower g force work load on the moto,-internal sump and magnetic pulse filter screen to trap debree, aluminum cast heads, ceramic coated pistons- forged pistons maybe with poly skirt coating, around 8.2:1 compression ratio, Multi layer steel gaskets about .055 inch gasket, ram intake incorporated into the hood with carbon fiber intake components, 90mm throttle body, distributorless ignition and direct port dual spray pattern injectors, iridium spark plugs, around 9mm plug wires, stainless ceramic coated exhaust manifolds, two 3inch collectors into 8 inch extension and cross over into single central pipe into catalytic converter and then borla style single 3inch fed 96db dual outlet stainless tip 3inch center exhaust. Paddle shifted 8 forward gear variable splitter auto transmission, 2.00:1 first split into 1.52:1, 1.86:1 second split into 1.41:1, 1.76 third split into 1.34:1, and fourth 1.52:1 split into 1.15:1 and reverse 2.12:1. The splits seem high but this motor has alot of torque at low end so you can cruise in split fourth at 2400 rpm with a 1.15:1 at 70mph. P.S. I think you should post more pictures like this, of cars not out yet and have people write a comment on the drivetrain it should have. It could be a contest- 180 words max, 110 words min, engine trans rear(s) and capabilities. Email me back please. -Bye

I agree with the guys who say a four door can be fast. Even a big car can be fast. So why cant a four door lambo be fast.Someone said we don’t know the displacement yet. It made me think of some of my own. What if it has a DOHC V-8 with distributorless ignition, direct port fuel injection making 420hp @ 5300rpm and 381.4 lb/ft torque at 3650rpm- naturally aspirated and behind it a paddle shifted automatic 8speed variable transaxle, all independent suspension around, inboard rear discs around 16 inches and a curb weight of only 3621.8lbs. With all the power to the wheels and awd’s advantage in traction we are talking a real 0-60 in low 4 sec range car. who else is with me?

Anonymous
Sep 24, 2008 at 2:56 pm

“, imagine you talking to your friends and your like yeah my car is fast and you turn to show it to them and its a 4 door, there probabaly gonna be like yeah right, that big long thing” Anthonywf

I get what your saying and you sorta right on this. People who can afford these cars are looking at image. And trust me a 4 door Lamborghini will probably be as well recieved (if not larger) than any two door, just because its way off scale. Can you imagine how sleek and luxurious this car will look. But now on your point about it being slow. That’s probably just a false statement. I mean we don’t know the displacement on this thing yet. But there is nothing saying that since a car is large in size that it is slow.

Just as a point look at the Mercedes Benz S65 AMG. Its 5.5L Bi-turbo V12 makes 604bhp & 738ft.lbs of torque and can go from zero-60 in 4.5 seconds. Oh and did I mention it ways 5035lbs, it weights 471lbs more than the Acura MDX suv. How fast do you wanna go? I am probably safe to say that if this four door comes out you won’t be seeing it on youtube being beat by a VW R32..lol

“personally, i think its all about what people want. supply and demand…” ALEX

Alex your completely correct. People who buy these cars want something to carry friends in to the latest clubs or out for a evening on Sunset blvd. They already have all the other supercars the could ever want so a 4-door Lambo is just what the doctor asked for. People are buying the Porsche SUV, Land Rover Superchareged and the Masaratti like crazy around here. Rich people want a 4 door Lambo and I was surprised that it took this long to come out. I’ve seen Paris driving her Mercedes SLR Mclaren around town, and I’m sure she would like something to carry a few more friends.

A four door Lambo? Not saying it couldn’t look nice, but it’s kinda like sticking a Ford engine into a Corvette. It’s both unexpected AND out of place.

Not saying either way until I see more of it though, it might just be pretty cool in the end :)

WHAT? a 4 door lambo? i cant picture it, lambo’s are fast and it just seems like if they make a 4 door it wont be fast anymore, i mean i know it WILL still be fast but its all about the appearance, imagine you talking to your friends and your like yeah my car is fast and you turn to show it to them and its a 4 door, there probabaly gonna be like yeah right, that big long thing, now if its a 2 door, there probabaly gonna be like yeah that shit just looks fast! get what im saying?

