Hyundai Genesis 3.8 vs. Nissan Maxima 3.5 SV: Which Would You Choose?

By Rob

Editor-in-Chief

This week’s Showroom Showdown features two fast yet reasonably-priced four doors. Both cars are new for 2009. Both cost $32k. Both have 290 hp V6 powerplants. Weight and mpg are comparable. The Genesis, however, is RWD, while the Maxima is FWD. So, which would you choose?

id choose maxima over the genesis.if ia am going to go get a v8 four door it might as well be the g8 gt.and plus in my opinion the genesis is nothing but a car that has the best attributes from other cars on it lol.i mean look at that grill=s550,shape=g37(4-door) or the lexus gs.and not only that its a “HYUNDAI”.MAXIMA ALL THE WAY CVT

Furthermore, members are more appreciative of the softer ride the Genesis offers. However! I must admit that there are SOME complaints that the rear of the sedan is too soft-sprung – and that over some potholes and large bumps, the rear hits the bumpstops. There’s actually a poll about the suspension here: http://genesisowners.com/hyundai-genesis-forum/showthread.php?t=768&highlight=poll and more discussion here: http://genesisowners.com/hyundai-genesis-forum/showthread.php?t=601&highlight=suspension

Both the new Nissan Maxima and the new Hyundai Genesis Sedan are excellent vehicles! However, I’m more into the luxury experience – so hands down, I’d choose the Genesis.. Plus, I like the power of a V8. It’s surprising how many people are moving from top tier luxury brands into a Hyundai! At http://www.genesisowners.com you’ll find ex-owners of recent model Lexus, BMW and Infiniti vehicles! See and believe….

Hyundai’s reliability has been on a major upswing over the last 5 years while Nissan’s has dropped. Hyundai has been repeatedly rated above Nissan over the last couple of years.
ANSWER: Genesis

Why was the Genesis rated against a Lexus, because Lexus is the perceived benchmark at this time. Reviews have usually placed it the same as the Lexus but for much less.
ANSWER: Genesis

Resale value is driven by market perception. Considering some of the narrow minded responses on here, its going to be a few more years still for Hyundai. Their resale has been improving but its still below the top three Japanese. So if your only going to keep your car for 2-3 years then no Hyundai is not for you.
ANSWER: Maxima

Someone talked about warranties. Nissan’s is definitely sub-par to Hyundai’s. GM’s warranty was mentioned as being equal, when it is not.
If you look ONLY at the powertrain mileage then yes. Both are 100k BUT GM expects you to go thru that 100k in 5 years while Hyundai gives you 10 years. Ya sure the powertrain is a critical thing, but that is not the whole picture. Bumper-to-bumper counts as well. GM’s is 3y-36k, Nissan’s is 3y-36k, while Hyundai’s is 5y-60k. Significant difference in favor of Hyundai there. And for anyone who mentions the non-transferable part of Hyundai’s warranty. The powertrain simply reverts to 5y-60k to coincide with the B2B warranty.
ANSWER: Genesis

So reliabilty, cost, warranty, and RWD
ANSWER: Genesis

Resale
ANSWER: Maxima

I’ll take the Genesis, thank you.

haha, that will guy is just pure retarded. Any of the 4th gen camaros or new ones would absolutely destroy both of these cars. It will get just as good gas mileage, out perform, and be more reliable, with less of a cost for a repair if it tends to happen. Keep to your ricer logic.

It realy is a tough choice even though through tons of research i have found Hyundai ratings on reliability on the upswing and the fact thats its rwdrive with a V8 option i would still have to go with the tried and true nissan until i see some more changes with hyundai like the value of the car going down hill as soon as the keys are handed over, id still wait a few more years on this one.

the v6 genesis doesn’t touch the maxima, and although i havent driven the v8 genesis, i have driven both of the v6’s. Hands down maxima, so easy to drive but i’d wish they’d put the gtr’s tranny in it. o and i dont kno bout the v8 but try powersliding in the genesis, doesn’t feel like it rwd unless its wet out. however both cars are great=] don’t expect to get alot of hp out of either tho

Sep 27, 2008 at 12:30 am

as far as reliability goes nissan is not the most reliable, a nissan breaks and get ready for a big fat repair bill.

Hyundais are very reliable no a days, and far more reliable now than nissan. people here are stupid.
do better research next time. the genesis is no econobox junk car here, this is a fine machine with a v6 motor that has been very reliable and problem free since it came out.

the genesis all the way. nissan style has been getting worse and worse, and those headlights just top off the worse in it.

got to go with hyundai on this one one, hyundai is no longer making crap, i don’t understand why people here are so negative and ignorant. 100,000 mile waranty, RWD power, all the luxury you want.

both cars have 290hp on the v6, both cars are $32,000
RWD is funner to drive than FWD, the genesis is the winner here.

hyundai may of been trash in the past but thats how every company was in its first years, this ain’t the 90’s anymore.

Shit!!! For 3K more, I could roll down to the Mercedes dealership and scoop me up a brand new C300! But I know, it’s between these two. Maxima has Nissan reputation, Genesis has Hyundai’s reputation. Not too much of a brain teaser! Maxima wins!

MAXIMA
Sep 26, 2008 at 2:33 pm

you guys are supid as hell if you would buy fuckin hyundai for 32k so what it has 378hp is still fuckin hyundai MAXIMA all the way stupid americans stop thinking about hp and think reliabilty for long term. americans are retarted

Maxima.
However, if it were the V8 Genesis, it’d be a different story.

