GM/Chrysler Merger on Hold!

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

Allpar is reporting that the GM/Chrysler merger is on hold, since the Bush administration ruled out federal funding for it yesterday. This effectively pushes a possible merger out til after the election, or until the new administration and Congress take office in January. Maybe now Cerberus will reconsider a partnership with Renault-Nissan. More at Allpar.

I was thinking… Chrysler probably has enough spare parts lying around to whip up something extrordinary like Ford did with the original ‘64 1/2 Mustang. Why doesn’t Chrysler reposition and refocus. Jeep is obviously the offroad brand and should remain so, but I don’t think a Jeep pickup would dig into Ram sales figures so why not? Also Chrysler should try to aim for Cadillac while Dodge remains performance oriented. resurect Plymouth to compete with less expensive luxo brands like Buick. Well, Challenger-based Superbird would be nice, but if they at least luxoed the Challenger slightly and called it a Roadrunner, I think it would sell. And finally, why don’t they bring back AMC to compete with Scion for the younger market? AMC was known for building mold-breaking quirky cars in the first place, something Scion picked up on, so a new Gremlin might actually appeal to 18-34 year old car buyers.