Think about it. If lambo did a four door front engine it would be awesome in my opinion. I get this vision of a soccer mom driving one and blazing past a skyline or somthing. Besides woudn’t a four door lambo be cool to see on the track with all the two doors. It doesn’t really matter what they build but how they build it. The bug eyed subaru WRX’s and evo’s are four doors and they can do it. Why can’t one of the world’s leading supercar builders try it out.

i think it will be exoticas its brother models and take it to extreme but 4 doors hmmm no chance. 4 doors are family car and 2 doors are adrenaline and thats what lambo should concentrate on. no matter what lambo die hard are high speed extreme lovers. keep lambo a lambo not a boring family sedan

Okay, I bet a 4-door lambo would smoke anything on the road (besides a Saleen S7 and a couple of other cars). But for a 2-door sports car manufacturer to come out with a basic sedan that has more bells and whistles than a loaded 747, I think that will broaden people’s admiration on 4 door sports cars like Evolutions, STIs, RS4s, M5s, 300 SRT8s, Charger SRT8s, S-class Mercedes cars, and others. And if anyone thinks the S-class Mercedes is luxury only, then tell that to the S65 AMG…6.5L twin turbo V12…604hp…Hell yeah man.

I’m not sure why everyone is so down on these Italian manufacturers. Especially Lamborghini. I say good on them for taking a risk and going with a four door. Do we not remember that Lamborghini started out making tractors before they moved to sports cars. Porsche has done the same thing. Even dabbled in the SUV market, to everyones surprise, came out with reasonably successful numbers beeing sold worldwide. They are now set to release a four door also. Lamborghini is just following trends and making the marque more accessible and cater to a wider market. Lamborghini were even ahead of the SUV/4WD game years ago with the LM002. Sure, wasn’t as successful as their sports cars but they were willing to take a chance, which I think is missing in a lot of car manufacturers today, who are more worried about making money instead of investing in passion.

AJ Whitsett
Sep 23, 2008 at 3:41 am

Some people need to broaden the minds, horizons, and spectrums. For Lambo to come out with a front engine four door would be hot. Its no different than a two door SUV with a twin turbo engine. But anyways it would once again break the mold. Car manufacturers look at ways to be different and still attract buyers and some people want to be able to take the kids around in a Lambo. I hope it is hot as hell cuz if it is count me in for one.

If someone wanted a sedan, wouldn’t they just buy a $20,000 family car and get it over with?

Christos
Sep 21, 2008 at 4:35 pm

Now I understand that the engine is more than likely in the front of the car, due to the slit behind the wheel,, but what form do we actually think this is going to be in. I think it is safe to assume a four door, as even the RS6 will not be able to properly fit the demographic targeted by efforts from aston and porsche, but what kind of four door? I think a “sedan” is basically out of question, as my mind struggles to inagine what a lamborghini sedan would even look like, not to mention these pictures. I am thinking this will be more of a four door coupe (like the CLS), or even a front-engined two-doored four-seater GT (Like the bentley GT). Either way, I am expecting to see something more reminicent of a “shooting brake” design. Firstly, take a look at that flat bumper-like piece above the exhaust. It would make sence that lamorghini’s design language would dictate the whole back of the car taper back to that point, not to mention the aerodynamic advantages that would add.

I am thinking this will look more like a bristol fighter, only going down the “stealth” route dictated by the Reventon. So perhaps we are looking at the bastard-child of a Bristol Fighter, and a Spada Codatronica.

I am expecting a front-engined, comfortable (ride height), GT, with a tapered back, and four seats… only one key question remains… how many doors?

As you may recall, Lamborghini has already done a four door(the LM) and a front engine four passenger(their first car), so this is not virgin territory for them. But, if you argue that Ferrari has a sport sedan in the form of the Quattroporte, can’t you say the same thing about the Audi S8 or RS6?

Harrison
Sep 20, 2008 at 1:03 am

I think it would be sweet because it’s got all the Lambo goodies but with 4 doors so more people can ride with you when you hit 3 digit speeds, which is always fun.

Plus it’s a Lamborghini, so thats always cool too.

Not. Supercar makers should stay out of the saloon/SUV market. If I’m going to drive a Porsche/Ferrari/Lamborghini it’s certainly not going to be a four door or SUV. Hell, I don’t even want a four door in the real people class. A sports car is two doors, no matter how you want to spin your latest copy of every other automaker out there.
