Dune Buggy Done Right
By Dan Strohl
Hemmings Motor News
Here in the wooly Northeast, even in the summertime, it’s not often one spies a dune buggy, far from its ancestral home of sun, sand and surf. But the last couple years, I’ve spotted this blue buggy with all the right touches here and there, and it makes me feel funny inside, like there’s something missing from my life—like a topless, doorless fiberglass bucket wrapped around my hide with just a single-hoop rollbar over my head would fill that hole.
Most recently, I spotted it at our Musclepalooza VIII at Lebanon Valley Dragway at the end of August, a bright sunny day that showed off the bass boat worthy metalflake in the paint. Again, though, I couldn’t find the owner around anywhere, so I couldn’t tap him for information about it, so I’ve yet to suss out what company built the tub (I’m pretty sure it’s not a Meyers Manx) and what VW engine he’s got pushing the thing.
Still, I can’t help but appreciate the polished mags, the square-shouldered bias-plies and the Miller beer tap handle atop the shifter.

That’s a Bush Buggy, it was made by a company in California named Virgil’s. I have one I’m working on right now. It has a short VW pan under it. I’m trying to have mine ready by the end of summer.

I think its funny looking, but in a good way. I am not a fan of buggies but i would be more than happy to go play on the dunes with that buggy if it had some big paddle tires on it!

“the polished mags, the square-shouldered bias-plies and the Miller beer tap handle atop the shifter”, sounds interesting.

Too bad he used a crappy cheapo center console. If he lets me ride it, I would be willing to build him a custom console

How much for the Chevy in the background?…lol. Dune Buggy’s are a blast, I wish I had one. I rented one for a day years ago in Cozumel, we had a wild time with that thing…..until it started raining out!
