Lambo Doors for the Smart? Should I Go For It?
By Ryan Porter
Smart Car Dork
Now, I’ve never actually operated a set of vertical doors, but I must admit that they have always been in the back of mind. So now I have a set of Vertical Doors kit sitting in my apartment, but I’m getting cold feet. The girlfriend says she won’t be seen in it with them, I’m not entirely convinced I’d want to be seen in it for longer than a week, and I don’t know if I have the energy to install them. What should I do?

Vertical Doors inc. kits are ok Ryan. I live 30 minutes away from their headquarters and I’ve seen some demos they do on the parking lot. And most kits do allow you to just swing the door open without having to lift the door, so maybe your girlfriend is not going to have a problem if you have that kit. And the guy saying that the struts don’t work or whatever just got a crappy job done because I’ve seen cars that have it for years and nothing bad happens at all.

I wouldn’t put the kit on the Smart, especially if you plan on selling it soon. Go ahead and keep the kit for your next project vehicle and hope your girl can live with them!

A good vertical door kit will still open normally too. you don’t have to lift them up to open the door. But I’d say no go. Maybe if it was still 1999.

i had them on one of my cars a few years ago, and i won’t ever put them on a car again unless they are a LSD kit. Any kit isn’t a good idea for every day driving the struts, no matter what the companies say, won’t last in everyday conditions. the reason why i say i will only run a LSD kit is because they far and away allow the greatest amount of fitment adjustment, most other kits no matter what you do the door won’t fit properly. that is just my 2 cents.

if they are the dual hinges that open vertically and normally, i’d say hell yes and do it. but if they’re strictly vertical doors, i think i have to say no.

Most of ‘em are gaudy, but a smart car could pull it off.
I mean, it already looks pretty goofy, might as well get the doors goin’.

If your gut tells you to get ‘em, and YOU want them, GET THEM.
I think when it comes to mods, it’s like painting or other art. It’s using technology and artistry to blend performance, function and asthetics. I hope this dosen’t sound like bullshit because it’s the CORE of what CarDomain’s members are all about.
There are people who choose mods to please others, that’s great but I think it’s best when you change your car as you want.
Now that I’ve beaten that to death, get ‘em. It’ll break up the monotony a little.
it doesnt matter

Here is the thing. I want to install them on the car but at the same point I also want to take them off after a week or two. After getting the kit from the guys over at Vertical Doors Inc and opening the box, reading the instructions, etc… I’m just not sure I want to put all the work into the installation to only turn around and pull them after a week or so. At the same point I’m also a little bored with the smart and have been keeping my eyes peeled for a project vehicle to replace the smart and to send the smart off to some new owner. As for me, I just like to be different and have a good time and I think the Lambo doors are a great way to express this!

What really matters isn’t what others think. Since the 50′s guys have changed things on their rides to be different or often rebelious but the main reason why they did it was to make a statement and to show their own independence. Don’t ask a bunch of people what they want, ask yourself what YOU want. It’s all about you making a statement not anyone else. And remember, any artist/car builder/fabricator is going to build things only to learn it’s not quite what he wanted. On the other hand, it can goe either way and sometimes we end up with something others are jealous of. Be brave, go for it but only if YOU feel good about it.

Suicide-lambo is sick??? Is the same as a lambo but the other way. Would you still thinka an ugly fat chick was hot if she turns around facing you the other way??? Didn’t think so!

See if theres a Suicide-Lambo kit, that would be look sick. Or regular suicides if not.. but if it were my Smart, I’d stay away from the “plain-jane” lambos. They’re getting waaay too played out in my opinion.

Instead of putting them on your Smart you need to convince some dweeb to put them on something even more uncool. Like a Geo Metro or better yet just the back doors of a Cavalier. Or you could always sell them on e-bay and spend the money on something worthwhile. The only way that the Vertical lift doors would look good on the Smart is if you installed them suicide style. The only problem is, you would have a heck of a time getting in the car that way.
