Honda Fit vs. Hummer H3: Which Would You Choose?

By Rob

Editor-in-Chief

Ok, so it’s the week before SEMA (not to mention the presidential election) and we’re all feeling a little punchy. So I decided to mix it up a bit. In other words, this is not your standard Showroom Showdown. So here’s the deal: you get free use of either a Honda Fit or a Hummer H3 for two years. At the end of two years (and just as the Chevy Volt is about to hit dealer lots) you can decide to either keep the vehicle and own it outright, or sell it and pocket the money. Obviously, you’ll save several thousand dollars in gas if you go with the Fit, and we all know that the Hummer’s value will drop like a bomb (will the company even exit in two years?). And we’re comparing the top of the line Fit Sport ($18k) vs. the base H3 ($34k). Which would you rather drive for two years? Which will be worth more in two years? Which would you choose?

The fit is a better value. After 2 years you would lose about 2k in depreciation while the H3 would lose 12k. Gas for the fit would cost approximately $2500 for two years while the H3 would cost $4700, based on 15,000 annual miles and $2.50 gallon for gas. The Honda fit is more reliable and frankly, just looks better than that p.o.s hummer.

and also i owned an s10 that had around the mileage of of what you projected for the fit and it was a pos the transmission broke it constantly leaked oil no matter what i did and the front right tire almost came off three different times while i was driving due to the lug studs breaking

Hummer baby! Even though people complain that it’s not a “real” hummer, it’s still a fuckin hummer! It can still off-road and tackle most jobs you’d need on a day to day basis. The inline 5 ain’t bad in her either!

Oct 31, 2008 at 5:41 pm

Well Even Though Its Not As Cool As The H1 Or H2 I Choose The H3, Because Its only 1 More Cylinder, And Its Smaller Than The other Hummers So It Doesn’t Waste So Much Gas. Besides The Fit Is Smaller Than A VW Beatle.

Oct 31, 2008 at 4:54 pm

FIT : the H3 isn’t even a proper Hummer…too small.

Oct 31, 2008 at 12:46 pm

My current situation has me driving 100 miles a day…so the FIT would be my choice…I couldn’t afford to fuel the hummer…besides…a 5-cyl is much more of pansy sound than 4-cyl…at least with 4 you are a gas saver…with 5, you are worse off than any 6 and the laugh of all other trucks around you.

haha, that’s like offering a free international cxt or a volkswagon bug. as long as it’s a freebie i’m taking the largest rig i can get. of course that story would change if it affected my wallet. my vote goes to hummer.

Common sense
Oct 31, 2008 at 11:28 am

Depreciation value of vehicle after sale is usually based on the price they were bought. Do you really think the fit would out value the H3 after just 2 years? And it doesn’t say that when you choose one, it’s the only car you can drive for the next 2 years. If you still squabble about the cars, just think of it like this, “Do you want $18K or $34K???” DUH!

Rice Rocket, or Gas Guzzler? I hate Rice burners with a passaion. Those MFers side swiped me while at an intersection racing his buddies honda civic… Although Hummers are a little bit heavy on gas, I own one too. Gas is getting cheaper and its more affordable to drive around. The fit doesnt “fit” me at all. These vehicles are both terrible. Id much rather have the Hummer since I can offroad with it/atleast make it up to the mountain. Sorry Rice burners, you shunned me lol.

Charlie
Oct 31, 2008 at 2:09 am

You just cant do much in a fit other than drive 55 on open highways. At least with the H3 you could have some fun. Also, with gas costing 2.50 where i live, the fuel economy would be easy to absorb (its only 14/18 mpg).

none of your business
Oct 31, 2008 at 1:50 am

um how is this a showdown, neither i want something faster than a fit and the only thing hummers are good for is for breaking through walls and i dont encounter those situations in my daily life but ill take the fit since ill look like less of an idiot drivin around in it compared to drivin big piles of gas-guzzlin shit

SpeedCanHurt
Oct 31, 2008 at 1:40 am

Well, considering what you tend to think when you see an H3 driving down the road, I’d take the Fit. Especially considering petrol prices. $1.60 AU per liter is not exactly cheap, and I’d like to see just how many people actually would take the Hummer off-road. I’ll bet there’s not many.

Mike
Oct 31, 2008 at 12:28 am

I have test Driven both of them, and I would say HUMMER all the way!

The Fit is underpowered rice, plus, it is a small car! The only thing it has going for it is a good engine and MPGs!

If you are not sure what one you would like for two years, answer these questions:

Head on collsion (any collision) Hummer vs Fit?
You are caught in a storm (snow, rain, flood)?
You want max comfort and driveability?
YOU WANT AMERICAN!

Gas is going down, if I’m gonna keep it for two years I might as well keep it for good. H3 all the way on this one. No sense in putting a limit on where you can go. Try going through a desert or the snow in a Fit. Also, if you drive good enough, you can get ALMOST 20 miles on the road, but that’s if you drive good enough.

The H3, it snowed out here yesterday, started around 11PM Tues and didn’t stop til about 8AM Wed, that accumulated to about 6-7in. The amount of semi’s that jackknifed was ridiculous, little cars spinning out and getting stuck in the middle of the road as well. Hell, I had to drive my Dad’s Blazer that morning and needed 4wd just to get out of the red light at Wal-Mart! Then there’s the hill to get home, it can get pretty nasty during the winter (at one point last year the Jeep could not even make it up(the Blazer got stuck first though), lots of snow layered with ice, damn did that night SUCK!), it doesn’t get plowed to often because its a small private road. Lets see your little Fit handle that shit!

Just two quick questions: do you actually take your car/truck into the Moab, or off-roading period? Now do you have lots and lots of money to spend on gas every week at >$3/gallon and high monthly insurance premiums for a $35k vehicle? If you answered “no” to either of these questions, why the hell would you buy a hummer? its not even emasculating! you’re driving a soccer mom-mobile!

Fit ftw

Hummer, without thinking twice. Even if it won’t be worth a cent in 2 years and the fit appreciates, i still wouldn’t want to drive in that ugly little turd. Then, other than dislike for all of this midget cars coming out, there’s the V8, 4wd, big cab. Not even a fair comparison for me.

Let me set the scene here. Out of the blue, you are given a chance to take home a brand new vehicle. You don’t have to pay for anything besides gas and insurance. There is no other catches to this either. The vehicles you get to choose from are a Fit or a Hummer. When people see a Fit going down the road, they see another normal passenger car. When they see the Hummer, they see a Hummerand stare for a bit and think,”Man, it must be nice to drive one of thode around.” So, what would the obvious choice be. I will take the Hummer to go please. And could you make it quick, I have some showing off to do.

The Hummer, and here’s why:
In NE Indiana it snows, it sucks.
I get to use it for two years, no payments? So even the gas it uses will be cheaper than the payments.
More haulin’ room
Sits higher.
