The Domestic Dilemma

By Rich Truesdell

Automotive Traveler

With all the bad news coming from Detroit, combined with all the uncertainties in the financial markets, and the rumored sale/break-up of Chrysler to GM, Nissan-Renault, or someone coming out of left field—possibly even Fiat—it got me thinking. What is really the root cause of the Motor City’s woes?

Last week, on the flight back from the Ford F-150 launch in Detroit, I struck up a conversation with my seat mate about the current crisis in the Motor City. And from that evolved an article I published yesterday over on Automotive Traveler with my take on one of the primary reasons; that a generation of car buyers have never so much as set foot in a domestic brand showroom. I invite you to take a look and encourage you to leave your thoughts and comments.

im 18 and the reason i don’t like many american cars is i don’t like how they like. i belive there just as dependable as any other car(ive owned 2 fords) how ever i do like the new stangs challenger and camero
so maybe in 4-5 years when i can afford a nice car like that i’ll give them a chance

A yo 7urtle, have you considered the 4 door cobalt ss. motor trend rated it #1 against a mazdaspeed 2, subaru stu, and the lancer ralliart.

depends on what your idea of good looking is… and as for the article, it was great. Very well-written, non-bias, and realistic…
Excellent job.

As cool as gm and other domestic brands are if they are not attracting new customer then its gonna encounter huge problems. If the import brand are gaining so much ground then domestic can definetly learn a thing or two on how to not only get new customers but keep those new coustomer loyal to their brand. Its a whole lot more profitable in rettaning coustomer then attracting new buyers.

Personally I wouldn’t do with a domestic brand but atleast some of the local gm dealerships are offering lots of import cars now days and they seem to be moving.

Well written. I’m 21. While many of my friends drive imports, one or two of us will only buy American. I have never bought an import. Every car I have owned has been American, although a few have some DNA from European or Japanese makers because of those companies having been bought out buy Domestic manufacturers. But all in all, I like some European styling, and dislike most of the Japanese lines, but will rarely call an American car ugly. You can’t beat classic V8 muscle and RWD. I get a kick out of toasting tuner Hondas.

Well written article, I agree with it 100% and it annoys me how stupid and thickheaded some people can be. I didn’t realize that number of 1 in 4 was that high. I will definately be sharing this.
