Which Refresh Do You Prefer? The 370Z or the 2010 Mustang?
By Rob Einaudi
Editor-in-Chief
Both the Mustang and the Z car are being refreshed for 2010, and each will be officially unveiled at the LA Auto Show next month. Jalopnik has some nice renderings of the 370Z and they also have the latest spy pics of the 2010 Mustang. Both cars seem to be getting some sharper creases, but the changes are definitely evolutionary and not revolutionary. Do you think Nissan and Ford are taking these cars in the right direction? And which refresh do you prefer? And notice that I asked which refresh, not which car…

I would take the ‘stang for sure! The Mustang has by far been the most iconic car of American Muscle. It has always been at the top! Think about it, has production of the Mustang ever come to a halt? NO! Unlike its competitors [IE the Camaro && Corvette], the Mustang has had continuous production since the beginning. I’ve done my research on the Ford Mustang, and I think any muscle/sports car driver should! Ford could def. use some HP upgrades, but I feel as if they are doing a good job keeping their cars rather cheap and still somewhat economical which is what everyone is looking for nowadays.

Mustang too well camouflagged …

These pics don’t really do them justice, but the new stang looks even better than the 05-09, as far as looking like the old ones. Yes you do see them all the time, because they are sexy and affordable, and cheap to make fast. I can’t wait to get a real look at a new one with no camo!

As long as the Z keeps those god awful looking door handles, I’m not buyin it.
As for the Mustang, toss a coin and I’ll bet you’ll see one before the coin lands.

Both cars are camaflouged and the Z car is shot at an angle that makes it hard to tell what it really looks like. In my humble opinion, the new Camaro and Dodge Challenger have re-awaked the idea that America is once again PROUD to make cars that look, well, American. The Chrystler 500, although it has Mercedez Benz DNA in it, looks a broad shouldered, mature, large, rear drive, American Sedan. GM via connection to Holden Monero from Australia is resurrection rear-drive and performance. This version of the Mustang, if visualized without the tiger stripes, looks bad. It’s again, a throwback of American cars trying to look Japanese. The original 240Z looked British somewhat, but was an affordable, light, iconic car. It later, in the 260Z and 280Z and 300Z became a GT luxury cruiser, not a sports car. The Mustang was going to be replaced by the Front Wheel Drive Ford Probe. Remember? So the more “Japanese” Americans make their cars, the more we don’t like them. The more “German” the Japanese make their cars, the less there is to like. To me, the new Z looks too much like the Porche 928. The Mustang is trying too much like a Camaro mixed with Toyota Celica DNA. Stick with what works: be proud of your country of origin and what it represents. Imitation is the highest form of flattery, but the retro looking Mustang is a hot car. Just keep it the way it is and pump up the power train to compete with Camaro and make independant rear suspension standard across the board and 3.55:1 gearing. No need to change thing. The Z car is not in same price class, about $10k-$15k more than a Mustang and attracts a different kind of buyer demographic. Stick to being true: Be an American car and not imitate a Japanese Car. if you’re Japanese, stick to that, and don’t imitate a German car.

Alright, let me start off by saying that you can’t go on these pics, the Z car is taken at such an extreme angle that its hard to tell what it really looks like, the Mustang is done up in the camo paint for the express purpose of not letting on what it really looks like.
A couple of quick counterpoints as well. A car is only as reliable as you can AFFORD to make it as an owner, don’t blame American automakers because you refuse to take car of your car. As for the Mustang looking more like an import as soon as Ford switched from the Fox, there is more old Mustang styling in the current Mustang than anything, do some research, and know what you talking about.
To be honest, I would take either car, but more likely the Mustang.

