Twin Engine Lupo
By Rob Einaudi
Editor-in-Chief
Some dude in Croatia decided to stuff two VR6 motors into a humble VW Lupo, and he’s been updating a thread on VWVortex with a ton of pics to document the build. As you might imagine, two engines creates multiple problems opportunities, but it looks like he’s been able to make the most of them, with plenty of ingenious fabrication work along the way. Don’t believe this could even work? Check out the 20+ page thread on VWVortex and watch the video of the car on its first test run.

Now, how many of us remember the “Hurst Hairy Oldsmobile?” (google it)

Probably would work.. SOmeone already did that with a Hyundai Tiburon a while back. . Does nice burnouts. But you would need some sort of engine management master ECU to keep things in sync..

twin engine cars are pretty awesome when pulled off right. The most crazy one I ever saw was the fully functional life size version of Hot Wheels “Twin Mill”. I see alot of this stuff at the county fair truck/tractor pulls too, not to forget the few crazy show off drag cars. Never dreamed of rally racing though, but it sounds like a great idea, even if it is a little complex.

same thing was done to an Audi TT a few years ago.

I read about and saw videos of a twin engine Tiburon. It was in Sport Compact Car’s first Ultimate Street Car Challenge. That thing was pretty crazy…
Also, I know a guy that was working on putting 2 motor cycle engines into the back of some kind of car (didn’t get enough details about the project to provide any more), but what he was going to do was to have each engine drive 1 rear wheel. I believe he’s still working on it and troubleshooting, but I’m not sure… Either way, that’s a hell of an engineering challenge, and I give anyone who pulls it off props…

Twin engined cars aren’t anything new, so I certainly believe it’ll work in the Lupo. The first twin engined car I ever saw in person was a CRX back in the 80’s, which apparently was a Car and Driver project, but the owner lived in Coronado at the time and I got to check it out up close. The guy even had appropriate plates, they read “SINCHRO”.

Also, there was a guy a while back on the DSM forums that was building a twin engined Talon using a pair of 4G63 turbos. There were pix of it at a car show, but I don’t remember seeing any videos of it in action.
I wish this guy luck! That’s a hell of an engineering project! Personally, I would have satisfied myself with dropping the VR6 in the back and making something a bit nastier than the Aygo Crazy out of it.

Several companies have done similar things for the Pikes Peak rally. I would like to see how it handles at the track though.

over here in germany, we have been doing this for years. my cousin did that with is golf back in 2000. the way he did it is hard to describe but i do know that the clutch(s)and drivetrains, and throttles were somehow combined and switching gears was a bitch!!!!! but he did manage to run 1/4 miles in the upper nines. another advantage he had was he reduced as much weight as possible a since the there was a engine in the back it made for perfect weight distribution!!!!
