Chevy HHR SS vs. MAZDASPEED3: Which Would You Choose?

By Rob

Editor-in-Chief

This week’s Showroom Showdown features two fun and practical family haulers. The Chevy weighs 3,280 pounds and has a turbo 2.0 liter four banger which puts out 260 hp. The Mazda weighs 3,153 pounds and has a 2.3 liter turbo four banger rated at 263 hp. The Mazda is available with a 6 speed manual (the HHR only comes with a 5 speed manual) but the HHR gets slightly better gas mileage (21/29 vs. Mazda’s 18/26). Both cars come in near the $25k mark. So, which would you choose?

I bought a Mazda 3 hatchback a few months ago, and all I can say is Greatttttttttttt.
I can’t get over how fast this litle putt putt is.
Off the line ok, but once rolling and nail it, it is incredibly fast.
I haven’t tried it yet, but I think it would give my Dakota r/t/ with it’s 5.9 v8 a run for it’s money.
Actually the only thing I don’t like about the Mazda is the super cheap carpeting.
I will be replacing it soon with some quality carpet.

hhr??? are you kidding me? that’s almost as bad as the srt4 caliber. the MS3 looks sporty. i guess the hhr would be cool if you were leading a funeral precession….and you had to go really fast while doing so. but for a fun, daily driver w/ some serious boost, the MS3 wins hands down.

like, what market is chevy appealing to w/ this thing? are there people out there who are really saying, “thank god! a sports car that looks like a station wagon! all these years of waiting and now i can finally get the car of my dreams!”

the hhr is a glorified “mom-car.” the fastest grocery getter in the world!

First off for all you dumbass’ who think Ford ownes Mazda, that is not true, Ford ownes stock in Mazda, thats it. Much like how Daimler ownes about 19.9% of Chrysler. As far as comparing the HHR SS to the Speed3, the Mazda is just overall a better car, better construction, reliability, and parts. The Cobalt SS turbo may be a bit better looking on paper, but when it’s as close as it and the speed3 are in performance the better driver will end up being the deciding factor.

Rob
Oct 10, 2008 at 6:54 am

Speed 3 all the way! Performance and style just outperform the HHR SS hands down.

number 1, MAZDAfuckingSPEED.
theres no way id choose an HHR,
for one it performs liek shit its liek a second udner the mazda,
two
noting compares to a mazda tuned suspension at this price, the mazda performs like a car almost twice its price.

the cobalt SS wouldve been a better competitor. the numebr are closer. same engine as the hhr but tis not a piece of shit

plus look hwo ugly the hhr is inside and out,the interior materials on low end Chevy are very ugly and cheap, all plastic.

the MS3 is beautiful inside and out. the masda comes wiht recaro seats for god sakes.
-_-

Oct 10, 2008 at 5:12 am

I was looking at both as well as the Caliber Srt-4, but only the HHR SS has an optional auto tranny (as neither my wife nor I ever learned to drive a manual), so that was the selling point for me. As far as looks go, I would definitely have chosen the SRT-4, but I like all 3.

k
Oct 10, 2008 at 3:40 am

I own a HHR and rented mazada3(non-turbo) for 2wks and both auto. I can say that mazada was fun to drive country road while HHR was great on HWY across the state. I would like to own both but if I have to choose one then mazada 3 all hands down. Mazada3 non turbo feels faster and HHR feels heavy when accerlating but I have to give HHR for the cargo space. Thats my 2cent.

definatly go with the HHR SS. mazdas are shit. the last thing i would want is to have my car built by some chinese fag. the mazda is a girls car anyways. HHR SS all the way.

Mazdaspeed JDM all the way
Oct 10, 2008 at 1:23 am

Get it through ur heads fools. MAZDA Is JDM full Japan it is made in Japan and performs from Japan. Mazdaspeed 3 all the way cuz I own one and I dont appreciate the haterz who don’t know shit about power from a turbo and try to judge others when they don’t know shit… Wise up fools and recognize. Mazdaspeed 3 and HHR SS LOL no contest. Mazdaspeed3 all the way…!

Anonymous
Oct 10, 2008 at 1:05 am

chuck i hate to say it but you dont know about cars either. the mazda 3 shares the same platform as the euro focus, not our focus. look up the euro focus it’s better than ours in everyway and is by no means a p.o.s. and who told you the rangerover and the explorer or expedition are the same vehicle? an instructor at toilet school? …dumbass

HHRSPEED3SS
Oct 10, 2008 at 1:05 am

I think the mazda would be quicker, but with the size of the hhr, one could get a pretty huge sound system. Plug your ears mazda owners. I think the speed3 looks like a chick car.

john doe
Oct 9, 2008 at 10:55 pm

This is like apples and orange. First of all I own a HHR LT(auto) and I rented and mazda3 hatch not mazda speed(auto) for 2 wks. Mazada3 was fun to drive but it didnt have cargo space. HHR was heavy but it had more cargo space. I stick w/hhr because cargo space not because its looks like pt cruiser. And both car are fun to drive.

Chuck
Oct 9, 2008 at 10:55 pm

Chevy HHR SS! The mazda is nothing but a FORD POS. The guy that said that the escape and the Ranger are the only two vehicles that share chassis is almost a Dumbass. The Range rover is a Expedition or an Explorer…Whichevere is the one thats a little bigger than the ranger. The Focus shares a chasis with the Mazda 3 and 6. What the hell are we wasting our time voting on these Pea shooter 4 bangers for anyway?! Get some real freaking vehicles up there for us to vote on!

