MAZDA6 vs. Chevy Malibu: Which Would You Choose?

By Rob

Editor-in-Chief

This week is the battle of the Camry fighters. Ryan Douthit just reviewed the new Mazda6 and I did a real quicky review of the Malibu hybrid (Porter still owes me a longer review on the Malibu, since he actually spent some time with the car). For this showdown, let’s compare the V6 models. The Mazda’s 3.7 liter V6 puts out 272 hp, and Chevy’s 3.6 liter V6 puts out 252 hp. Both cars are only available with 6-speed automatics, and come in under $30k nicely equipped. Which would you choose?

As you can see, some people think thay know about Mazda’s. If you WOULD own one, yet only chicks have a Mazda6. I personally own a 3 and LOVE it. The new gen. of 3s and 6s coming from Mazda….. Ba – Fuken – nanna’s!!!!! Besides, who wants a Chevy now!!! Or even a Ford.. I know I know… Ford HAD stock in Mazda. Bottom line of the fact is, Domestic cars are no good. Truck and SUVs on the other hand. But for gas saving, relativly high powered small engins, gotta get it from overseas. For big HP & TQ, stay domestic with the sick retro style of American Muscle that is hittin the streets!!!!

Way to be mature about postings guys. Power isnt everything though either. It depends on how it transfers to the wheels and how the tranny is geared too as far which one is faster then the other and in what situation. Another thing that could make a difference is the cam positions but in this case they are both V6 not I6 or anything like that.

Yea, i drive a malibu and i’ve owned the shit outta a lexus is300, and i would own a mazda 6. there chick cars anyway, so i hope whoever left those comments picking the mazda 6 has a pussy.

the 6 i mean seriously look at the interior its so much nice, it doesnt give you a cheap plastic look first and those two colour that gm offer in the interior just look so shitty… it really take a redneck to appreciate!

I work for chevy. i say the new malibu is one of the best car gm has built. I can say that its pretty fast compared to the older malibus. but i would definately chose the chevy malibu. ive driven a mazda6 and well it takes a while to respond and the malibu has a real kick in it at start up.

I would take the 6. I have driven the new malibu and it has no power. This is the best malibu chevy has built and it still doesn’t add up to the Mazda. No perks no buy.

i would have to take the mazda6 is just looks way better. i have never like chevy anyway. i have owned all GM vehicles and have had nothing but problems with them. everyone i know that owns a mazda or ford love their cars and they last a long time.

Tim
Dec 11, 2008 at 8:53 pm

The Mazda 6 hands down. I am a GM person but for the money the Mazda gives you more perks for the dollar. The Mazda has a tiny bit more room and MORE power! The Malibu is a great car I just find the Mazda 6 edges it out a bit with more power and conveniences for my hard earned money.

rob
Dec 11, 2008 at 8:39 pm

actually Mazda is its own entity now ford no longer owns them and yes every car maker shares parts and vehicles the colorado is the same as the iszuzu truck so by the way things look i would take the 6 270hp all leather interior and a much superior ride

i would have to go with the chevy b/c i have a 1993 chevy truck with the orignal motor with 195,000 miles on it and the only problem i have had with it was the fuel pump just b/c it sat for a while then drove it like hell but chevy all the way no doubt bout that

Both are extremely nicer than their predecessors, but if it came down to it, the Malibu.

mazda 6 hands down.
nothing against chevy.
but my mom test drove a malibu a few weeks ago at a local chevy dealer and for the price the mazda 6 is an all around nicer vehicle.
i also own a 2003 mazda 6 with 72,000 miles on it. not a single problem yet.

I don’t think Toyota had any part in the Cavalier and I think the Malibu is an all American car as well. But I do know the Chevy Prism is a Toyota with Chevy badges, the Pontiac Vibe has a Toyota engine, but I’m not sure what else is. I’m pretty sure the Malibu is an all GM thing though. And I’m not sure if any Mazda cars are Fords (even though they are owned by Ford), but I do know their “truck” is a rebadged Ranger.

Hey
“anton malherbe” Guess what??? MAZDA is made by FORD you idiot!

