Ford Flex vs. Honda Pilot: Which Would You Choose?

By Rob

Editor-in-Chief

Want a spacious, AWD family hauler and have a bit over $30k to spend? Well, here are two great options. Which would you choose?

Ford Flex Honda Pilot

Being a Ford lover, I would choose the Flex, however, I think both are quite ugly. We drive a Freestyle, which we love. My next car is the 2010 Taurus…wow, what a great looking car!

I think the honda pilot is a better car. safety wise it beats the ford. In performance honda all the way they make one of the worlds best cars. and even look wise its a better car the ford looks like an old hurts car.

I would take the Flex every time, as for less money you get a lot more than the pilot. I have a Ford Edge and the build quality is amazing. Also, with the Flex you get sync, DVD, 262 BHP and a 3.5 litre V6. Add in the vista roof and mini fridge and the Flex is one of the greatest all-round SUVS ever.

Flex, ‘cuz it’s so quiet and smooth. Refined is the word. Also it rides lower and has more family friendly stuff for the money. Its based on a Volvo is what I hear, and its safety ratings can’t be beat. I like Honda’s reputation but according to Consumer Reports, Ford’s quality issues are a problem of the past. For my family of 4 this is my next vehicle.

The ford for sure. We need some more wagons and this one has some potential. The honda is a ricer anyway. I hate ricers.

I saw a black Flex in Seattle over summer and I must admit it is very good looking. The honda pilot is just ugly, Ford Flex is my choice. Hands down

The Flex is the ugliest thing Ford has done since the Fox Body… Honda for sure on this one.

Well if ur blind u can pick honda but if u can see well u will notice that ford is way better from every corner, if u like honda then i think ur just hating ford and prob ur a jap and hatez everything from america and wish u can take down america imports used to be good cars back in the 80s but now there crap there are few nice cars but thats it, and theres the americas that wanabe japs with jap letters on there cars they dont even know what the hell it says, alot of americans dont have any pride they dont care for there own country, theres nothing better then american cars, but i still respect jap cars, but still aint buying them

Seeing as we have owned a Honda Pilot for 3 years now, I would take a Pilot. The vehicles are almost the same in every category other than import/domestic, and vehicle styling. Looking at it from a financial stand point, HONDA is one of the resale leaders in the automotive industry. Anyone who bought the Ford, would be throwing money away.

Anonymous
Nov 30, 2008 at 10:40 pm

ill take the flex. please give up the steriotype that you heard that imports are better than domestics. american cars have come so far over the last few years and many are just as good if not better quality than their import competition. nissan is my favorite car company but, unless you work on newer model cars… who are you to say that a honda is more reliable than a ford.

OddaballStang
Nov 30, 2008 at 6:35 pm

Flex!!! Stlying aside,(which Flex wins hands down,) you have to go with the Ford. Reliability is a non issue, because it is not the 1970s anymore, Japanese, and European cars are no more reliable than American cars. The American auto industry learned from its mistakes then, and Japanese cars were not great in the 1970s either. The Flex gives you 262HP from a 3.5L V6, while Honda does 250HP, from the same size, With Sync, Rear seat fridge, and DVD family entertainment system the Flex come in at $37,148, while the Pilot, with bluetooth and DVD cost you $40,665, hmm, I guess less really is more, huh Honda?

Buck Masterson
Nov 30, 2008 at 5:14 pm

Being anti Honda I would not go for the Pilot. However even though the Flex is pleasant on the eye, I am still upset that Ford gave up their Minivan Windstar/Freestar for this. The first time I saw the Flex I thought it was a custom older Chevy Suburban. On a scale of 1-10 the pilot gets a 1 and the Flex gets a 3.5. American car companies need to stop with these gimmick vehicles and stick to what the consumer wants. Reliable transportation. Honestly do car companies drug test employees?? Starting with the Pontiac Aztec, the P.T. Cruiser, and the Chevy HHR you think Ford would have learned what ugly is. But I guess if you can’t beat them, join them.

Nov 30, 2008 at 5:09 pm

I’ve been in the pilot, nothing special at all, kinda boring, actually it is boring. I’m a tech at a ford dealership and has actually driven the flex and was amazed by it’s performance, the power was great, good pick up, handling was awesome, such a quiet ride, the looks are retro. This is a ride I totally would get If I start thinkin about having kids, oh and the refrigerator comes in handy, and the sun roofs are so cool, and if you get the sync you have so much entertainment. I love this car!!!!

