GM’s Worst?
By Rob Einaudi
Editor-in-Chief
Everyone loves top ten lists. With GM set to go back to Congress, here’s Popular Mechanic’s list of GM’s top ten biggest goofs since 1970. I don’t think Jen would agree with the selection of the Vega. And I’m not sure I agree with the inclusion of the EV1 or the ‘91-’95 Saturns. What do you think?

you want to know whats even WORST….
your spyware tracer finding 5-10 Cardomain tracking cookies in your PC after you visit their site.
an individual tracking cookie gets downloaded after almost every part of this site you visit!
Their bad enough that my antivirus program notes them as a low-mid threat.

What the hell??? Why didn’t Aztec get NUMBER 1? Chevette? Come on you can say you own a Vette! The Hummer is just a Silverado/Sierra, why weren’t they on the list. GM never sold the EV1, but good idea! Prius can pound sand! The Caddy and Olds are still sweet, just drop in a stroked 383! I saw some turbo job saturn on youtube, wasted a tt supra! Once again Toyota sux!

I used to read PM, but NOT ANYMORE. Why would you put this crap under your name. The Chevette and Vega are great cars. The Chevette was designed to compete with the jap crap. BUY AMERICAN….
The Chevette did just that. I still own my 76 today. People need to get there heads out of there asses and drive and buy AMERICAN, keep AMERICA in AMERICA.

Popular Mechanics’ article is about the cars that damaged GM’s reputation, not the worst GM cars. Some of the cars on this list are actually very good cars – especially for their day – as many readers have pointed out. The problem is that all of these 10 cars were publicity and public opinion nightmares. For publicity damage, I vote the EV1 as worst. And for public opinion, got to be the Aztek (even though I still think it’s kind of cool).

Typical anti GM press. its’ been this way for years. If GM produced the Scion refrigerator-on-wheels, the press would have killed it within two years. I still have my X car, bought it new in ‘81. Did it have some growing problems – yes, but all models do. The X car was the start of every FWD car GM has offered, almost 30 years of production (the final A car was produced in ‘96, it’s subframe will bolt directly into an ‘80 model X car). The 3.5 engine is still a 60* v-6 block, same as the 2.8 in the ‘80 X car. As far as the Vega, it was before its’ time. Mercedes uses the same technical design today in its’ aluminum blocks, but today we have synthetics and low tension rings to make it work. As far as the EV-1, it was a good start on electrics, but the public wasn’t behind the car (yes, everyone that had one on trial wanted to buy them, but the general public could have cared less). GM was forced to take the car back after the trial period do to legal reasons (our litigation/lawyer run society). Remember back in the mid ’80’s when GM wanted to produce hybrids, and CARB told them gas or electric – not both. Now its being pushed by everyone. The Caddy 4-6-8 is another example of “before its time”. The Bendix computers were not good enough for the design. GM and Chrysler both use the idea today in the V-8 trucks – twenty years of computer improvment. Is GM blameless for the mess its in today – NO, the execs have killed the company – and will continue to do so because the’re bean counters/businessmen – not car guys.

wtf are the Chevette and Vega on there for, they clearly OWN on drag strips. very versitle cars, even if the engines weren’t that great to start, just drop a good ol’ 350 in it and its instantly beastly. i understand the Xbody cars and the saturns… beacuse a Buick is made of the parts that chevy and pontiac didn’t want, and Saturns are made of the parts that buick didn’t want. speaking of which, why isn’t the Buick Skyhawk on here. that was the worst of the worst of the worst cars that GM ever made.

I don’t know…
.
In ‘85 my wife and I bought an
‘84 Citation X-11.
.
It was a really good car.
.
Lots of space with the rear
seat down.
.
Handled great & kept up
with the Dodge & Chrysler
Turbo’s of the day.
.
Ultimately sold it to my father,
who drove it daily to work.
.
He had well over 250K when
he finally retired it.
.
No problems.
.
Just routine maintenance.
.
.
The Chevette was a good little car too.
.
.
My only gripes about the Vega were
the aluminum blocks that had to have
the cylinders sleeved with steel, and
the fact that sometimes they would
rust on the dealer lots…
.
Not good.
.
However, drop a small block in an
early model, or get a Cosworth, and
they are fun!

