What Car Mags Do You Read?
By Ron
aka WayTooFurious
John’s comment the other day about print being dead or dying got me thinking about the car magazines that I buy. It’s true that newspaper and magazine circulation has been shrinking, but like anything, the pick of the crop always survives. And really, if you’re going to spend your hard-earned money on car magazines they may as well be good ones, right? Being a one-eyed Mopar fan, I subscribe to Mopar Muscle and Mopar Action. Both are always informative and have a lot of tech articles, but I’m probably going to drop my subscription to Action because I prefer the editorial style of Muscle. Also, because I’m a car nut, I do occasionally stray to the dark side and read about other makes, and for this reason I can often be seen browsing the pages of general-purpose mags Muscle Car Review and Car Craft. Those are my top choices—what are yours?

I’ve read just about everything laying on the hopper tank at work. I think there are a couple “Automotive” mags on there I’ve read at least a few times over.

P.S.
I used to buy car magazines back in my high school years, just for the fact that I was trying to learn the basics (which is what most magazines show) about engines and all of that stuff. However once I got reliable learning sources I didn’t see the need for this magazines anymore! They always have the same car with different paint jobs on the cover!

I subscribe to Hot Rod because, well, it’s the best magazine in the world. I used to subscribe to Car and Driver, but I dropped it because I don’t really like the editorial style any more. I prefer Motor Trend, now. I pick up Mopar Muscle at the news stand whenever I can. Also, I like to get Corvette Enthusiast and Corvette magazine whenever I can. To fuel the European side of my love for cars, I always look through the new issue of eurotuner when Its at barnes and noble, and if it has an interesting BMW feature, I’ll buy it. I also occasionally buy Bimmer magazine, and sometimes Performance BMW mag. Although it’s insanely expensive, and features mostly british cars, it’s an OK magazine…
.
I guess that covers all the bases for me… I buy others, but that’s all that I remember at the moment.

Nes pretty much summed it up. For any one who hunts, buy a how to hunt big bucks and you will see the same photo on the cover that was on there 15 times in the last 20 years. Same for car mags. For those of us who have been around since the 60’s we all know that for the most part the how to articles just keep repeating themselves. You can pick up the latest copy of (Insert name) magazine and look up “How to rebuild your (insert engine) and get 400 Horsepower.” Then if you just happen to have the same magazine edition from 10 years ago it will be almost word for word. About the only thing you can get out of the average car mag is the latest photos of the newest rides but for the most part looking for good technical reports is a waste of time since only time will give good results after years of TTC. (testing, tuning and crashing.) Any or all of the above can be found on the Internet for free IF you are dealing with writers who have the proper credits/expertise to their name and not some know-it-all.
Before the Internet anyone with any thing going on for them would actually just pick up the phone, call Peterson Publication and ask for the editor of the perspective magazine and tell them what information we were looking for. They were always more than happy to oblige and if you were willing to wait a few days they would mail you all the technical articles including specs, product reviews and so on all at no charge. Considering how many magazines they owned they had the biggest data base of anyone. When Mr Peterson passed away all that went out the window.