Nov 29, 2008 at 7:02 pm

for looks… the Flex

Sunny
Nov 29, 2008 at 6:56 pm

I think that comparing those 2 pictures SPECIFICLY would be wrong because the Pilot shown in the picture is a basic trim one, thats why there is a plastic bumper/black door handles/side mirrors. But the flex shown in that picture is not a basic trim thats why it looks more attractive.

keeping all that in mind, i would definetly go for the pilot.

Zoom
Nov 29, 2008 at 4:22 pm

Sorry, I made a mistake. I am so dumb. All you have to do is LOOK at the vehicles in both pictures. I obviously made a terrible observation. You can just SEE the quality of the Flex is 10Xs better. That honda pilot looks so plasticky.Hmmm, the plastic front bumper and side mirrors, or the chrome finished front bumper and side mirrors to make the car more slick looking and of better quality. Honda is so cheap and such junk.

Anonymous
Nov 29, 2008 at 2:20 pm

i’ll go for ford flex. chip in another $10k-$30k pimp it up.haha, yes, thats what we do..but when it comes to think about pimping that honda pilot, no thank you..better leave it that way..still gonna look ugly like standard..

Zoom
Nov 29, 2008 at 11:09 am

CarDomain switch yall swag up. Put up a picture of a higher trim level Pilot up. This shit is rigged to begin with. Pilot=Well Rounded. Flex=Square(not the actual size, you lames).

Zoom
Nov 29, 2008 at 11:04 am

Sure you’re European Carl, *wink*. Please the flex is blatantly bland. No design cues whatsoever. It just looks uninspiring. It seems like they looked at a 1st gen. scion xb and ding came the concept of the flex, a blown-up version of the xb with the blue oval. and plus the pictured pilot is an entry-level pilot with the black side mirrors and black protective rubber on the doors as opposed to the top of the line, show room picture of the flex these chumps here at CD put up. just look at those pictures. a picture of a real pilot and a flex drawing thats been photoshopd.

sb. ford invented cars? sthu! in the u.s.? yeah but not invented cars as is in built the first car in the world. if im not mistaken it was either germany or some other european country that invented cars. but they were steam-powered cars but it was cars, nevertheless!

carl
Nov 29, 2008 at 10:32 am

hey uum zoom i pick the ford simply cuzz it looks 100 times better than the pilot and just like every other american vehicle it has more power too!! and im not american european to be exact!!

Nov 29, 2008 at 10:31 am

honda is shit! that grille is fugly! ford invented cars!

Zoom
Nov 29, 2008 at 9:59 am

This is a no-brainer. The Pilot of course is a much better quality SUV/CUV. Its been around for quite sometime so it definitely has improved into a better automobile. The Flex is just ugly and too low. It should belong in the station wagon class. People(Americans, but not all) in here only pick Flex because its American and the least they could do is vote for it…because thats really patriotic. please.

Definately the flex, the pilot looks like a big xtrail – but uglier

Abo Hazzear
Nov 28, 2008 at 6:40 pm

The Flex looks like shit in person, just another stupid mini box van. So go ahead and put $1000’s into ‘customizing’ (aka – filling with speakers and adding rims the engine can barely turn) and then watch how much debt you put yourself into for a vehicle that can’t even last the amount of time it will take you to pay off at least 3 of the rims!

Ford Flex!!

Rich
Nov 27, 2008 at 11:43 pm

I think the Flex looks way better than the Honda, the front end on the Honda just looks wrong. But in any case there both boxy and have horrible Aerodynamic Efficiency. But still the flex looks alot more unique and likeable compared to the Pilot, Older Pilots looked alot better than the new ones. But still nothing beats a Honda when it comes to reliability

I agree with Hellmuth. The guy below me can shut his mouth.

That Ford flex looks so much better quality than that fugly Honda. Look at the wheels on both. And like Hellmuth says, it has a very nice sense of style. It is unique, even if it does look somewhat like the xB, it looks like a hella better version of the xB. The Honda looks like every other jap SUV on the road.

