WTF? Dodge Cancels Challenger Convertible
By Rob Einaudi
Editor-in-Chief
There have been rumors about this for a few months over on Moparts, but I guess I was in denial. Now it looks like it’s official: no Challenger vert. Why? "We considered a convertible when we were developing Challenger, but the extra weight needed to beef up the car when the top was removed was too much of a penalty," said Mike Accavitti, director of Dodge brand marketing. He added, "We didn’t see a huge market for a convertible that would justify the vehicle."
So let me get this straight. The Chrysler Sebring convertible is the "best selling convertible in America." It’s priced at $27k, about a $7k premium over the Sebring sedan. It seems to me that the Challenger SE vert could easily be priced under $30k, and go head to head with the Mustang vert (and the Camaro vert when it comes out). It would be a more practical and appealing convertible than either the Sebring or the Mustang. Who cares if it gains a few extra pounds? That’s the case with every convertible on the market. But Dodge says no go. Frankly, I’m pretty disappointed. Source: Kicking Tires

American auto makers are losing their behinds because nothing they make can touch Honda V-Technology. I wouldn’t be caught dead in an American car. I just like living in the U.S.A. to bum state benifits like E.D.D., permanent disability, and welfare. Great country, good benefits to people who don’t need them, and bad automobiles. This is a dream come true to my Turkish ass.

No wonder American auto makers are losing market share..its self fulfilling!! The same thing happened with the PT cruiser..they waited what.. 3 or four YEARS before they did a rag top..by then consumers were cooling to the design..they should also have done a PT mini pickup like the old Rampage…these people are just plain lazy!! they design ONE body style and then go home….I remember the Marauder convt. at the car show….wonderful car..plus memo to the idiots at Chrysler…more body styles means more sales ..more trips to the dealer..for service etc etc…while we are on the subject…do these guys even go to auctions..Cuda’s sell for double that of Challengers…they really should have made the Cuda or Both lines!!
I remember going to the NYC show when they introduced the Mustang Mach 1 with the Shaker hood. A Ford exec. was standing there and I said ..nice car they should make a topless version..she turned to me and said…”they didn’t make a Mach 1 convt. back in the sixties!!! Ford actually pays someone to think this way…how about this… build proto-types and get some feedback from the public..u know the people who BUY the Friggen CARS!!!

Appearently none of you people are old enough to remember that the 1970 Challenger (which the current car car is modeled after) could be had in both a hard top AND a convertible.
I too think that the new Challenger should be built from the factory as a convertible along with the hardtop!
Nothing could be better than a brand new big V8 powered rear wheel drive sexy Challenger driven with the top down on a nice sunny summer day! Ahh.

Dude, it already weighs like 4000 pounds. Why throw the top down with this big ass car? I agree w/ the no Convo decision. Still wouldn’t buy it either way.

Great Car! Can’t speak for the SE model however. I dont believe a convertable would be good on the Challenger to begin with. The hard top keeps the car stable, on the other hand the convertable make the car look like crap. Keep it the way it is!
slammin' stupidity

That is the dumbest idea that Chrysler would do….I’ll Message them to do the idea next year. Keep the classic muscle cars the same way.

That’s sad news.
First, no hardtop coupe like the prototype, now no convertible… That leaves only the post coupe. I don’t like cars with center posts.
And this makes no sense:
“We considered a convertible when we were developing Challenger, but the extra weight needed to beef up the car when the top was removed was too much of a penalty,” said Mike Accavitti, director of Dodge brand marketing. He added, “We didn’t see a huge market for a convertible that would justify the vehicle.”
This car should have replaced the Sebring which I think is ugly.

Dammit. I want a modern big body convertible. There was the Mercury Marauder convertible concept, the 300 convertible and now this. I’m disappointed.

Almost a new challenger buyer
Oct 11, 2008 at 3:18 am
Let me also say…
“No Market?”
This coming from the same company a few years ago that said there was “No Market” for a two door! This is rediculous and I can’t believe they think Dodge doesn’t need a convertible. This guy, Mike Accavitti, needs to be fired!
Build the damn vert!!!!!!

It didn’t look that nice anyways plus if you’re getting one the last of your concerns is if you can get a convertible or not!

I don’t think it’s really the lack of a market per se…I think it has more to do with the fact that Mopar doesn’t have two cents to rub together.

I think it looks ugly topless, but to each his own. Stupid decision on Chrysler’s part though.

You already stated this, but to reinforce it:
No Market?
mustang vert
camaro vert
350Z roadster
yeah, what were those companies thinking, no consumer would buy a CONVERTIBLE? They weigh so much!
I’m a hardtop guy, but the average convertible buyer’s last concern is how much the car weighs or how it performs…
Good Job Chrysler!

FAIL.
I prefer hardtops, but this is dissappointing.
