Say No to Crack

By David Wallens

Grassroots Motorsports

The other day I stopped off at the local machine shop with my boss, Tim. He was having some parts for his Group 44 Triumph GT6 crack tested. You know, if you’re going to race an old car, might as well make sure the parts are up to snuff. DIY crack-testing kits are also available. (And I know this isn’t a Triumph part; it’s just something to show how the process reveals booboos.)

So No To Crack

I’m contracted to crack-test train gear teeth, axles, wheelsets bogies etc, and il just say make sure that you use lint free rags, such as denim, to remove the penetrant before you spray the developer or there will be alot of false indications of cracking in the background, also, if you have access to an electromagnet, there is another method (that only works for ferrous metals aka magnetic) called “magnetic particle inspection” that is a much more sensitive method.
