Bosozoku is not the name of the trend. its the name of the group of outlaws(but not as violent as the Yakuza) that do these things with cars. They are NOT people who would want to mess with. And I lived in Japan for 10 years so I know what I am talking about.

Toyota’s are still affectionately known as Toyopets in Japan, however the word is pronounced among the Bosozoku groups as “Toyipee”. If you have ever been to Japan, you would know this. You would also know, that this is more or less a NEWER trend, and it will not die off anytime soon. It has nothing to do with tuning, and everything to do with outrageousness and appearance. In fact, most cars are family owned and worked on, and it’s more or less a project for the whole family to join in on. Usually, the owners of these cars also have a nicer less modified car in their stable as well. These cars are not owned by poor people.

Also, before Toyota became a household name, a small yet lucrative company from Japan set up shops in America and Southern Japan under the Toyopet franchise. These cars were from 1953 onwards.
