Mustang Cobra and Viper V10: Marriage Made in Heaven?
By Mike Musto
AKA Mr. Angry
Every now and then a project comes along that makes you raise an eyebrow. This is one of those projects. I was reading some of the posts on The Turbo Forums and came across this wicked 1995 Mustang with a (dare I say it) Viper V10 by Cobra Scott. Talk about thinking outside the box! This guy not only had a crazy vision but the steel gonads to see it through. Seriously, do you have any idea the heat he’s going to take from the Mustang crowd? He made his own K-frame, motor mounts and control arms, and to top it off he’s going to mount twin ball bearing T-76 Turbo’s to it. WOOF! Ladies and gentlemen this IS hot rodding! Way to go Scott!

im a diehard mustang lover through and through have been since i was born and i love that you wanna put a viper motor in your car man i cant wait ta see what it does keep up the good work and fuck ignorant people

You have to hate the haters. These so called car “purists” make me sick. If a guy owns a car he has every right to do what he wants to it. And no car manufacture is perfect. They all have thier strengths and weakness’ So If someone wants to make a frankenstien rig more power to ‘em. For example I don’t care if you take a cherry 1968 Dodge Charger (my favorite car by the way) gut the thing and stick a Duramax desiel in it. As long as it rips, snorts and burns its way to a really great adrenaline high and you had a great time building it. (which sound pretty bad ass come to think of it) Then you deserve all of the kudos in the world for putting all of that time, effort and money into a one of a kind rig. This Snake-Horse love child is going to be one of the sickist rides on the street. Great job man and make sure to make those haters put thier money where thier mouth is.
Good luck
Kyle
P.S. I’ll race you. I would gladly get my ass handed to me to see that thing in action.

Good job on this ride. For all the people who dont get it and left negative comments, you can not argue that all the hard work, money and craftmanship that is going into this ride is awesome and really what this site is all about. This man is a true motorhead and I am envious of his ride/free time/spare cash even though mustangs and vipers do nothing for me.
Even if it blew up in 4 months, he can say he did it and had fun. Who wouldnt want the spare time and coin to do something like this.

Hey there guys this is my car and my build…I’m not even going to take the time to address some of the highly uneducated comments I have read here. I will just say this. Some guys get doing a build like this and some don’t. If you like it thanks for the support and make sure you keep posted the car should be wrapped up by February. If you don’t like the car I’ll still sleep at night.
About the only thing that annoys me is people thinking this will be an under performing turd of a ride. Let me get some facts straight. The engine weighs only 45 pounds more then the cast iron 351W found in the 95 Cobra R’s. However it sits back further and 3 inches lower then that setup giving me a much greater center of gravity. The car is FAR more rigid then a stock chassis in every way. Check the build link on ViperAlley to see pics of the cage. The car is built right and will make over 1000 rwhp all said and done.
Anybody that would like to challenge these statements feel free to register over on Viper Alley and comment in the build thread. For those that would like to see the car in action I will be attending event all over the country in 2009. Everything from road race events, to drag events, to top speed challenges. I welcome you to bring whatever you have in the garage and show me what a “real” car can do.
here is the original build thread

The reason they don’t use the Viper engines in drag cars is because there’s more moving parts to break, and the V8s have been in use for years. Most teams have their programs built around the V8s already. And as far as the Viper not being able to turn, why does it keep kicking ass in the GT series, without modification

to eveyone here its not the size of the motor that counts, its how u use it, v10 v8 v6 all can acheive 1000horsepower, the viper is a friggen v10 and dats all the horsepower they got from it?? u give a jap or a german a v10 and see what they do to it , american cars suck every which way, except the vette..

shaun your an idiot. go away. you just compared a turboed v10 to a v8…not very fair are we? why not go with some more comparable like oh iunno dodges hemi 6.1L vs the vette 6.0L one has 425hp the other 505hp. a turboed v10 vs lets say a supercharged v8 wouldnt get its ass stomped because of lag and no torque. so id rather a S/C 383 stroker or even a 572 CHEVROLET engine then some pathetic V-10 that needs so much bolt-ons to even be compared to a V8…like you said turbocharged v10 vs a chevy V8.

This is insane. awesome! wow that thing is going to have some serious HP. Terrific. I love to see things such as this done. And oh, kbevere. To answer your quesiton, “why not just buy a viper and save all that work” why not just buy a str-4 neon and not turbo something else. haha… some guys arnt affraid to get their hands dirty, and then again…. your OEM viper doesnt have Twin ball Bearings Ts!!!!!! For all you who think that chevy is the only company that can make a good engine your and idiot. A turbocharged V-10 will blow the chevy V8’s out the water. I think its pretty cool that this guy is willing to put that much work into his mustang but I think I would have found A better year mustang to swap out. Hope the the car withstand the power of the viper big V-10 engine.

with the way the economy is going ford dodge chrysler and gm are all gonna be one company.. me personally i love mopars and i think ford motors are crappy.. but ford does make a nice stang.. so why not combine the two i think it is sick.. i would have chosen a different year stang to do it with like the new one or the notchback.. anyway people who argue back and forth on ford vs chevy vs dodge dont have anything better to do with their lives…

hey ford dodge and gm are all gonna be one company soon anyway with the way the economy is going.. but i still am a mopar fan and that is one sick ass stang… ford makes cool bodies but crappy motors.. so why not put a viper in a mustang… me personally if youre gonna do a viper in a mustang i would of done it in a new one or the 88-91 series notchbacks.. go viper

hey mike if Chevy/GM motors are so shitty an fords an dodges are better why is it every motor basicly used in a top racing syndicate use CHEVROLET MOTORS? NASCAR uses the 350ci 5.7L V8 by you guessed it CHEV top fuel dragsters use 500+ci V8s from again you named them CHEVROLET….only time you see a mustang using its pissless bitch motor is autocross and other stupid pathetic events nobody gives a shit for.

