Edmunds Pits the ZR-1 Against the GT-R

By John Coyle

Editor

This might not initially seem like the most fair match-up, given that the GT-R lists for $25 grand less than the ‘Vette. But in reality, buyers are probably going to pay close to $100K to get their hands on  Godzilla, so price-wise, I don’t think this comparison is terribly unfair. Now, given the reams of positive press the GT-R has generated, I was really curious to see how it would fare in a head-to-head comparison with the General’s halo car. Would the GT-R’s suite of electronic nannies triumph over the ZR1’s brute force approach, or would raw power rule the day? Regardless, finding out must have been one hell of a good time, and the video of the showdown is awesome. Obviously, I’m not going to say which one came out on top. Head over to Edmunds and see for yourself.

“”"You ever seen a single turbo 1700 Horsepower Supra?
It makes a 1000 hp Monte Carlo Drag look like shite.
“”

One more thing to add that people forget….A 1700HP Supra usually has in the range of 700-800ft/lbs of torque(if not less because of the massive turbos to attain 2grand of HP). A 1000hp Monte Carlo drag spec has in the range of 800-900ft/lbs which makes for great launches at any RPM over 2grand. The Supra is more limited in that sense. It needs at least an RPM of 4grand to pull off the line as good as the Monte.
It’s a difference of engineering. You take a mild LS9 and strap a blower onto it and you now have the ZR1’s powerplant. With the GT-R, you take one of Nissan’s plentiful V-6 engines, add two turbos, retune, bottom end build-up, etc. and you have the GT-R’s Powerplant.
Some old school guys will post comments like:
“No matter how many CPU’s you stuff into Asian cars, they will not match the American V8″
Somewhat true, but also the ZR1’s powerplant isn’t some off the shelf 1960-70’s technology V8 (without the aid of CPU’s)
The two engines are not that much different other than two cylinders difference as far as Computer aides.
Where the cars differ is how they translate that power the wheels and onto the pavement.
ZR1 is all brute force and the driver has to have the ability and finese to keep the car going where he/she wants it to go.
The GT-R has all the computer aides for handling, acceleration, etc. (The ZR1 also has CPU aides for handling but they seem defeatable, the GT-R’s don’t seem to have that option.)
-
Bottom line is this, The GT-R has had a cult following in the states for quite some time now.
When those stupid movies came out (Fast and Furious, and yeah, I watched all of ‘em) They introduced to the mainstream US what Skylines were. (some groups already did know. However most didn’t) And that one in the first film was an R33 (I believe)
So people in the younger generations were waiting intently(sp?) for Nissan US to bring a model over to the states (other than importing R32-R34’s) to be sold on the US market.
-
It’s what every Import boy racer has dreamed of ever since they started tune their econoboxes to formidable street/strip cars.
-
It’s (GT-R) nothing more than a cult car now.

…and the senor editor would rather have the GTR cause of it’s exclusivity? That a little lame coming from a person that was supposed to test the performance of the two cars.

It’s starting to get Ferrari-lame now. Everybody wants a ferrari cause it’s a ferrari. Now it’s everybody wants a GTR cause it’s a GTR. It’s just another Fad, albeit a long one…

For once I agree with this matchup as compared to all the other matchups I have read in other magazines or online ‘zines.
The GTR does lay down some impressive numbers compared to everything in it’s BASE price range, but since dealer markups and everything tacked onto it (GTR) the price jumps quickly. (granted the dealer markups on the ZR1 are equally disgusting) Once the price reaches into the $100k territory, those stats aren’t really that impressive.
The skidpad is what gets me in this test. 1.08g in the ZR1 to .93g in the GTR? Wow.
I understand that the “V-spec” is coming out later, which will more than likely have more publishers ready to give a “rusty trombone” to Nissan.
The ZR1 may be king in the Edmunds test, but EVERY single ‘zine other than them will rate the GT-R higher than anything else in it’s price range. Even if competitors’ cars outclass the GT-R in nearly all catagories, the GT-R comes out on top. It’s disgusting. Give me an honest to God, Allah, Budda, etc comparison which paces the cars through everything that matters to SCCA people, people who collect supercars. and everyone in between. That’s what I would like to see.

I really wish the R35 didn’t look the way it does compared to the R34. Yes, the US finally gets a GTR legally, but it’s ugly as sin and doesn’t have the appeal of the R34 and back.
The R34 weighed 3380, the “new” R35 (GT-R as it’s now called) weighs in at a burly 3918 pounds. Where the hell did all that weight come from? Safety? You’re in a carbon and tin can going breakneck speeds, believe me, safety is out the window at that point.
CPU’s, TC, and SC? Whatever happened to the driving experience? A feel for the car and it’s handling as akeen to the driver’s senses? The car (general term) should by an extension of the driver. The only way the GT-R could be an extension of the driver, was if the driver was ASIMO or any other robot.
-
In summation, I don’t like that car. I’m disgusted by the bloated GT-R that I waited so intently on the US receiving.

Hey Nissan, re-introduce the old style R34 as the new R36 or whatever you decide to name the next generation on Skylines/GT-R’s.

Is the GT-R not doing a burnout because its a 4WD or because it doesn’t want to void the warranty???

As much as I’d love to say this was fair, keep in mind that the GT-R is a cult car in a different respect then the ZR1.

Granted the ZR1 is better, but it has 628hp vs. around 520.

55 years of cumulative design and American ingenuity vs. what? I really don’t think the GT-R stood a chance.

That video was kick ass! The burnout at the end was the icing on the cake. Stick a fork in the GT-R, its done. 1988montecarloss is right about the computer crap. In the video, you cant even hear the GT-R, but the VETTE makes itself know which it supercharger whine and the burly exhaust note. All hail the return of the KING!!!

Sure, the GTR is ugly as sin, but respect it for the performance.
Still like the ‘Vette better.

The last sentence sums it all up:
.
“The ZR1 is here now, and there’s nothing you can buy that will touch it. Nothing.”
.
Man, I NEED to win the lottery!