I disagree with the Saturn on the list. Those cars run forever and are simple to work on. I used to work for a Saturn dealership, and those S-cars when maintained will run forever. We had 3 regular customers that owned S-cars with over 350,000 on the odometer still running strong. I myself used to own a ‘95 SL2 wagon with over 150k, and if I had to, I would have kept it. All I did to it was new brakes, a muffler strap, and and oil change, and the car ran like a champ. Got nearly 40 mpg too. If there was a Saturn to put on this list, try the L series, or first generation VUE, or the early IONs. Those were rolling abortions.

GM’s problem is that they don’t promote the vehicles that are the heavy hitters and they have too much in house competition with brands overlapping each other and not having individuality and consumer target groups. Example: What’s up with Buick and Pontiac. It’s like GM is doing to them what Chrysler did to Plymouth. Also, remember the last generation Camaro? If GM had actually promoted it, it might have sold better, and they might not have been forced to terminate it. Now Chevy is trying to catch up on a market that’s been majorly capitalized by the Mustang, and if GM had also promoted the electric car in the ’90s instead of killing it, they could be light years ahead of Toyota’s Prius. Now they’re just hoping that the Volt will ease the company’s woes, but they can’t get it to market soon enough. And I don’t think that list is all bad, but they are probably looking at it from a profit standpoint.

The Saturn because everyone who drives on is incredibly slow and old or young and thinks it’s a racecar. Most unpredictable drivers ever.

I’ve had a couple mid-90s Saturn SL’s. One of them I bought for $100 and repaired (colission damage).
-
They’re actually pretty simple and can be very reliable cars. The trick to their engines’ longevity is to keep feeding them oil, which sneaks out of those engines, even if none of the gaskets leak. As long as they don’t run dry, they continue to run.
-
A friend’s went 260,000 miles on the original engine and transmission before being left for dead. Many (much better) cars meet their ends before then.

Haha, I love how each brand has their own flawed car, but Saturn’s flaw is SATURN.

I don’t get why the Saturn is on this list. Aztek should’ve been number one followed by the Chevette and Cimarron.
SATURN
Dec 2, 2008 at 7:44 pm
ok so i obviousle disagree with the 91-95 saturns on the list!
1: they are great economy cars to this day you can have 30mpg for only $2000
2: they won many awards like jd power and associates 3 years in a row
3: CLEARLY THE WORST SATURN IS THE 96-2000 SATTYS i mean they look worse than 1st gen and have same engine with more weight…
the EV1 was truely the car of the future… gm just severly mishandled it

How come the Chevrolet Chevette is considered junk, but in Europe the Vauxhall Chevette was consider a decent small car?
I vote for X-body’s as worst.

The EV-1 definitely was not a contender for a “worst of” list. Flawed logic got it into the running, although yeah I agree with part of their writeup that GM snatched failure out of the jaws of success with their handling of the EV1 program’s termination.
-
There are many things GM could have done to end the EV1 program that would have not cast them as killers of electric vehicle progress.
-
The cars were destroyed probably because they feared lawsuits or something like that but I think GM suffered more from the bad publicity. They should have let the ones in existence be sold to the public, sell off the parts stock and washed their hands.
-
aah well, it’s all water under the bridge, I mean the Volt is… maybe going to come out in ‘10 if GM’s still around and it’ll be something like 30 or 40 grand maybe more who knows… should sell like hot cakes

the chevette wasn’t bad after a 2.8v6 hack, neither the vega after many hacks, and even a cardomain user made a hero out of a citation..but real people, real world and remnants of real ripoffs is a top ten that leads to car companies crushed.. The very design we all drive today. (Citation is a good top ten worst, kinda funny to pick that one…ITS ALL OF THE TOP TEN “GOOD” TODAY).