Anonymous
Nov 27, 2008 at 9:32 pm

hellmuth your an idiot the new civic looks NOTHING like the tc and just because they made the element boxy doesnt mean they stole it from scion. cuz if thats the case then every american company in the 60s and 70s took the styles of muscle cars from each other because they all have the same body styles. Oh and last time I checked Honda isnt the one that needs to be bailed out becuase they cant handle the economy becuase they cant build cars people want. now take your flex and shove it up your ass HELLMUTH

Hellmuth
Nov 27, 2008 at 8:45 pm

The Ford Flex has higher ratings in all fields, it actually carries a sense of style as opposed to the Honda, and it is far better in quality when compared to a Honda.
All these people saying the Flex looks like the xB too much and that Ford can’t create their own sense of styling need to watch their words. Honda created the toaster-boxed Element shortly after the Scion’s success, then later restyled their Civic to resemble the Scion tC. So not only does Honda copied working designs but their originals have no flair either where as Ford can actually create a vehicle from scratch without just looking at a checklist of what makes and SUV and SUV.
Besides the fact that the Flex looks good on the outside the cabin is amazing. Ford really came through with the proper styling ques and appropriate technology. There are many options to choose from along with a large amount of amenities already standard for the vehicle.
The Pilot is simply another carry-over from last seasons productions with nothing to show in change other than that hideous front fascia.

Glen
Nov 27, 2008 at 6:58 pm

I too hate Ford. In this case I would pick the Flex if it was a looks based purchase. It is a sick lookin’ ride and that’s the only thing going for it when you are comparing it to anything Japanese built.

Katakuna

Obviously I voted Flex earlier but it’s funny how people pawn the Flex off as looking like the Scion xB, but remember the Honda Element, boxy or squarish styling doesn’t belong to just one company, that’s like saying the design of a pickup truck belongs to Ford or the common minivan design belongs to Dodge.

Derrick

Oh, and I guess it’s obvious my vote goes to the Honda on this one. :)

retroman
Nov 27, 2008 at 4:59 pm

definitely the flex. ford’s styling is much better. honda doesn’t make cars anymore, they make boring transportation. plus i could see a bunch of mullet wearing ’80s loving punk rockers getting out of the flex quicker than i could the pilot. the flex is the car you wish you had in ‘85.

Derrick
Nov 27, 2008 at 4:59 pm

C’mon… look at the stupid flex. The grill, headlights, shape… it’s nothing more than a slightly larger version of the first gen Scion XB. I love the XB, and apparently so does some design team at ford. They just took a design that was selling well for Toyota and copied it and made it a little bigger and probably more powerful. And they wonder why the American auto manufacturers are going broke. Maybe if one of them would come up with their own ideas for a change they might sell something.

Anonymous
Nov 27, 2008 at 4:31 pm

The Ford Flex even LOOKS better quality. Look at that plasticky Honda. I don’t even really like the looks of the Ford Flex that much, but it does look different. The Honda Pilot, the Toyota 4Runner, they are all the same. I pick the Ford Flex.

Robin
Nov 27, 2008 at 5:39 am

I’d have to say Flex, more room and has a greter potential for aftermarket parts. I saw one at SEMA with a procharger s/c and all acrylic air intake hosing from the s/c to the intercooler to the t/b and green engine bay lighting. Personally they are both ugly, the Flex looks like a beefed-up station wagon and the Pilot looks more like every other mid-sized SUV on the planet without attitude, but with some aftermarket here and aftermarket there the Flex can be made into one of the ultimate head-turners of the road.

This is a no-brainer. The Flex hands down. Just look at the styling. The Flex is modern, contempory and stands out like a sore thumb. The Honda on the other hand would look modern..if this was 1998! Aged front styling, out-dated body cladding equiped with a terrible stance makes the Flex an easy choice.

Flex.

It actually has a style at all, rather than being Generic SUV, and the Flex style manages to actually look pretty good. It’ll handle better and deal with New England inclement weather about as well.

Course if I actually had 30K to spend I’d spend it having the drivetrain in my xB gone over and upgraded, then use the rest on a combination of a massive garage update and some serious tool purchases. With the money left over I’d dump into my ‘62 Comet.

I own 2006 Honda Pilot and its the best large vehicle I’ve ever had. It loves to be revved, goes like stink, is very well made and reliable. But reliability is so tedious and just look at that Flex!

I’d have the flex.
