Would You Be Sad To See Dodge and Chrysler Go Away?
By Rob Einaudi
Editor-in-Chief
I haven’t written about this since my post last week cause just about everything I’ve read since then has been pure speculation and/or hand wringing (and I’ve been hitting refresh on the Detroit News site every five minutes). The GM-Chrysler talks are going on behind closed doors, so we probably aren’t gonna know anything til someone makes an official announcement. It’s rumored that both sides want the deal to happen before the election, but it all seems pretty complicated, and then of course the whole thing could blow over any time. Still, things are pretty ugly in Detroit right now, and I doubt anyone would be terribly surprised if one of the big three goes down. Right now the money seems to be on Dodge and Chrysler going away (Jeep still seems like a hot property), which could mean a loss of 30,000 jobs. Again, it’s all speculation, but if it did happen, would you care? Would you be sad or glad?

i don’t think i’ll be sad if chrslyer/dodge closed down. they make the worse cars, and they always break down and what not. and this is the same for GM/ford!
they’re mad that they are going to go under if the senate doesn’t bail em out! well thats their fault!!

to be truthful if chrysler/dodge goes under i hope FORD buys jeep cause thats the way it should have always been. but if they do then our economy will probably drop more. they all have crappy engines in em. only good things were the hemi and the deisels.

As a Detroiter, this would make me very sad. The loss of those jobs would be just devastating to our already devastated community. It is also sad to see these companies fail, they are iconic to our community. Not that they have not made this mess themselves, but that’s a whole different story.

Like i have said before i will burn my chevy lumina to the ground if GM buys and eliminates chrysler and dodge. Also i think Dodge would be smart if they opened a AMC line that was all Muscle with moderate gas milage.

A world without Mopar would suck pretty bad, especially since they’ve just in the last few years gotten it together and started producing half-decent cars again: the Charger, Magnum, 300, and Challenger. It’ll suck to see those go, especially the stillborn Challenger. On the other hand, what GM wants to do to Chrysler is exactly what Chrysler did to AMC in the 80’s, and killed off a bunch of great cars out of greed. Payback’s a motherfucker.

The thought of no more Chrysler and Dodge kinda pisses me off. I can understand why GM would want to buy them, even if you like them or don’t, Mopars sell. More models than others, but they do. It would eliminate alot of competition for GM. But, GM has their own problems to deal with and I don’t think the time is right for GM to make a bigger hole than it already is financially. Maybe if the CEOs and upper execs skipped a bonus or two, the car companies could hang in there and keep some people employed at the same time!? I doubt that would happen though.

If mopar goes under, I can definately say that I will never own a new car. It’s sad to see any line killed off, like Olds and Plymouth. And to the people asking aren’t Chryslers just rebadged Dodges, no, they’re not. Chrysler is the parent company, and the Dodges would be rebadged Chryslers, but they’re not anymore, and haven’t been for a few years.

Being a long time owner of Chrysler products, yes of course I’ll be sad to see them go.
GM ain’t the bad guy though. Cerebus is holding GMAC to their head like a .357 and forcing to take Chrysler off their hands when the going got just least bit tough.
That and the mess Diamler made of the product line up after chasing off all the talent Chrysler had amassed and sucked all the cash out of the company.
Unless the greedy bastids at Cerebus find religion (they won’t) or some other entity comes along to save the company, I’d rather have Chrysler swallowed by GM than the likes of Renault who “Daimlered” AMC.
At least Jeep should survive as an American brand………..

I’m a Ford fan, But personally i wouldn’t like to see any major automaker go under. Competition is what drives the market to continue to improve vehicles. And i don’t think anybody wants to see that weakened (at least not any more than the economy already has)

I’ve had a strong alliance with GM, but I’ve owned 3 jeeps and a Durango and really liked every one of them. Chrysler and its subsidiaries have has a mix of crappy, decent and some great vehicles over the years and when the company fades into acquisition, unless the brand holds some form of identity under GM, it will be like when Studebaker, Desoto, AMC and many other notable makers met their ends. History books will gain chapters and the market will lose some of its variety. I don’t like the prospect of what’s left of American Industry shrinking even more.
-
If GM takes over Chrysler, chances are that only a few chunks of Chrysler will be left when the dust settles. GM needs operating cash to get them by until the Volt comes out, and GM will be counting on the Volt to be successful now more than ever.
-
The problem with the Volt however, is that its price will be simply out of place for the high-volume production run needed to really help pull GM out of its funk. It will be priced most likely in the high 30’s and maybe into the 40’s if my memory serves me correctly. That is a huge problem and one I don’t see any way of getting around. Sure, it will be much more efficient but the cost will offset far too much of the savings at the pump. Combine that with tighter reigns on financing requirements and you have a recipe for failure.
-
What I just discussed bleeds into my lament for the neutering the Volt’s styling in the production version. Sure, the car’s technology is cutting edge, but if the pricing is 10 grand or more above the target price for a truly affordable thus popular car, it will also have to stand out esthetically as well.
-
I know I’m harping on the volt a lot, but GM is really gonna need it to be successful if they’re going to survive the next 5 or 10 years. I really don’t want to live in a world where the only new cars sold are made by foreign companies, and I don’t give a rat’s ass if they’re assembling them here… that’s NOT the same and NOT good enough.

Yes. I can’t really imagine what it would be like without Dodge… Chrysler? Oh well. I’m sorry to say it, but aren’t most (if not all) Chryslers just Dodges with a different name? I probably wouldn’t be effected if they got rid of Chrysler, but I just couldn’t imagine the Dodge name dieing.

Yeah, I’d miss it alot. Where am I supposed to get parts for my ol’ Spirit R/T? My local dealership has been able to find alot of reproduction and NOS parts for me, including hard to find stuff. If I knew what AMC owners do, then maybe I could cope better with the loss.

Besides the loss of jobs (which is both a sad and inevitable reality either way), I wouldn’t care at all. As long as the destruction of Chrysler and Dodge coincides with the release of the Chevy Viper, I’ll be overjoyed at the lack of Sebrings, PT Cruisers, Rams, Magnums, and all the other fugly garbage that has come from these two companies.

Seeing as my whole family only drives mopars, we would all be devestated. It’s mopar or no car for me. I’d never have to worrie about shoving out over 20 grand on a car cuz I’d be driving used Mopars the rest of my life.