Brayden Sauve
Dec 11, 2008 at 5:03 pm

Well if this was a short term thing i would definatly pick the mazda, but if this was for more than 2 years, hands down i would pick the chevy. i find that mazda motors do not last as long as chevy or dodge etc, even when they are properly maintained. i may be wrong but i could probably get atleast half a million k’s out of the chevy, but i think would not even get 350 000k’s out of the mazda. both nice cars.

Jonathan W Knoke
Dec 11, 2008 at 4:53 pm

This is funny really because Mazda is owned by Ford and allot of Chevy models are joint ventures with Toyota such as the Caviler…

Cense I drive a Toyota I’ll take the Malibu.

Canyon
Dec 11, 2008 at 4:19 pm

Why Didi you even ask this? The Mazda 6 wins hands down. Its a much better platform with the V6 or in MAZDASPEED trim. Do they even make a “performance” malibu?

I would choose Malibu. I’m sure other people have a different opinion about this but here’s why, Mazda’s genrally (from what i’ve seen) have a crappy transmission that usually goes out around the 100k mark – and its been that way for years and years and years .. ect.

Franxou
Dec 11, 2008 at 3:05 pm

I would go with the mazda6. I too think that the malibu is an old people car (maybe they should have changed the name because of the two last malibus that left a bad impression) and the mazda’s look is so dang nice, but it’s sad that since this 6 is designed in california they probably won’t bring the 5-door back :(
Still go with a mazda6

anton malherbe
Dec 11, 2008 at 2:52 pm

Mazda!!…better looking AND MORE POWERFUL!!..i`m not American,so i don`t have to choose an American car anyway!

Jeff
Dec 11, 2008 at 2:50 pm

Based on looks only I would go with the Malibu. I like the in your face looks of it and the rear end looks nice too. The Mazda looks too much like the Mitsubishi sedans. The only Mitsu’s I’m a fan of are the Eclipse and Evo.

Mazda, all the way. Mazda is a branch of Ford, and a very active branch. I owe mazda for making my Ranger possible.

Dec 11, 2008 at 1:16 pm

Mazda, it’s the prom queen, where the malibu is the “ugly” cheerleader (still nice, but no prom queen…)

I know I should be patriotic and say Chevy, but if I buy a chevy, it’ll be a truck, and I already own one.

Did anyone else notice the Malibus on display at SEMA this year? They had pics in the CarDomain SEMA coverage photos. They were kitted, lowered, and had upgraded rims on them…..damn they looked amazing. I know that both of the lip kits they used are on sale now and considering how awesome the exterior can be made to look on the Malibu, I vote Bu all the way. Though I would like to try a Mazda some day.

its funny that there is this comparison because these are the two cars im looking at right now to replace my g6. i like the mazda styling better, but i drove the malibu and it drove very nice. still don’t understand why it needs the paddle shifting.

I work at a bodyshop for a Chevy/Cadillac dealership, and you have no idea how many Chevs (and caddy’s for that matter) come back for rust warranty. It’s disgusting. We use an 08′ Malibu LTZ as one of our shuttle vehicles and I must say it’s a huge step up from the old generation Malibu’s (which also were notorious for rust), but somehow this isn’t a very comfortable, powerful (doesn’t feel like 252hp), and unless fully equipped with LTZ package, let’s be honest. It’s not a very pretty car to look at.

I am so glad that Ford is not even close to #1… as well as GM which should rot in almighty hell… it hit 1980 and all of a sudden every new USDM car went to hell…

Malibu hands down. I have driven every version except the hybrid. The top of the line LTZ with the V6 and the 6 speed pattle shift is AMAZING. The 3.5 will get you anywhere quickly and the tranny shifts amazingly with the paddels. The interior is great. The leather and sude seats are the best. I havent driven the Mazda 6, but I have seen and been in it, and I definately prefer the Malibu over it.

the winner is probably going to be the Mazda. i for one hated the Malibu but i had one as a rental and it was fantastic i loved the new styling and the interior design was great the only downfall was horrible blind spots and the seats were very hard. since i have never driven the Mazda my vote is the Chevrolet Malibu

Justin of IRM
Dec 10, 2008 at 8:57 pm

I’d have to go with the Mazda. I think the Chevy Malibu makers have took large steps in making their car’s design look better than before which made this decision a bit tougher. 272 HP, not too shabby.