Dec 11, 2008 at 7:30 pm
yeah thats the only way you can get a mustang to go fast is to get another cars engine and put it in a mustang
Məxfi
Dec 11, 2008 at 7:23 pm
a dodge viper v10 is rather pointless with its 2.25″ pistons….yah DO THE MATH youll sit its not really the best motor for choice after all….how many top ranked dragsters are vipers? like 1 an thats the MOPAR team car, other then thay you see none. why? they break to eaisly cause the design is shit the cylinder walls are to thin an the pistons are to small….yah sure its nice to say it has 500+hp an its not supercharged an can smoke this an that blah fucking blah …get your head out of your ass already. reason why the v10 has more power per buck then a 5.4L 32v V8 is because you guessed it the viper is a V-10 its 8.4Ls….so christ stop comparing motors an just let it rest that viper motors suck even though the numbers they produce should equal to amazment.

Better from a dodge sports car than a blasphemous chevrolet/GM part! I am a hard core ford junky and this is COOL as hell. It’s different from what most would have done (example: 460+ci motor swap) and at the same time no different than what drag racers do (Ford fiber body w/Chevy monster motor or Dodge Fiber Body w/Ford Blown Motor…) It’s the same concept.
Mike
Dec 11, 2008 at 3:27 pm
Carson… What are you talking about. This motor pushes 500 hp N/A. Once he throws on that turbo he’ll be making far beyond that. If there’s a 3.0 Liter Ferrari V8 on the planet without serious modifications that can beat that, please find one and explain! Fact is, that Ford GT motor in all it’s glory makes 500 hp supercharged! This V-10 is not just a torque monster, it’ll pack some serious ponies!
Mike
Dec 11, 2008 at 3:24 pm
Dude, Angry, I don’t think this guy’s going to get as much flack as your saying he will. Although yes, he’s throwing a “mopar” motor into his Ford, it’s a VIPER! It’s not like he’s throwing in a Chevy V8 or something. It’s an iconic V10 motor with loads of torque and most importantly, it’s probably never been done before. As a mustang enthusiast, I love this build and wish this dude the best of luck!

im an import guy but i must say to go throu all that work takes time and skill. Good job congrats on ur build

Dec 11, 2008 at 1:23 pm
Size isint the most important thing. I recall a car made in the 1920’s with a V-16 engine that made only 200 hp. Sure, the torque was unimaginable, but till. All engine size determines is torque. And, well… how far you can push it. Im not hating on the Dodge Viper, but to me its all hype. There are 3.0 V-8s in Ferrari F-40’s that could smoke this thing. Why not go all out and get a Ford GT? 5.4 liter that makes about 500- 750 horsepower, and costs about as much as a loaded bently.
Steve
Dec 11, 2008 at 1:12 pm
Regarding the 2JZ/S2000. If it’s been done, the transmission would have had to have been moved back quite a bit, as well as the dash. But I suppose it could have been done, if the driver didn’t mind sitting in a cramped space. And S2000 front isn’t ALL that big, and the F22C barely fits in there with room to spare. Like I said at first, I bet it couldn’t be done… But I change the rest of my statement… I bet it couldn’t be done WITHOUT alot of manipulation of metal.

To Steve, Have you even noticed how long a S2000 nose is? It is infact quite possible to fit a 2jz in there, and it has been done before. As for how much this throws of the weight of the near perfect 50/50 S2000, I don’t know. Cool swap if you want to go fast in a straigt line though…

Dec 11, 2008 at 4:40 am
What a waste, Ford does make a V10, it’s a 3V 6.8L engine that makes 362 hp and 457lbs of torque. There was a modified version fitted into a Mustang that opperated off of the older 2V SOHC 6.8L engine that ran off of a modified M-112 supercharger that made a ton of hp, but I don’t remember the specs.
In short, Fords V8s are too large and cumbersome to compare to the smaller displacement, higher reving V10s from Europe.

wait. does this mean i can’t have a Kicker amp with my JBL subs??
what about a Nova sub-frame on a ford pick-up truck??
if ford were to make a engine equally to the V10 viper engine im pretty sure the guy would drop it in.
the car is going to be bad ass period.
it takes a real craftsman to build such a monster and all the people talking crap probably can’t even install there own wiper blades.

Nothing is wrong with the RB26DETT. I work with them EVERY DAY, and in my opinion, it is the best engine ever made, bar none.
I’m merely stating, it’s good this guy didn’t go the FAT F Tokyo Drift route, and drop an RB26DETT inside the bay.
