Since most places have a curfew anyways, why can’t the police set it up to be like a rally? Close off a certain street every night and let them do what they’re going to do. Problem solved. America needs to stop trying to protect the people from themselves. Street racing will never stop, so why not control it? Tracks don’t do shit, it’s completely different. I love the track, but it’s not realistic to go there every night, plus you can’t hope to compete realistically unless you have a 100,000 muscle car. At least on the street I can race civics and the atmosphere is better. I mill around talking to people and meet contacts more then I bother racing anyways. People go to this organized street racing for the community, something the track doesn’t really have.

I live in wisconsin and we have alot of areas for street racing. The cops aren’t even around half the time. I have all the things necessary when it comes to street racing and plus didn’t they have any look outs for the pigs.

Here is a helpful hint to those who do not want their car impounded. If you drive a tuner and happen to come upon a street race in the middle of the night, just turn around and find another route. A few extra minutes driving can save your car from the impound. Sounds simple to me. If you are a willing spectator at a street you deserve your punishment. Encouraging illegal behavoir is called aiding and abetting by the way…

If they were so worried about illegal street racing, then maybe they would use some of the revenue from ticketed racers to build a LEGAL drag strip and capitalize off that. Won’t prevent it but sure as hell would help.

I think that the city should build us race tracks and charge us to get in like $10 or so. They should make it look like the streets and have a drag race place that looks like the streets aswell. It will look cool. I know we appearantly have those already and iv been on the track with a Porsche 911 its fun stuff. But there should be more of those track at least have them within 200km from one another.

I will have to go with the majority here. Yes the TV footage is a bit over the top, but street racing does need to be significantly decreased. Here in Mansfield OH we used to have frequent races down the main street through town. A couple years ago a teenager died and the police cracked down HARD after that. I like the fact that they are impounding even some spectators cars at these races. As said earlier, if you sit there and just watch something illegal and do NOTHING then you are just as responsible. Personally if I want to watch a race I volunteer at the track, I get to help out and get free tickets for the weekend. Much safer, more fun, completely legal.

While I do feel that street racing is dangerous and should be kept to the track. I think it is ridiculous that the spectators were fined. Whether you agree with it or not “tuners” are targeted in California as a means to create revenue for the government, that is a fact. i myself have actually reced twice, i live in a town of about 600 people, theres nothign around, there used to be a track that i ran at but then it closed and its over 3 hours to any track now for me, so a couple times we got way out into the country, drive up and down the road a few times to make sure there wont be any problems, kids, mennonites on the side of the road or anything,
with actual thinking and planning, this stuff has been goin on in my area since my parents ran there too.. not ONE person has ever been hurt because we arent idiots,

Rob, they do, it’s called Open Drag night. Find an official NHRA drag strip anywhere in your area and I bet they have an Open Drag Night at least once a week. Take whatever you want down there, your Supra, your Integra, or your grandma’s ‘92 Grand am. You can get official times for your ride and there’s the proper safety personnel and equipment if (and when) something goes wrong. Racing is not a safe sport. Not every drag run goes perfectly. There are crashes and when they do happen there’s emergency teams right there to take care of it. Who knows how long it’s going to take an ambulance to whereever these illegal races are being held. There’s nothing wrong with taking it off the streets and putting it down on a real race track. That way no one gets hurt who doesn’t deserve it.

People in high places think too horribly about it, like if someone is G-O-I-N-G to die if the police didn’t stop the races. No, I’ve been numerous nights, 6 hours and more, where there hasn’t been any collisions or injury. Also, the media needs to stop making it seem like something bad will inevitably happen. If that’s the case then alcohol should be stripped off the shelves because something bad will inevitably happen with it. The governments of our cities, counties, and states should do what they do with alcohol, make ways and locations for it to be consumed safely, make it readily available, charge a bit, and people will go. Here in Vegas people always go to Midnight Mayhem at the drag strip, lines up the ass and hella money made for the race track.

For me, it is harder to go to the track since they closed L.A.C.R. I now have to drive more than 100 miles to go to a track. They ARE idiots for not taking it to a track that was 10 minutes away. I’d rather be on a track anyhow. Atleast on a track you can get your times and even bracket race if you want. Not to mention that you can win a race just by reaction time and driver error…lol. Wish they would build a new track out here near me. It would stop most of the street racing that is going on.

And this “by-stander” law has been effective for quite some time now here in California. I believe it started because people in San Diego would race in a fucking TUNNEL and when the car lost control lots of people got hurt and some even died. So yes watching races its illegal. There are more drag facilities in Southern California per capita than any place in the U.S. and still they got busted. No insurance, no safety barriers, no medical or safety teams or contingency plans. Just lots of no-brain egos.

I agree that street racing is a bad idea and should instead be on a track, but now is it illegal to watch a race? If you see someone commit a murder does that make you an accomplice to the murder? No it does not. I cant really say I never street raced before but I stopped for good three years ago after three buddies of mine where in a bad crash (not racing by the way) and it kind of gave me a shock to the system. In my eyes the racers got what hey deserved but the spectators just got a kick in the ass for no good reason. Just another example of a government agency looking to make a quick buck on middle class yet again.

The Auto Club Raceway is like ten minutes from that spot. They’re not there because they don’t have a place to race. I’d say that most of them are there specifically because it *is* illegal – that’s the whole appeal.

Consider the following stats, compiled from a variety of national and state transportation agencies, and it’s easy to see the answer is to take it to the track.

In 2001, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that police listed street racing as a factor in 135 fatal crashes. The total was up from 72 street-racing-related fatalities reported in 2000.
According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, more than 800 citations for illegal street racing were issued in 2001.

In San Diego, where the street racing problem has been termed “epidemic,” 16 deaths and 31 injuries were directly related to illegal street racing in 2001. The city’s attorney’s office prosecuted 147 illegal street racing cases in 1999, 161 in 2000, and 290 in 2001.

In Florida in 2001, 7,216 citations were issued for racing on the highway.

In 1999, the Florida Department of Highway and Safety for Motor Vehicles reported 28 accidents related to illegal street racing, with 2 fatalities and 27 injuries. In 2000, the agency reported 39 racing accidents, with 1 fatality and 55 injuries. In 2002, there were 48 racing accidents, 1 fatality, and 60 injuries.

According to the NHTSA, motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death for people between the ages of 16 and 20.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says 5,749 teens died in the United States from motor vehicle crash injuries in 1999.
Nationwide statistics show that 49 people are injured for every 1,000 who participate in illegal street racing.

As a result, city and state ordinances have been issued regarding illegal street racing. Though laws vary, here are some penalties faced by street racers:

You can be arrested and have your car impounded for 30 days.
If convicted of street racing or aiding and abetting a street race, you can be imprisoned for up to three months and fined up to $1,000.

Spectators are subject to penalties as well.

Your driver’s license can be revoked.

Your car insurance may be cancelled or the rates dramatically increased.

Cars in and around illegal street races are often issued equipment violations.

ALL OF THE ABOVE causes all of our insurance rates to increase.

i say instead of busting these kids for something you know they will do anyways, JUST GIVE THEM A PLACE TO RACE!

so it’s illegal to watch cars go straight now?

My friend got busted a couple of years ago on the same raid at the same place! After 1 year in prison and another of community service (cleaning freeways) he stoped. This is not the first time they do it, difference is that they televised it this time.

of course the media overplays this event by saying “luckily, the race was stopped before anyone was killed” as if death is inevitable at every street race…although i strongly disagree with street racing, media coverage on these things makes anyone who works on their cars look like a street racer…pretty lame