Well, they are both played out and over rated. Here that mustang looks like a big 350Z WTF? You see mustangs everywhere. Nissan is a more reliable, and better quality car in general though. And the 350z resembles the audi, sooooo whatever floats your boat….and your pockets….lol I’ll take the old school body of the muscle mustang with the 350z performance in this case. LOL

Well I owned a 300zx and I loved the car. I drove several 350z’s and was disappointed every time. 10 years later and My NA was only slightly slower then an automatic and talk about cheap interior parts. Overall I just hope they have fixed this though I am not holding my breath. Mustang is an awesome car but I see them everytime I blink and I hate trendy cars (another downer for the 350z). However Ford probably makes bank off of them so I can’t say I blame them. Honestly I am saving my money until I can buy a GTR

Come on now, doesn’t anyone remember the staphylococcus microscope photos in their high school biology text books? That is Bill Nye’s own 2010 Mustang of Science! Ford is trying to show us, in an obvious, yet clandestine fashion, that they and their paint crew are indeed on the cutting edge of science!

The 350z might be one of the best cars out there and the 370z will not disappoint but I don’t like the new exterior very much, especially the front (hope it will grow on me). The mustang is a muscle car and might not drive as good as the nissan but it looks really good. My vote is for the mustang even though I hate to see them everywhere I go!

To Louis,
Wow, that’s a well thought out, rational response to someone expressing their opinion. So, I guess one good turn deserves another.
I checked out the ride page for your 91 Accord. What are you trying to go for there? If it’s a performance package you’re going for why all the extra weight of the stereo? If it’s a “show car” you’re going for, why all the performance mods? Frankly, I’m surprised there isn’t a giant red R somewhere on the car (cause you know that adds 15hp). Anyway, I’m not surprised that someone who’d build a ricer like that would pick the Z.

We do understand the paint on the Mustang is for camouflaging purposes, yes? The wacky pattern makes it harder to pick out the lines. I seriously doubt Ford will offer the “Kidney Bean Paint” option in 2010.

Oct 21, 2008 at 4:18 am
The Z needs the update since the entire Nissan fleet has been upgraded a few times since the Zs conception. The mustang is only getting remodeled because Ford needs to still attract customers to buy a terrible car that has only been in production for a few short years.

STUPID comparison. The 2010 mustang is simply the same car, same chassis, just refreshed. Whereas the 370Z will be totally different. Nissan is going after the Porsche Cayman with the upcoming 370Z, the mustang is not even in the same league.
The 370Z will be shorter, wider, have at least 335HP, will get a 7spd automatic, with a 6spd manual of course, and will be 200+lbs lighter than the current 350Z. It will destroy the mustang, and will beat the cayman, just like how the GTR beats the 911 turbo. And the 370Z will look NOTHING like those computer generated pictures which makes this comparison even more stupid.

the mustangs ass looks like that of a pontiac g5… personaly i think they are both pathetic. 370z- that door handle is so gay, the z’s are cheap cars, get a infinity g35 or a g37, its the exact same chassy, you can get body kits for the g35/g37 to… i mean come on… seriousy, i would take my 30k that one of those would cost and by me an older 93-96 acura NSX… so sexy, and very good cars, although they look like they could go 200+mph, but unfortunatly in all reality a turbo vw jetta could keep up with them. OH WELL i go for sexy styling, which both of these cars DO NOT HAVE!

I like where they’re taking the Mustang. I was stoked when they brought in the retro styling, then disappointed when I saw just how bloated the new Mustangs looked in person. I think the updates make it look much more athletic than the current generation.
As for the Z, who can argue with upgrading an already excellent platform?

Aw dangit, I mean I like the 370Z refreshment better.
I mean, come on. Nissan is doing everything RIGHT with this! (and that is VERY ..refreshing to see.)
So let’s see what we’ve got here…
Better looks.
A shorter, more performance-oriented wheelbase.
Less weight.
Smaller overall size.
A bigger, more powerful engine.
Wider rear fenders!
And apparently a less plastic-y interior.
Yes please.

370Z, They are actually changing the car, the engine gets bumped up in displacement, the car is shortened and the looks both interior and exterior get refreshed. Instead of the mustang which it is pretty much the same car except a few tweaks.
