SEMA 2008: Let The Bastardization Begin!
I’ve been here at SEMA 2008 for 22 hours and, it’s all pretty impressive. First the sheer number of exhibitors is off the charts. Big rigs, trucks and cars are rolling in by the minute and the overall vibe is pretty cool. What I am very interested in seeing is the upcoming market trends. We all know I’m a muscle car guy, so rest assured, that’ll be the majority of what I’ll be bringing to the table. Since I also dig the SUV’s I’m rolling with those as well.
Customizers are everywhere at SEMA, and on the way to the convention center this morning one car from one of the best in the business caught my eye—and unfortunately, not in a good way. The new Dodge Challenger is out in force at SEMA, wearing many different outfits. This one, however, looks as though it was put together from a parts bin, and I hate to say it, but I think famed customizer George Barris may have had something to do with it. Every custom bit seemed to be thrown together as a non-functional afterthought. From the big bulbous carbon fiber hood scoop, to carbon fiber trunk overlay to the spoiler that was—GULP—cut in half. The wheels were up from the stock 20’s to 22’s and honestly didn’t do a damn thing for the car. The inside was even worse with a cheesy looking red leather overlay on top of the stock dash. No, please don’t think I am hating on Mr. Barris—the man is legend, but with this one I think he may just have missed mark. What do you think of it?

How could you take beautiful car and make it look like sh*t. The interior is the best thing on this whip. I have no idea what they were thinking with all the carbon fiber, pin striping and a split spoiler (Huh). The rim selection was terrible the stocks look way better. I don’t care if Mr. Barris is a legend he got this one wrong

I hate to say this to the person who took the time to write this, but it is kind of disappointing to read something that has no informational background to support it, and especially towards a man who is not only my idol, but also my grandpa. Now besides that not,; this comment isn’t in my grandpa’s defense, it is in the defense of a challenger that was ‘kustomized’ to be different. You said that this car, “looks as though it was put together from a parts bin,” but little do you even sound like you know that this car has a real carbon fiber top with a functional hood scoop that carries a full wrap around of the car, which to top it off, splits the spoiler into two spoilers. The split isn’t to be like, “OHHH look we can split spoilers”, that was created to be different and to experiment with a new look. And as for the 22’s comment, that was done to fill out the wheel wells which were purposely flared out to give a more macho look. So sorry to kind of justify everything, but I felt that the ‘basterdization’ (as you call it) was unnecessary. And yes I do agree with some of the comments that yes some aspects of the car are very exaggerated, but that’s what SEMA is all about, whether anyone believes it or not. Our car world wasn’t created through the copying of the same crap over and over again, it is about taking risks, and to take the time to ‘bastardize’ a Sanderson/Barris desiged car was a wrong choice. Sorry you took the negative approach of this car instead of the positive, Mike.

I hate to say this, ugly or not, this might be one of the best i’ve seen so far. I mean isn’t sema all about advertisizing? Seriously, how many people are’nt going to take a second look at this booth? Caught all of your attentions didn’t it? And if it is a Barris, well thats his thing, all his creations are outlandish and cartoonish, I’d say he hit the nail right on the head with this one. . .

i expect that from a normal person not a famed customizer. and especially not at sema. the wheels are not a good choice the uselees add on carbon doesnt flow, and the interior looks like i did it in my garage with a spoon

Oh, and I’d prefer it if the carbon-fiber appliques were painted stripes instead.

The hood and the spoiler(s) are too much. I hate to say it, but I kinda like the red-with-yellow-stripes combo.

I don’t mind the red or the wheels, but the yellow and black stripes and hood scoops, everything added to it makes the car look busy instead of bringing out the nice lines that the factory gave it. I think with a different hood, like stock, single spoiler, and no black stripe and the car would look pretty sharp.

I am a true mopar or no car guy. This Challenger is the best that i have seen. I think all the bad comments come from the same person that is a mustang freak or a camaro lover.

This is, well I’m not sure what it is! First off what is the point to the rise in the middle, and the color scheme is one straight from Ronald himself. -Justin
