SEMA Top Ten Trends: Vinyl Wraps

By Katherine Helmetag

AKA atomicalex

I guess paint really is over. Not one, but five different companies were exhibiting large-scale vinyl graphics intended for "wrapping" cars. Check out the job being done to this Ferrari—woodgrain red vinyl. Yuck. A wrapped Scooby and Mini getting the treatment are after the jump.

the crazy part about it is, in the time it’ll probably take them to get that wrap on perfect someone could’ve painted a whole car, but i guess at some point it’ll be good for something

It’s a good idea if you plan on selling the car after a while, but still wanna custom paint it because of the fact that it may cost the same to paint it as it does to wrap it, but you have to pay the painters twice when you want to go back to the original color if you don’t get a wrap.

With working in the Auto-Body Industry, I have noticed more and more cars sporting the vinyl wraps. I think that they are great, Helps resale value of car when your done. Tons of companies use it for large trucks so when they go to sell it, its not bright yellow, but white. I dont think painting cars will go away any time soon because of the cost of a vinyl wrap is the same as a “custom” paint job. Until manufacturers start using it on production, painting still has a life for a long time.

I’m wrapping mine in foil. Keeps it fresh and costs about 20 bucks. Burns out troopers’ radar, too!

Seems like a smart thing to do to me.

A worthy investment for a custom color as well.

i’m in!! I require a substantial fleet of exotics and customs for promo purposes for my business, painting gawdy graphics on Lambo’s and Bugatti’s is heart breaking. They don’t belong there for the long haul. I like that when the ride is done with it’s job we peel the stuff off and it’s good to go back on the market or into the collection!!

I love the idea – between the fact that you can change the look of your car to something totally custom for about the same price as a good paint job and the fact that at the end of the day, it actually protects your original paint, it’s a win-win situation!
