Underglow or No?

By Rob Einaudi

What do you think of underglow? Is it played out? Was it ever cool? Would you put it on your car? Jen wants to get brown underglow for her Eagle.

i own a dodge stratus with neon, but i agree with half of the people here, i only turn it on at appropriate times, and im about to buy a viper full body kit to make the car look a little more square.
but the underglow is red, and the car is red, so it just accents it, it doesnt look like the one at the top.
plus, every body upgrade i do i do an engine upgrade, i got underglow, i got an AEM cool air racing intake, when i get my body kit, im going to put a turbo on. neon is gay if it doesnt match or looks bad, especially if you have nothing to back it up.

It’s your car & it’s your money. If that’s what you want, then you should get it. Forget what everyone else thinks…….DO YOU!!!!

I agree with some of the guys, underglow in a stock car looks horrible; first it needs to have a nice body kit, rims, paint, and some work under the hood.

with the right application i think it works. but joe blow doesnt need red neon glow to accent his maroon 87 buick skylark.

Granted on this car it looks good, the lights but not this car. I had a grand am gt black with red underglow thanks to my girlfriend, but my car looked awsome. I had a stock body with crome inserts in the grill everybody loved my car, and wanted to race. Thats where i have the problem with underglow if it is stock and slow as shit, your a tard. i raced every punk that had underglows and blew the doors of of them. Story short if you put underglow on be able to back them up.

Underglow on a stocker is just lamo… Try investing under the hood a bit before you think about eye candy. I know it’s a daily driver in all, so mods don’t have to be exotic, but at least let the car breathe a little better.

Neon looks good on show cars IMO, like a few others have said before. On a daily driver, it looks completely ridiculous.

Looks stupid on cars but i saw a 1 ton Dodge mega cab with it and it looked pretty cool…overall i wouldn’t use it

underglow has been played out since 1998. on this car it’s especially egregious.

I think it depends on the color combo, the green doesn’t match the burgundy on this car. If I were to ever get underglow, i’d only show it off at car shows..a tad bit too ricey to show off elsewhere.

I agree with SpeedCanHurt. If the underglows are done tastefully on a car it’s meant for, it looks great. Same goes for the people that put them in the interiors. Slapping some AutoZone neons on a ‘57 Bel Air, for example, is just a mortal sin.

It depends completely on how it’s done.

The idea is that they catch attention: if you turn your head and see a boring or distasteful looking car, it just looks silly. On the other hand, if the car is attractive: it can give a completely different image.

Don’t be a lemming and ask the opinion of a bunch of people that have no obvious opinion of their own, just do what you want and like…It is your car!

if your not careful they can probably be the most riciest mod,but then again it could look beautiful on some cars. but for the most it it preety stupid.

i only like them on the sides
and they only look good with some styles and some cars.

I think they look cool on a car with a nice low stance. I think the shape of the body of the car plays into account too, like they seem to look better one boxier cars to me. Other people may disagree. That said, I would still rather spend the money making my car faster.

An eggplant colored car with green underglow? Worst combo ever.
Looks like someone puked under it.

depends on what car it is. it can only be a tuner

The good thing about underglow is that when it’s a good time to turn it on, go ahead and show off, otherwise keep it off.

If they’re done right – with a suitable ride – they’re okay.

Not a big fan of underglow, but that doesn’t mean having some lighting down there is all bad. Someone was selling a really clean looking puddle light setup for the tC. It only came on with the dome light and looked classy. I think I didn’t buy it because the install was a bit intrusive (holes in the firewall, etc.) and it looked *too* classy for my tC.

It depends on the car to me. Personally i would never put it on a vehicle of mine, truck or car. One of my friends had red tubes under his red cougar and it looked pretty clean. Another of my friends has a midnight blue civic with blue LEDs and it looks good. And my cousin used to have the 10 color LED tubes with different lighting patterns and cycled through the colors on his 9 inch lifted yota on 35’s and for some reason everybody loved it, including me. At the same time i see cars everyday with underglow that look like shit, so i guess it depends on whether it’s done tastefully or not.

I personally am not into neaons…but must admit, every now and then I see a car that has them that looks pretty cool.

I agree it must be done in a color that works for the car and not excessive. The lights above the wheels on the car above is too much.

I’ve been thinking about adding underglow to Grumpy, but it’s mostly so my spotter can see the rocks and stuff when I go off-roading in the dark.

Underglow was played out in 1989, and it still is.

Most of them, like the ones on that stratus, are gay. The ones they put on the rigs on CMT’s Trick My Truck are usually nice looking though. Some cars do look good with them on, but most don’t.

personally, I think that the whole neon thing is played out, along with the whole “tuner-boy rice” scene. however, on that eagle (which should be named the “desert eagle”) it would be so out of place that it would make it completely bad ass. I say go for it.

BTW, by “tuner-boy rice”, I’m talking about the huge winged, body kitted (matching or not), huge wheeled, stickered-up, glare-mobile that makes more noise than power.

Before the bashing begins, let me just say: Different strokes, I know, but I have upmost respect for imports that are set up right. I’m not hating on the whole scene.

I wouldn’t. It’s not exactly worth the money, and when all the kids say “WOOOOW COOOOOOOOOOL!” looking at your car, all of the adults think “oh gosh..” I would just stay safe and spend money on something else. I agree with SpeedCanHunt about matching colors. If you do it, don’t just get the color that sticks out the most. It will look silly unless you do it absolutely right.

SpeedCanHurt

If you do it well, underglows can work out really beautifully on some cars. For the most part though, underglows are used by colour-blind ricers who couldn’t match colours to save their life. No offense, I personally can’t match colours either. That’s why I don’t have underglows.

Basically, if you know what colours work together, you’re laughing. Otherwise, everyone else is laughing.
