Ford’s MyKey: A Kinder, Gentler Big Brother

By John Coyle

Editor

Starting in 2010, all Fords will come with MyKey, a programmable system that will make seat belt warnings impossible to ignore, and will also be able to limit a vehicle’s top speed and radio volume. Obviously, it’s designed so parents can keep young drivers in check, and I can’t imagine too many teens are going to love the idea. But given that most kids don’t get to tell their folks what kind of car to buy, I think this could be a great selling point for Ford. What do you think? Is MyKey a good idea? Read the full press release over at Jalopnik.

I think kids are resistant to authority and will find away around it so its pointless to try.

Looking att the last comment I found like 25 words spelled wrong. Is english like a second language to you people or what?

but I honestly think it a good idea to a point. The limiting of the volume is a great idea and so is the seatbelt noise. But the speed thing is still kinda sketchy for me but good job ford keeping kids safe.

What is up with all of the illiterate people on here. Is it really that much harder to type that rather than “dat” It makes you sound like a retard. Anyways to Matt, just be careful man, I never had the luxury of my parents paying for car/insurance/gas, etc… so it really took an honest effort for me not to wreck my car or get a speeding ticket. I like to get into it on the street if someone pulls up next to me too but I usually let off around 60 and not when any other cars are around. BTW I drive a 99 Civic Si, hope I don’t see you on the street.

i agree with aromus. isnt the underlying problem the fact that children havent been taught to obey the rules? technology is a nice backup but to me it seems like we need to do a better job teaching civility and personal restraint.

What ever happend to the days when we would teach our kids responsability behind the wheel. We give them the keys and hope technology will take care of them. I think this is an ok idea but like others have said, not fool proof. What we as parents dont understand is, kids today have a better grip on technology than we give them credit for. Some kid will learn to hack the computer, with enough money even re-program the cars computer system, and parents would be non the wiser. I myself as a parent have started early, my son and I are building his car 5 years before he gets to drive it. The blood, sweat and tears he puts into will teach him the value of what he has and then in turn appreciate and respect the car more than if I had just bought it for him. He will also learn that speed can be fun and feared at the same time as long as its on the track and not the streets.

I really agree with the kid below me. I’m only 16, but without a car. My mother tells me that if my grades are at at least a ‘b’ average, she’ll buy a 1996 Camaro. In a way, I’m working my ass off for it, but something tells me I’ll still pay her the $2500 dollars for the car, because I’ll probably feel guilty and wont appreciate it. If kids our age actually worked for their cars, then this MyKey would be pointless, because then we wouldn’t risk our hard-earned property. Especially without our parents backing us up.

CHRISTIAN

Age: 17 years old

Whip: 2006 Nissan Titan, and no mommy dodnt pay for it. I saved $10,000.00 for my own car, feels good to know it’s yours.

I think that this idea is a good idea, however I think that kids will just hack it in a few weeks. At my school theres those couple of hacker-smart kids who know everything about the latest technology.
With this new Mkey, and this GPS systems you can put in your cars and video monitoring systems I kinda feel it takes the joy out of driving. For us teenage drivers driving is a privelage but with Mom and Dad having the ability to watch your EVERY move it’s no fun. Teen drivers are supposed to use this time to become expierienced, how can we relax and just drive with someone watching you, and always knowing where you are. As far as the volume issue, right now my rigs system is stock and thats ok for me because Im still new to the road. So once I become expierienced and have the money then comes the subs and system. i think that kids who abuse their parents cars have no respect. I know that since I had to work my ass off for my truck I appreciate it more than ever now. When you have to pay for your own stuff, you stop and realize you have to treat it better. These rich kids wont have Mommy and Daddy to buy them everything ( well, maybe some ;) . So I feel the Technology sounds good for some drivers, but just good old fashioned common sense and responsibilty is also an option!!!

4th generation Camaros had a chip in the key, but only as an anti-theft device. They should just do that. Besides, how hard would it be for a kid to earn the 60 dollars it costs to have an unprogrammed copy made? Or to pay their technology genius of a best friend just reprogram it?

What parent in theyre right mind would give a 16 year old keys to theyre new car??, and in years they’ll be ways to bypass it. No matter what they do, teenagers will still be irresponsible. My parents helped me out by lending me a little money towards my first car, which was a 20 year old jalopy, but it was mine and I worked my butt off in highschool to afford the insane $450 a month insurance. It deffinatly helped me to be more responsible, that or it was the repeated drilling “driving is a privilege not a right!”..or was it the other way around….

To John P.
I don’t travel over 100 km/h haha, the roads around where I live arent fit to drive any faster on, and only time I speed is when called on by the ones we call “rice burners” and I won’t ever back down a challenge!

Great idea (for the parents), but still not teenage proof. 1. kids can still fly through empty lots and crowded neighgorhoods at 65mph(cars cant read speed limit signs, yet) 2. pulling the e-brake and doing doughnuts is still a possibility especially in the winter. And 3. kids dont want to drive thier parents dull cars, Most of them will still be buying 15yr old rides that dont have half the electronics todays cars do. Fewer electronic controls= MORE FUN!!!

