Gas on the Right, Brakes on the Left
I just spent some time with the new Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart, and it only comes with one transmission choice: Mitsubishi’s Twin Clutch-Sportronic Shift Transmission, a twin-clutch automatic gearbox. It’s similar to VW’s DSG tranny.
I grew up with traditional stick shifts, as I have never owned a vehicle fitted with an autobox. These new twin-clutch autos could sway me. In the auto mode, they’re just fine for around-town driving. Engage the manual mode, and there’s almost no lag between upshifts while downshifts are silky smooth. So, could these new gearboxes woo anyone else away from a clutch pedal?

Heck no there is nothing like hearing and feeling the clutch engage the engine and having that kind of control.

Nah!!! My sis 528i has it and I use it but #1 you can’t even hear the revs #2 it’s just like driving an auto since it shifts automaticly if you don’t shift when the computer wants to #3 It will never let you take the revs to redline!

I have a last generation Ralliart, and would never give up the 5 speed tranny, way too fun. Sure if you have an actual rally car, or an F1 car, clicking through the gears make sense, but on the street I will always choose manual over automatic.

I love a 5 speed, but this could be a nice alternative for some.

I’m not the biggest fan. I drove my girlfriends grand cherokee with this and something about shifting without pressing a clutch in was just wrong. I like to feel the gears engage, not just hear the computer do it for me. Plus i kept redlining it because the cab is so quiet you can’t hear the engine until it’s screaming. But that’s just me.

In the history of the GT-R video yesterday the same kind of gearbox was mentioned for the R35. seems like more car manufacturers are putting these kind of autoboxes in their cars so there must be a market for them.
My car was originally an automatic before it got swapped, so i have had both. I prefer a manual, but an auto box drives more relaxed. The best of both worlds might be the Porsche Tiptronic.

I like my 5 speed, but these are starting to make me wonder.

Definitely not. I love to heal and toe. Those gearboxes tend to grenade as well no matter who manufactures them.
