Hyundai Genesis Coupe Crashed in Korea

By John Coyle

Editor

The Genesis Coupe hasn’t reached the States yet, but one of Hyundai’s RWD sports cars has already died on its native soil. Apparently, it rounded a corner and then proceeded to slam into a concrete post. The results, as you can see, weren’t pretty, and the driver and passenger were critically injured. A Korean source has reported that the car was sporting "temporary tags" and given the fact that the airbags didn’t deploy, our buddies at Jalopnik have speculated that it was actually wearing manufacturer plates, and that this isn’t a consumer car, but rather a Hyundai tester. Makes sense to me. More pics of the carnage after the jump.

I’m really not worried about this.. In the U.S., this car’s airbags will operate as they should. In regards to safety, we’re a lot less forgiving here than elsewhere.. For example, you don’t see polls sitting in the road without a fence or a curb around it.. Things are just different there… We’re having this discussion here: http://genesisowners.com/hyundai-genesis-forum/showthread.php?t=925&highlight=accident

Check it out and leave your input…

I don’t think you guys know what you’re talking about.
The airbag not deploying is a big problem, however, the wrecked car actually looks very GOOD. It was a high speed offset collision. I see almost no buckling in the roof structure, the A-pillar appears completely intact. There is some foot-well intrusion, but not much. Overall, the safety cage held up surprisingly well for such a high speed impact. The crumple zones appear to have worked perfectly and did their intended job. Aside from the airbag not deploying, the structure of the car itself looks very safe.

Either the driver was going really fast, or the car is really poorly built. I guess those are two explanations for the amount of damage.

Never mind the car I hope the passengers make a full recovery

Every country has its own safety regulations, because the U.S. has to many drunk driving and shit heads on the road, the government, by law, says the car needs to be the safest it can be. (the crash itself)~Its more like two fucking idiots conversing too much and didn’t know how to drive at all. Accidents happen, but when your “testing” a car (trust me, many test car drivers have a little too much fun with the cars) you should keep your head out of your ass and pay attention a little, not to mention its a rear wheel drive car that has a shit load of power (V8) and if I remember correctly there aren’t very many civilian v8 cars in Korea except for trucks.

When did they start using actual people?

In Korea they don’t crash test their cars in a secure facility. They like to use a more “real life” test scenario for their cars. LOL

Air bags are not 100% garanteed to deploy, just some small print to save car manufacturer’s asses. LOL

Nov 15, 2008 at 1:30 pm

in korea cars are not required to have air bags but are put in for cars exported to the usa, im not sure if cars exported to the usa have airbags but i would assume but 100% positive bout cars in korea not required to ave air bags crazy aint it

Flav

No airbag deployment, and it seems the brake pedal moved a good distance, or the seat is all the way forward to compensate for their stature. What a piece of junk; nice wheels though.

lmfao, nice steering wheel… only for the jdm world i guess

Anonymous
Nov 15, 2008 at 3:24 am

my only concern is if i were i in the car at the time of the crash is why in the hell did the airbags not deploy??? Think about that one Hyundai.

Anonymous
Nov 15, 2008 at 3:00 am

well if it really is just a test mule then it still has kinks, all cars go through these stages. Im sure that Hyundai’s learned from this experiance, and they hopefully improve upon this and learn from it

Speaking from 7 years experience dismantling late model wrecks in a scrapyard, I don’t think it has anything to do with the car being a manufacturer unit that the bags didn’t deploy. I’ve seen worse carnage than this with no airbag deployment, and on the other end of the spectrum we’d get in cars that just bumped a deer doning minimal front end damage, yet both bags would go off and take out the windshield! And yes, steering wheels are supposed to bend, this guy must have seen it coming and held on for dear life. Good wreck anyways!

Nov 14, 2008 at 7:24 am

LOL the airbags are designed to last 100,000 miles… no matter how many accidents.

why does everyone care about this stupid car?

SouthernGuy8503
Nov 14, 2008 at 4:13 am

well from the looks of it, it looks like the people in it wasn’t hurt to bad because it don’t look bad inside the car, and to Steve, i think steering wheels are supposed to bend like that in an impact so the wheel doesn’t do as much damage to the driver by giving way,

Like they said on Jalopnik: airbags didn’t deploy, so it must be a test mule.

Steve

Are steering wheels supposed to bend like that?

kap0w
Nov 13, 2008 at 9:27 pm

I think they were actually trying to import that one to the US – you gotta be going pretty fast to reach escape velocity and get it all the way over the ocean. Too bad things didn’t turn out well.

GTwildfire
Nov 13, 2008 at 9:10 pm

looks like the driver didn’t have a foot on the brake at the time of impact either.

It’s the way of things. Day one of new models’ release, the destruction begins.