I’m going to do like all of the other idiots on here do, and stray away from the actual question and say something totally off subject.

i’d take thuh goddern new cuhmaro over deese pieces o inport junks. gimme dat v8!

Stupid people.

wow
Sep 26, 2008 at 3:54 am

people are really stupid, they would rather chose hp over reliability. Common this is the first piece of crap hyundai has built thats actually considered luxury.

Sep 26, 2008 at 2:35 am

The Genesis of course. RWD, and the grille looks pretty aggressive. Not to mention that Hyundai is offering 100,000 mile warranties on all their cars nowadays.

Mike
Sep 26, 2008 at 2:29 am

Why not buy a G8 GT? Faster and cheaper, warranty compares to the Hyundai.

sure
Sep 26, 2008 at 2:08 am

neither, both platforms are flawed, nissan is better looking of the two with probably nicer interior, but fwd sucks balls. and the only thing the hyundai has going for it is the engine and rwd. both suck

Matt
Sep 26, 2008 at 1:15 am

the genesis also comes with a 4.6 v8, i cant believe im saying this but i would take the hyundai, but only the v8, if it was the v6 i would consider both, but the v8 genesis has like 375 rwhp

Sep 25, 2008 at 9:24 pm

i like the genesis all the way around, and i agree with andy, not diggin the headlights on the nissan. however, i can’t justify dishing out 32 large for a hyundai. as far as someone else comparing hyundai to lexus, let’s think about that. when hyundai was introduced to the U.S. they were marketed as an inexpensive, no frills brand with the cheapest vehicles in the country. Lexus, as I remember it, has always been set as the luxury division of Toyota. I give Hyundai credit for trying to change their destiny, but for 32000 and steep depreciation rates, i have to go maxima.

genesis coupe for sure those cars are bad, especailly the sema build.
they got rid of the tiburon hopefully this will be a better production for them, the tiburon was somewhat popular.

Sep 25, 2008 at 4:27 pm

Since Hyundai’s arent that dependable, I’ll take the Shmaxima. Now if the Genesis creates a good track record for Hyundai, I’d take it simply because it’s RWD…Nissan should’ve made the new Maxima RWD because at that point, I dont think there’d be any competition…

sigh……. i honestly lost alot of loyalty for hyundai when i bought a elantra new in 05 just problem after problem. but i heard they arent that bad. honestly the maxima probably because it will last for ever and be super badass rock some 22s and some soloX’s and your in for some fun.

brian
Sep 25, 2008 at 2:08 pm

well they are both hot cars. the price is definately right on both, and the offered packages are superb for their respective classes, but there is no substitute for the feeling of driving a rear wheel drive car, so I would have to go with the genesis

Franxou
Sep 25, 2008 at 1:53 pm

I’m sold to nissan, so I’ll go for the 4DSC maxima.
Plus based on my experience with local hyundai dealers, there is no way I’d buy a hyundai in my area.
Q. for others who have dealed with a hyundai dealership : Are the dealers stealers everywhere or just in Québec(Canada)?

Maffew
Sep 25, 2008 at 1:42 pm

my brand loyalty is truly being tested…both cars are doing a lot right, but my beloved nissan fails on FWD. therefore, sadly, I must choose the genesis… in two years, when I can buy it for $3500.

The Hyundai Genesis will be the start of changing people’s perception of the brand like Lexus did way back in the days. The Sonata is already doing that. With that the resale value will go up eventually. If Lexus did, why can’t Hyundai.

Nissans looks have been declining alot lately, the maxima is FUGLY from the front. Genesis is RWD and looks better, huyndai have come a long way.

The only thing going for the Genesis is its RWD. Nice ride too! But the Maxima has proven itself over the years and I love the Nissan technology so it’s still the Max for me.

Sep 24, 2008 at 11:40 pm

Well RWD ftw, but in this case its a hyundai, its a sedan, so probably not built for speed handling and what not, so If i wanted luxury I’d go maxima plus it looks sexy, and yea for RWD id go g37, even the older G35 are better…

I dont usually look at sedans exepts sports ones, nway maybe u should try Genesis Coupe against G35 or something of tht matter
peace.

Genisis all the way!!! I’ve noticed that Hyundai has come up in a major way in the past six years or so. Watch their line up and stock soar in the years to come. I really look forward to the Hyundai Genisis sport coupe!

The Genesis, I really like both (maxima looks sportier though) but the genesis is a bargain these days.

James
Sep 24, 2008 at 7:54 pm

I’d go with the Maxima, the only downside being the WWD (Wrong Wheel Drive.) The Genesis is considerably heavier and softer/plusher – it’s more of a luxury car, and I tend to like my cars to go around corners. I won’t deny that the Genesis represents fantastic value for the money, but that certainly doesn’t make it interesting to an enthusiast.

Then again, at least the Genesis has a real transmission. CVT, ugh.

Josh
Sep 24, 2008 at 7:46 pm

Im going to choose the Maxima, because I could never go to a Hyundai dealership and seriously look at one of their vehicles.

Son Of a Beach
Sep 24, 2008 at 7:41 pm

Based on resale value alone, there really is no choice, the Maxima wins. The Maxima also has better vehicle dynamics, making it more pleasurable to drive, and less of an appliance like the Genesis. Plus, I think the Maxima looks sharper. It’s too bad that it is front wheel drive, but Nissan has that covered with the G35/37.

louis
Sep 24, 2008 at 6:48 pm

I’ve always loved the Maximas. The brand new ones are always hot. But I’m goign to bite the bullet and go for the Genesis. If you ever been in one, it has all the luxury packages of a 40k even 50k vehicle. Its just that nice.