Oct 7, 2008 at 11:37 pm

basically the kid isnt going to want to drive his parents car knowing that it had the mkey. hes going to call up his friend to pick him up and take him. i agree yes the teen is going to find a way around it i mean shit a kid found a way around the iphone. with everything being electronic now how are the auto companies going to make sure nothing will go wrong, what if for some reason something goes wrong with the key? im glad someone is thinking about teen drivers safety but they should really think about this. NJ wanted to put huge stickers on the back of all teens cars with a provisional license, letting people kno they are a new driver. they should do something less restrictive like that rather then making a car with limitations

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH. GENIUS. really, for learning, go for mommy and daddy’s car, but you should really get your OWN. trust me, it would be a lot better if we didn’t have losers clinging to mommy and daddy’s new car. and i think it would be really funny to ride with friends with MyKey. “dude, take the freeway” “awww, bro, i can’t, the car is only set to go 30 mph dude” hahaha. and it will keep all the loser kids from running their parent’s cars into the ground as well. really if you didn’t pay for it, you probably shouldn’t burn out in it, or blow up the speakers. build your own car so you know its limits ;) .

Have you ever heard of turning off the tv, sitting down with your kids and simply beating them?

I think we can all learn from Bender B Rodgriguez.

RICO Laws
Oct 7, 2008 at 7:16 pm

I dont like it. it might be cuz im 16, but i think kids should learn how to get away with shit. so when you bounce past ur mom at 120 in town, or when u roll up at the stop sign beside ur dad pumpin music, u shud get the shit beat out of u and ur car taken away.
My idea: make it so the driver (only driver) airbag doesnt deploy at a certain speed

Matt we will see how long you go accident and ticket free with that attitude.

Matty
Oct 7, 2008 at 6:46 pm

Matt, age 16:

I am very much against it, but I know my folks won’t ever buy a new car, and it wouldn’t ever be a ford! and I don’t see why radio volume should be limited, thats just ridiculous.

I own my own car for good reason, I drive how I want and my volume is whatever level I’m in the mood for haha.

Call me your average 16 year old, but its just rediculous making cars so you can’t have a little fun is stupid. They never cared bout this kind of stuff when our parents were growin up!

Anonymous
Oct 7, 2008 at 1:38 pm

first off, why the fuck would anybody buy their kid a $40k car for their first car, second 80mph governor wont help because what stops them from going 80 in a 30? ideally the car should use gps to determine the speed limit on the road, and not let the driver exceed that by 5 mph.

anyway, when i got my first car it didnt have any of that shit and i just learned to obey the speed limit because fines and insurance premiums will take away all ur extra cash fast.

John P.
Oct 7, 2008 at 1:25 pm

My first car had MyKey too, except for it was called my step-dad’s right hand. If I drove recklessly he would whoop my ass, If I sped, he would whoop my ass and if I listened to the radio (for the first year of driving) he would whoop my ass. I have been driving for 5 years now with no accidents and no moving violations. I had to keep driving logs and my parents would only let me drive to work. I still had to take the bus to high school my senior year even though I paid for the car, the insurance and the parking pass. That is what makes safe drivers.

i dont like the idea if somthing happens its their fault if they want they can still screw around in that concept so wats the point of getting my kid a 30 to 40 thousand dollar car when i can buy him a piece of shit an keep fixing up my car

GTwildfire
Oct 7, 2008 at 5:46 am

As Travis wrote, My Key dosen’t protect against everything. I think the most important protection would be for the kid to take a defensive driving course and combine that with rules like no friends in the car for a year or two, maybe a GPS tracker, etc.
-
Mostly though you can’t just rely on gadgets and ignore teaching responsibility.

Travis
Oct 7, 2008 at 4:58 am

If you give your kids a car and the are irresponsible then no speed governor or anything of the such will protect them or deter them from being stupid. Problem’s not the car being able to do 100+ mph, it’s with the person that doesn’t know how to use that power responsibility.

Oct 7, 2008 at 2:32 am

What a good way to encourage stealing. You’d just nick the bloody key and reprogram it. Besides, like Jared said, if you can’t trust your kids to drive legally, why would you buy them a brand new car?

Mike
Oct 7, 2008 at 2:11 am

its a smart idea. yes. but i know first hand (because my parents are up my alley when it comes to this stuff. they got that car gps thing) its really bad if your a kid and wanna enjoy the freedom of getting their license. i think it will get alot of sales, but i’m also sure it will have its downfalls (if a parent needed to drive the car, somethign needed to be repaired, etc.)

ALSO… i’m sure when this technology coems out in 2010, i’m sure there will be soem kind of technology out there to beat the system (laptop programming, etc.) Someon’s just gottta have the brains and will power to find a way to beat it.

Jared
Oct 7, 2008 at 2:11 am

I could easily dismantle one of these things…..and this is just another thing that goes too far with controlling your kids. Whatever happened to trust? If you don’t trust your kid to go slower than 80 mph, than why trust him/her at all?

BTW i would program its top speed to only 1 mph just to fuck with the owner lol…

Bill
Oct 7, 2008 at 1:42 am

not at all atleast not the speed limiting parts because i’ve been in spots where if i hadn’t sped i would’ve been rearended and run off a bridge into a running river above flood stage

Almost every key these days has a radio transponder built into it. Nothing would stop said teen from stealing one of the “good” keys from the house or maybe figuring out how to buy a copy from the dealer for $150 or whatever, but a hardware store copy isn’t going to do more than maybe unlock the doors.

Nes
Oct 6, 2008 at 9:27 pm

Oh and also the fact that maybe the car will not work if the ORIGINAL key is not inserted!

Nes
