Honda S3000

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

Road & Track claims that Honda is working on the successor to the S2000. Rumor has it that it may come with a 3.0 or 3.5 liter V6, but it’s all speculation at this point. Still, I hope that Honda keeps the roadster alive.

they’ve gotton away form the spirit of the original roadsters??????? maybe mazda and bmw, but the s2k and in this case, the s3k, are the only ones you can drive without looking like a little bitch in a barbie car.

I’ve had an S2000 since 2002 and love the car. I plan on keeping it well into retirment. Well, I did plan on keeping it well into retirement until I saw the S3000. I can’t wait for it to come out.

the look of the car is friggen hot, but I agree with Rob: super light, lower HP cars are magic. Think about the old datsun roadsters or MG’s… we need a modern version.

Honda can bring it back, but unless this has a hard top version, or more than 330hp, then the 370Z is going to destroy this thing.

As much as I’d like an S2000 successor, they’ve really gotten away from the spirit of the original roadsters — well roadsters in general.

The last time I looked at an S2000 was back in early 04. It was fun, but I felt they were doing too much to compete with the Boxster (which was out of my price range) and to just have “poooowwweeeeerrrrr” in general. I ended up putting a deposit down on the Evo VIII MR.

Earlier this year I picked up an MX-5, and honestly, I feel that car weighs too much nowadays at nearly 2500lbs. Well, the S2000 is another 300+ pounds on top. Sticking a V6 in it would mean it’d probably cross 3000lbs. Interesting, when the next MX-5 will probably add lightness to go back to the 2200-2300lb range.

In its day, the car was interesting. A very driver focused cockpit, the LED readout and 9,000rpm redline. The problem is its a decade old. That and honestly I wish it had a manual soft-top option like the MX-5 — the electric roof may close in 8 seconds, but I can close, re-open and close again an MX-5′s in that, weighs less, less to break, and don’t have to stop to do it.