Anonymous
Oct 9, 2008 at 10:30 pm

I’d go with the speed3, as a matter of fact I already did! HHR SS = PT Cruiser. I hear alot of Cobalt SS fanboys compaining that it is faster than the speed3, that is true, the Cobalt SS is much faster going back to the dealership for repairs!

Alexander McKean
Oct 9, 2008 at 10:28 pm

I would choose the HHR SS because one, it’s GM, and I am a GM guy… and two because I like the idea of an upcoming HHR SS Panel!

j man and f that, its a choice between Chevy or Mazda. Not subaru! Dipshits!!!!

Anonymous
Oct 9, 2008 at 8:33 pm

First off the Mazda 3/Speed 3 is not a Ford Focus! If you look at the vin you would know. It is a Japanese import. Secondly, Mazda has very little to do with Ford. There is only two vehicles that they share chassis with now. Which is the Tribute( Escape) and the B series trucks ( Ranger ). Lastly, this is not a real match up!! There is nothing to compare. Im not being bias cause I own a Mazda nor because I work at Mazda. But the fact remains is the HHR is another bite off the PT Cruiser so if even if you put a turbo on it its still a piece of shit!!!! And to all you idiots saying the money to buy a MS3, you’d rather buy a Skyline, Supra or some other ridiculous vehicle, get a life!!! Do you know how much one of those cost!! This aint the fast and the furious!!! In todays market your lucky to afford a Neon and they dont even make those anymore!! So for the money, you get a bargain getting a MS3! The most bang for your hard earned buck!!! Read between the lines…..Damn Ricers!!!!

Mike
Oct 9, 2008 at 3:50 pm

I drive a HHR at work, non turbo. I drove a Cobalt SS Turbocharged Saturday, I drove a MS3 the week before. The power output and shifting in the MS3 sucks, everytime it would squeel the tires. The cobalt has better gearing. Road and Track in the latest issue, rated the Cobalt SS better than the 09 WRX, MS3, and Ralliart, although the MS3 beat out the R32 and another vehicle in previous issues. Personally I wouldn’t take the HHR, I’d get the Cobalt SS preferably a two door model.

Fergy
Oct 9, 2008 at 3:40 pm

Why would you want what looks like a supersized PT-Cruiser? Hell I’d take a normal Mazda 3 over it!

kyleslouis
Oct 9, 2008 at 2:44 pm

speed3 hands down, the hhr looks like an pt cruiser took a few too many steroids. Plus performance wise the mazda has a better power to weight ratio and a six speed. The only reason to pick the hhr would be for gas mileage and if your gonna bitch out like that go get a prius.

Mike
Oct 9, 2008 at 2:30 pm

Acy704 says he owns a Chevy so he’ll go with the HHR, plus Mazda is owned by Ford! Who gives a shit. Bro, the Mazdaspeed 3 is easily the better car in this comparison. Just cuz they through a nice motor into the HHR doesn’t make it a worthy competitor to the proven performance of Mazdaspeed intelligence. I just think it’s stupid to pick a car based on brand, I own a Chevy too, and I’m going with the Mazda!!!

Canyon
Oct 9, 2008 at 2:29 pm

Both cars are fast and powerful but the HHR is hideous. This whole “retro” thing needs to stop. It is like a warmed over fuchsia snow suit, no matter what you do it is still ugly. So I’ll have to go with the nice, modern looking, Mazda.

the mazda, all the way, those cars are pretty amazing, and if you notice the power-to-liter on both engines, it’s obvious that the mazda engine isn’t quite as highly tuned from the factory, so that shows it’ll probably have a longer life, and hey, it’s japanese either way.

HHR SS. Although it would have to be the panel version of the SS. Much cooler than the Mazda3

It brings performance back to the SS moniker. It, along with the Cobalt SS.

Plus it’s sort of a sleeper. Would you expect 260 horses in that body style? Launch control? It’s like tubbing and stuffing a 502 into 1949 Suburban.

HHR, even though it’s going to lose hardcore.

the HHR has always looked like a hearse meant for midgets to me, and I dont like the new GM cars’ interiors. The Mazda’s are much nicer to drive and have a better laid out interior, so for these reasons I’d take the Mazda any day (just wish they had the AWD like it’s big brother [6] has)

Easiest one yet: Mazdaspeed3
Mazda3 is one of the best cars under $30k – weighs 150 pounds less – and let’s not forget resale value.
HHR is built on the Cobalt platform… and is a modern Chevy.
What else do you need to know?

NO QUESTION…the Mazda3. The HHR is not attractive in anyway.

The 3 is a speedy little family hauler. The HHR is a bad stab at retro. Also, looking like a PT Cruiser isn’t going to earn anybody any points. Mazda all the way.

How is it possible that the Mazda weighs just 30 pounds less (and the HHR weighs 100 pounds more!) than my ‘04 V6 Mustang? What am I missing here?

Hands down, Mazdaspeed 3. The extra .3L displacement will help significantly in terms of aftermarket modifications. Plus, the Mazdaspeed just looks better.
